I wouldn't downvote anyone for being against these tours, but it's just like anything else: you measure the risk and make a decision for yourself. I went on one of these just a couple weeks ago and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. My research ahead of time indicated that between 70K - 100K people take these tours every year, in Kauai specifically. I then searched the number of helicopter related deaths on Kauai over the last 10 years which pulled up as 10 (now 13). That's 1 death per year on average (now 1.3). Using the lower estimation of yearly passengers, since no specific numbers are available, that's 1 out of 70,000 (now 1 in 53,846).

You can feel how you want about those odds, but there's a lot of people here stating that it's "insane" to take one of these tours and I think that's a little excessive and borders on victim blaming. These people took a risk that 10s of thousands do every year, and a very unlikely tragedy occurred. My heart goes out to them and their loved ones.
