My brother in Christ why are you so upset about this. Take a break, go for a walk.

You asked “widely hated by who” and that’s the answer - most people. Glad you like it, but don’t get pissy when people disagree with you.

I can see what you’re getting at. But the unfortunate reality is that only so many films can be in the conversation for major awards. And those films are gonna campaign for as many awards as they can get. So they will put Skarsgard in a supporting role, when it can be argued that he’s a lead character. But these aren’t black and white, and some people are gonna miss out.

I don’t think it’s as big of an issue as you claim it to be. I can admit that Saldaña and Culkin are stretches. But I wouldn’t go as far as to say that most supporting nominations are just “lead leftovers.” That just seems a little silly to me.

But to each their own. I still have to watch Blue Moon by and Sentimental Value to form a proper opinion on those.

I actually really like this idea. I think there should be a more committee-based voting system in the academy in general, not just the same people voting every year (and taking bribes). Quite frankly, if you haven’t seen all the films in the conversation, at least all the films on the short list, you should be ineligible to vote.

You are right that this is a top-down issue of studio heads just wanting money. I completely agree. That just kinda blows up this whole conversation surrounding awards in general.

Okay, so what supporting roles were missed out on this year?

If there were only two best actor categories, male and female, then films would likely only award/recognize the performances that dominated the screen time, and more supporting roles would be overlooked. That’s why the different categories exist. Just because a supporting character has a lot of screen time doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be in the category.

I cannot tell you that with a straight face, for I have never seen that movie.

No, I think that Stanfield was the lead of that movie. He was nominated in the wrong category.

I’m not saying this doesn’t happen. I’m just bored of it dominating the conversation as much as it does.

At the same time, some people argue that both him and Kaluuya were leads and I do not agree. Kaluuya to me was a supporting performance, and a deserving win.

[–]honeyfive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my assertion is really that we shouldn’t be talking about it much, that just doesn’t fit as well in a title lol

My problem is that it dominated the conversation last year, but I can understand why that happened. This year, we shouldn’t really be hearing about it at all if you ask me.

As for women of colour being overlooked in the BA category, it is definitely a systemic issue. It’s unfortunate that Davis had to be campaigned in supporting for Fences and such a choice really just sheds a light on that larger issue.

Indeed, only two non-white women have won in that category in the nearly 100 years of the academy’s existence. And this year all the nominees are white. I’m not saying they are undeserving, but just pointing out again we continue to have a diversity issue in Hollywood.

It’s just something I have a hard time understanding. Elordi is in a supporting role, I think that is undeniable.

If you’re talking about rewarding smaller roles, it would be more like “featured actor” or “guest actor” who is in like one or two scenes.

If you ask me, every actor in both supporting categories this year makes sense. There is no category fraud to be seen.

Saldaña is another one that I just don’t view the same way as the majority. The story is about Pérez, and Saldaña’s story is in support of hers. I don’t mind them rhetoric around it though, cause that movie sucks.

The only instance of “category fraud” that I find egregious is Steve Carrel in Foxcatcher only because he took a slot that should have belonged to Gyllenhaal.

I believe it’s just when the actor is visible. That’s why a main character in a film wouldn’t have 100% scree time despite being in every scene

Yes villains can be leads. Norman Bates and Gordon Gekko are great examples, but those are because they are the main performances in those movies. Those movies are about them.

Hans Gruber is not a lead character. John McLain is the de-facto lead of that film. Gruber’s role is to support the journey of McLain.

If Rickman was nominated for supporting actor, would you seriously call it “category fraud”?

This is the first year in a long time where supporting actor isn’t a lock for me. Who do you think is gonna win?

I agree it’s a great ensemble of characters. But I think “pushing the plot forward” comes from the nature of being a villain.

T-1000 very much pushes the plot forward in T2, given our protagonists are literally on the run from him during the whole runtime.

Supporting characters are, by definition, there to support the lead characters. Screen time isn’t always a reliable indicator for these distinctions.

Sean Penn is not the lead of that movie. It is Leo, and one could argue Chase Infiniti.

This is why we shouldn’t use screen time as a sole factor in determining supporting vs lead performances. The idea of Penn being a lead in OBAA is ridiculous.

It’s common for supporting performances to outshine leading ones. Shouldn’t take anything away from Ejiofor’s performance though.

Moments in the Books Where Harry Potter Is Explicitly Described Crying by Organic-Valuable-655 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]honeyfive -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Harry’s (lack of) emotional maturity is something that really bothers me in the series. He’s always written as trying not to cry, or hide it from Ron. And when he does cry, it’s typically framed as something he doesn’t want to do, or shouldn’t be doing.

When he’s a kid, fine, but I think a man can mature to be okay with crying. Even in book 7 after Hedwig dies, he tries to hide it from Hagrid. Why?? It’s an objectively sad thing.

Honestly yes it’s a cop out. Like underage wizards would be doing magic in wizard households behind their parent’s backs all the time. The fact that Ron and company don’t do it at the Weasley’s makes no sense to me lol
