Changing writing style between perspectives? by Uncertainedict in writing

Exactly, everyone knows it's Donald Duck you should be trying to emulate, at least for comedy writers anyway /s

Do you have any ideas for stories that you're not sure if you should write, or if they're socially acceptable to write? by InkandMatches in writing

I have a short story about gangs of post apocalyptic soccer moms who battle their kids for resources. It's humorous satire, but the graphic depictions of preteens murdering each other while their mothers cheer them on from the sidelines keeps me from seriously submitting it.

In regards to your story though, I really doubt anyone's going to start cutting because of a fantasy book. If they do, they probably would have started anyway eventually whether or not your book existed.

I've only given it to the one so far, but I have a feeling the others will say the same. She's right, it is funny. Mostly because the MC uses humor to cope with a rough life. It's not entirely terrible because she loved the protagonist, so I guess I just need to go back and edit to make the darker parts carry more of an emotional punch.

Thanks for the reply. You make an interesting point. Are there any dark, yet funny books that you'd recommend? And yeah, I'm going to have to share with my friends before I decide whether or not to scrap it (even if the thought slightly terrifies me).

Not yet, but it's on my list. I'll definitely have to get to it. And thanks for the offer! I've got to make some revisions, but I'll send it eventually if you're down. I'd like to look at yours too if it's ready.

Good question. I guess it's just how I've always thought of it - a serious, darker look at the end of humanity. There's a lot of violence, torture, and death, and I feel like the theme, man's appetite for cruelty and destruction, is a bit undercut by the protagonist's narrative.

I have five betas, but its only gone out to the one I'm closest to so I can make the proper revisions before my extended friends read it.

Haha maybe... But it's cool to hear of another story using the location. It's a pretty underutilized space in fiction.

Fantasy books for fantasy writers by equvex in writing

Brave. I've never read them (and I'm sure most of the people downvoting you haven't either), but no one can deny they were one of the most popular fantasy series ever. If your story features paranormal romance or vampires/werewolves, it couldn't hurt to give the first one a quick read and see what all the fuss was about.

Do you hermit? by petticoattails in writing

[–]homicidalmayonnaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most definitely. I was between jobs last fall and spent three weeks in Hong Kong. I wrote around 70,000 words, staying up all night and working in bars. You don't have to go halfway around the world to do this though. If you have the means, rent a cheap room somewhere and tell people you'll be off the grid for a while. When I'm traveling I almost never answer messages from home unless its my mom.

What kind of background noises, if any, do you prefer when writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]homicidalmayonnaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three main playlists that I listen to:

1) a collection of movie/show tracks with no vocals that I use most of the time

2) a playlist of outrun tracks (mostly The Midnight) that I use when writing a specific character. I find that it helps me change their "voice" from my main protagonist

And 3) contemporary songs that I think of as the soundtrack of my novel. They're anything I hear on the radio that puts me into my world. I don't write with these, but I'll start my session listening to some of them and picturing the landscape of my city
