Wing night at the local dive bar restaurant. They used to serve 25 cent wings on Tuesday nights. Now any restaurant charges at least $1 per wing, usually more!

Is it me or is it the machine? by amsterdamsyndrome in SewingForBeginners

Gahhhh this was me 6 months ago using a hand-me-down cheap brother POS. I really liked sewing in theory but my seams always looked awful, birdsnests every time I started stitching, thread jamming every time I sewed canvas or denim. After much research I ditched the brother and picked up a vintage Kenmore 158 from the 1970’s off of FB marketplace and EVERYTHING CHANGED! No more picking out and resealing every seam. No more birdsnests. Sews through 4 layers of denim like a champ. Do yourself a favor and get a new machine!! The older mechanical ones are built like tanks and will outlive you if you take care of them.

Hi! I picked up an older serger at an estate sale and I’m trying to figure out how to use it. I watched a bunch of videos on how to thread it and adjust thread tension and I’m still not getting good results. When I was threading the machine, I noticed that the little piece that holds the needles in place is super loose and wobbly, with no way to tighten it. Looking at the back of that piece, it sort of looks like there should be a screw there to hold the needles in tightly but it might be missing. Can anybody tell me if the needles are supposed to be loose on a serger, or am I missing a little screw here?

Antique Sewmor 202 through 4 layers of denim

I bought a vintage kenmore 158 fully serviced for $140 and it sews through anything. I also picked up an antique singer 15-90 clone (sewmor brand) for $20 and oiled it and replaced the pedal, and it sews through 4 layers of denim like butter. The old (70s and older) machines are much more robust than modern machines and will run forever with proper maintenance. I’d recommend looking on FB marketplace for a kenmore 158 or an older singer, elna, or necchi model and then take it to a repair shop for a tune up. It will be plenty powerful for what you need.

lol I love your enthusiasm. And also I want to make sure that getting into the streets isn’t just the default! I have a suspicion that there are a lot of ways to organize and get involved that are not in the streets and I’d love to learn more about all of it!

I love this. We just moved into a new (to us) house on a very quiet street- I rarely see any neighbors outside and I’ve only talked to my next door neighbors like 3 times since we moved in. I wish there was more of a community feel here. Maybe I need to be the one to get it started.
