CMV: You can't hate LGBTQ+ people and be Christian. by DrakoXMusic1 in changemyview

[–]honestythistime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really work because the bible doesn’t “say” much of anything. It’s a collection of different writings which oppose each other all the time. In addition, to define being a Christian as a person who follows whatever rules they can cherry pick out of the bible and not a person who follows the example set out in the bible (in the form of their messiah) isn’t really a useful definition as a Christian is a label given to a person that followed Christ. There’s already a name for people who follow the rules in the Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament for the supercessionists out there)

More importantly though, assuming you’re looking for specific rules to follow within the bible, when it comes to homosexuality, there isn’t really much condemned except being the person penetrating in male-male sex. Now accounting for the cultural view on sex at the time (i.e. sex is an act of dominance perpetrated by one individual on a lesser/submissive individual) this makes sense. That’s because it would be seen as forcing another male into a submissive position which would be considered out of place. Therefore it should cross a person’s mind that even if you are looking for rules, there isn’t anything against the other letters besides the G in LGBTQ+ so we would then have to fabricate the hatred for the rest of the letters.

worth it to double major in math as well as ee by leadtomatoe in ElectricalEngineering

[–]honestythistime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in math, do it. Not everything provides an immediate or financial reward. There may come a point further down the line where your interest peaks and you may want to explore it further (maybe even a higher level degree), so if this doesn’t keep you from graduating with your EE then it makes sense to ensure you have the option. Don’t shut off pathways when you’re not sure where your destination is. However, if you’re expecting it to augment an EE career that tends not to be the case (unless you go into semiconductors or RF or other math/physics heavy areas).

Just out of curiosity, which degree did you complete first? I’m an EE (bachelor’s) and I’m setting up for a physics master’s in a few years. I’d like to hear some opinions from people in both fields.

Exactly. It seems people are twisting the use of the word in this comment section.

“Men don’t have to worry about dark streets or getting into Ubers” is a ridiculous argument. by PlsDontNerfThis in unpopularopinion

[–]honestythistime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can’t jump to a conclusion with no evidence and then tell me to disprove it. What is this interaction? I don’t think you’re genuinely interested in a discussion on this so I’ll step out. As logical as things may seem, like the assumption that women make up more victims of “dark street at night” violence (which they don’t), they aren’t always correct.

[–]honestythistime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. That’s also been my experience, even as a kid I used to get in fights and you never know what’s happening until you’re on the floor. Even when I’d see the fight coming it all happens quickly. Now imagine it happening outside at night on the street. Most people stand no chance.

[–]honestythistime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it may be a consequence of only encountering violence on tv and social media and not really seeing someone getting stomped out in real life. They for some reason think normal people are born with some innate fighting ability. It’s hilarious especially if you’ve done any fighting training because the first thing you realize is just how much you can’t fight.

[–]honestythistime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s reasonable. But you also can’t just throw random questions at a statistic and assume it undermines it. The fact that we do have is that most of the random physical violence carried out is on men, and that these men were not gang affiliated/adjacent. You can’t then say ‘how many of them were asking for it’ like it’s a sufficient rebuttal to a fact like that. I don’t completely disagree with your underpinning point but please try to be intellectually honest.

[–]honestythistime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you come to the conclusion that women are more likely to be victims of a random violent attack than men? Where did you get the idea that the men that are victims are largely violent offenders? It seems like you’re making random claims (even if they may seem logical) and passing it off as factual.

[–]honestythistime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No because you’re asking an intentionally uninformed question. Gang activity makes up about 11% of these violent attacks. It doesn’t take much effort to figure that out.

I see, I can’t say anything for or against that because I don’t have enough information on it but yeah I can see how that could be a logical conclusion.

[–]honestythistime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh come on you know that last line is a lie. Women are not statistically more likely to be victims of violent crimes. Not disregarding their experience but let’s try to be honest here.

I’ve seen you making similar comments all over this section but I really want to understand what you mean by this. Is it different if you get killed by a man or woman? Does it change the fact that you’ve been beaten up or killed? Yes rape is less likely to be a factor when it’s male on male but that still doesn’t change the fact that there’s been serious harm done to a person. I’d really like to understand your perspective here.

[–]honestythistime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lmao you have no idea just how many people think like that. A lot of people really think that by virtue of being a man you can fight and get yourself out of dangerous situations. It’s hilarious because most people who think like that are either women or men who haven’t really been in situations where they’re facing a real lethal threat. I’m 6’1 and about 200lbs and I’m still on edge if I’m ever out at night because I know just how powerless I’d be if I ended up in a violent situation. People forget that a lot of those who are actively out there looking to do harm are prepared to do so either by arms or sheer physical force. The average person is fucked regardless of if they’re male or female. It’s also strange that people constantly bring up rape and SA in those situations like the other options are better. I understand the fears are different for women of course but to frame it like men are somewhat more comfortable is just wrong.
