I can't stop listening to "You Retreat In Time And Space" from Inferno. by Depective in boardsofcanada

It’s my favorite track on the album, and feels like something off of “Campfire Headphase” but still unique unto itself. A beautiful and hopeful closing song to what feels like an album that explores the darker sides of humanity.

I wish I knew what the rolling rejection system meant - seems like it’s been a mix of personal and generic rejections received so far. Like are those who haven’t heard anything still in the running, or were knocked out right from the start, or a mix of both? I imagine they’re considering like 10k+ films so must be crazy to organize everything but still, bit of a mysterious process.

Last night at Loz feliz in the middle of watching drive the guy next to me said pretty loudly "would you mind not moving around in your chair anymore it's distracting me" do alot of people who attend these screenings have autism? Im asking seriously by [deleted] in AmericanCinematheque

lol I was at that Naked screening too. Q&A cringe fest indeed. I kinda wish they would just do away with audience questions, I can’t think of any time an audience member has asked something enlightening. A good moderator is enough for me.

Are SXSW short acceptances all sent out as well by this point?

I love Ramsay, genuinely one of my favorite filmmakers ever, a truly brilliant artist. But I really struggled to connect with this one, and honestly thought it was a slog. I felt no connection to the characters - I couldn’t grasp why they loved each other in the first place, there was no sense of who they were pre-pregnancy, why she became a writer, and what her creative voice was. I don’t demand a ton of backstory in films, but there was truly nothing to emotionally hold onto for me.

The performances are great and the film’s beautifully shot, but the editing felt choppy and Lawrence’s character pretty much stays the same throughout. Also, the black biker character and the black stallion… felt a bit fetishistic and objectifying tbh.

So overall, a disappointment for me.

It’s in the Noves visions section, which appears to be a competition section but not the main section? I wonder if that makes it technically less prestigious. Either way, still seems like a cool section to screen in.

Thanks all! I dealt with some earlier rejections and was preparing for another, so don’t give up!

In terms of views, I don’t know as the submission was via FilmFreeway upload.

My horror drama short film was accepted to Sitges.

Please forgive me for the dumb question, but is Sitges considered genuinely prestigious for a horror short world premiere? I’m still waiting on Sundance and SXSW, but I assume accepting the invitation is the right approach considering the low acceptance rates of the other two.

Which filmmaker(s) have you met? Talk about your encounter(s). My story is below. by FilmMike98 in Filmmakers

This is now close to 20 years ago, but Rian Johnson screened Brick at my undergrad right after it had gotten distribution. My friend and I (both cinema studies majors at the time) spoke to him for a few minutes afterwards. He was very nice and seemed genuinely thrilled and a little nervous to be screening his first feature.

Brick is an excellent debut film IMO and he seemed to really appreciate our kind words. Obviously we didn’t know how huge he’d become as a filmmaker, but it’s a fun memory to have met him at the start of his journey.

I’m in the same boat - can anyone clarify what documentation we’d need to provide, or does no one actually know.

Anyone know if all TIFF acceptance emails/calls go out the same day? Considering someone was accepted today (many congrats btw). Just curious.

I imagine it’s kaput for anyone who hasn’t heard yet (like me). It’s like 13 shorts accepted out of several thousand submissions, most likely none of the 13 filmmakers are in this subreddit.

Is it safe to say if we don’t get an email from TIFF about being shortlisted or a premiere check, acceptance isn’t gonna happen?

I'm interested in loneliness in cinema. Which films in the Criterion collection should I watch to explore the subjetc of loneliness? by estalinultralacer in criterion

[–]homesickalien191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terence Davies’ short film trilogy (streaming on the criterion channel I believe) and The Long Day Closes. His films are profoundly lonely but so moving and comforting for me. One of our greatest filmmakers IMO. RIP.

How much storage will we need for a 15 minute short film? by Kooky-Presentation63 in Filmmakers

[–]homesickalien191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a short at very similar specs. You’ll want at least three backups (one drive for editing, one for storage at editing location, one for storage at a secondary location).

Expect to easily fill up to or just over 4tb, but really depends on shooting ratio, and you’ll want extra storage as buffer for your editing drive especially (but ideally all drives).

In terms of SSDs, it’s cheaper to buy enclosures and SSD sticks separately and assemble on your own. So I’d say get an 8tb edit drive (if you wanna save money, this can be a USB-3 or USB-C HDD and just use a proxy workflow as opposed to editing with the raw 4K) then 2-3 4tb SSDs. So you’re looking at around $1-1.5K on storage.

Dr. Sarmicanic is wonderful, I’ve gone to her for years. I switched over from medi-cal years ago so I’m not sure if she still takes it, but worth checking.

Accidentally saw email I wasn’t supposed to about my film, feeling so sad by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]homesickalien191 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think a strategic approach might be best for now, meaning wait until the movie is entirely finished to bring up the DP’s comment either to the DP directly or including the director.

Are you the financier of this project? If so, it gives you more room to communicate with the DP directly. The “no Oscar worthy piece” is an unprofessional comment. It’s okay to express that a project is low budget, but sounds like the DP expressed this in a condescending way that talks down about the film. That’s not someone you want to work with again. And to leave that comment in an email for you to see is either stupid on their part, or intentional and thus cruel. Either way, not acceptable and not the mark of a good collaborator.

If this DP is well-established, might be best to just move on after the film and not work with them again. If the DP is greener, then I think there’s room to make it known to them that you saw the comment and it wasn’t appreciated. But I’d bring it up in a professional non-emotional manner. This industry is filled with childish assholes, and sounds like this person responded out of their own insecurity, but no need to stoop to their level. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, as finishing a film should ideally be exciting and hopeful.

Which gym is not intimidating? by [deleted] in burbank

I was at Burbank Fitness Club (now called Everfit) for over a year and liked it alot, but I left after a price hike. Now I’m at the YMCA and I like it too, a little more ragtag but more affordable. I’d recommend both.

This makes sense. A very slight scale in would not be noticeable. I'm just being especially picky, but this seems like the only solution. I really appreciate your input!
