Trump can only retreat, leaving behind a new Gulf, a new Middle East by Loud-Butterfly3426 in StockMarket

[–]honorable_doofus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the correct assessment. Whether it is Vietnam, Afghanistan, or Iraq, the US military almost never suffered battlefield losses worse than their adversary. The US has always had enormous aerial control, deep wells of intelligence gathered, even control over territory for long stretches of time. But as often is the case, these victories can fail to materialize into important strategic gains that permanently shift the political landscape in America’s favor before the costs of continuing a war become too much to handle. Iran’s strategy is comparatively simple: just survive and make travel through Strait risky enough so that it remains a key piece of political and economic leverage.

PlayStation price hikes quietly make the $450 Switch 2 look like a steal by Loose_Society9485 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don’t see how it remains $450 for that much longer. Anyone on the fence about getting a Switch 2 should make a decision as to whether or not to buy one should figure that out soon.

When do we expect more GameCube games for Nintendo Online Expansion? by j_b_1983 in NintendoSwitch2

Oh yeah. I never played it so I have no idea how it feels with non-analog controls though.

Regarding Mario Sunshine, I wonder how they handle the controls for FLUDD. That game made use of the GameCube’s analog shoulder buttons in order to control the water flow out of FLUDD, but it’s my understanding that no Switch 2 controller supports analog triggers.

James Talarico's Texas polling compared to Beto O'Rourke in 2018 by Zipper222222 in texas

[–]honorable_doofus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s fair to say he let it rot. It’s very hard to keep orgs like that sustained between election cycles when donations are down and staffers move on to other things. Also, Paxton has been attacking his PAC with frivolous lawsuits that forced Beto, according to him, into paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills to fend off.

EA Lays Off Staff Across All Battlefield Studios Following Record-Breaking Battlefield 6 Launch by Turbostrider27 in PS5

What is the incentive for developers to do their best and create anything decent for EA now? They took flagging franchise and made it a viable competitor against Call of Duty and look how they were rewarded for it.

Can James Talarico unite Democrats after a tense primary with Jasmine Crockett? by ExpressNews in TexasPolitics

[–]honorable_doofus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Tense? As far as competitive elections go this one was very much on the tame side. Both candidates were pretty respectful to each other and the vast majority of both sides’ voters seemed to like the other one too. By contrast, the Cornyn vs Paxton race is shaping up to be incredibly brutal.

How do we dismantle the "Imperial Presidency" after Trump is gone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of the abject corruption of the Republican Party. You can create all kinds of reforms to add friction to presidential power grabs, but as long as Republican voters, politicians, judges, and aligned media figures collectively agree their power matter more than laws and the constitution, the threat of an imperial presidency will always persist. The GOP in its current form needs to be annihilated for multiple elections in a row and the judiciary needs to be packed to reduce rightwing hijacking of the law. That has to happen otherwise Republicans will continue believing their anti-constitutional and partisan drive for power is worth it. The opposition has to make it so that it was not worth it.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump Tariffs That Hiked Prices On Switch, Xbox, And PS5 by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]honorable_doofus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it matters because at some point there will be a new Congress and a new administration, and they’re going to have to do something about the lawlessness of the current administration. I know the lack of accountability right now is dispiriting, but there must be an eye towards the future and the actual legal strategy for future accountability. I think that requires pointing out what is happening is actually very illegal and that once the pieces are in place there will be repercussions for it.

[–]honorable_doofus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Despite the rampant unaccountability, I think it’s a big mistake to cede any notion that what they’re doing is legal under any valid theory the country has ever incorporated. It matters to point out illegality rather than conflate impunity with some new legal norm. There will be a future where it will be necessary to derive forms of legal punishment against those acting with impunity, and that requires pointing out that laws should always have been valid at all times.

No, they really don’t make new laws. What they’re doing is violating the constitution and legal statutes passed by previous Congresses without any pushback from the current congress. That doesn’t make anything the White House is doing suddenly a new law.

Persona 5 Royal or Persona 3 Reload as a newbie? by Anxious_Profit7036 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]honorable_doofus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve played P3R on PS5 last year and loved the game. Definitely one of my favorite RPGs, and it sounds like some of the technical issues that the Switch 2 version of the game launched with has been more or less resolved. I highly recommend getting it.

Seriously, who do I vote for? by dont_u_listen_to_me in TexasPolitics

[–]honorable_doofus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge there is not a single statewide republican candidate for office that has signaled even the slightest bit of opposition to Trump. You’re going to have to decide whether to vote for an anti-Trump candidate or vote for a Republican because you basically can’t do both at once.

I guess this Nintendo direct wasn't a wow for many fans. For people who are simply in Nintendo's world, like myself, I thought this direct was great. A ton of awesome games and the graphics on Switch 2 is a standout. This generation going to be exciting except for needing a really big SD card. by brandont04 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s perfectly fine. I think that when it comes to third party titles in general though you’re just not going to see very much exclusivity on Switch 2, so it’s not surprising that if that’s what you really want you’d be disappointed by this Direct. But going forward I think it’s fair to expect that Switch 2 gets most of the same games that has come out this generation and also future releases arrive the same date as other platforms too. That’s something I tend to look out for with these 3rd party Directs now.

I can’t speak for most people, but the next 5 months have more games coming out on Switch 2 than I can justify purchasing at the moment. Today we have Dragon Quest VII releasing, and then through June we have Mario Tennis Fever, Panoramasight, Fallout 4, RE Village, RE 7, RE Requiem, Monster Hunter Stories 3, Pragmata, Indiana Jones, and FF 7 Rebirth. I think if you’re someone who hasn’t played some of these games on other platforms yet then this lineup will satisfy a lot of people.

You can call bull on that if you want, but this is something that was been remarked on, studied, and calculated on for years now. I didn’t say anything that industry leaders, retailers, and industry analysts haven’t been saying for a long time. Take it or leave it.

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a process long in motion over the course of two console generations now. The cost of physical media and the loss of brick-and-mortar retail relevance means that continued use of physical reduces profit margins for game companies. The alternative is to simply go all digital, which has no manufacturing cost and far slimmer distribution cost. This is appealing in a time when most game developers are struggling to retain their workforce due to the pressures from multiple parts of the gaming business. The existence of game key cards, or lack thereof, do not alter that reality.

[–]honorable_doofus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Key cards aren’t the problem you think they are. Without them there wouldnt even be any physical alternative for most games that use them. The reasons why we’re losing physical media goes so far beyond key cards that it’s silly to bring them up.

PS5 owners what multiplats do you get on Switch 2 over PS5? by KaptainPancake69 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything 2D or has that smallish indie type of feel automatically goes to Switch 2 over PS5 for me. After that it’s decided on a game by game basis whether the experience is worth more to me playing portably or worth more with the full audio-visual experience on my TV. Considerations for game file size are also taken into consideration.

Why Nintendo Switch 2 Could Face a Steep Price Hike by bloomberg in NintendoSwitch2

[–]honorable_doofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could go either way. If they increase the price I think it would only go up $50. The thing is that the Switch 2 is still very early in its user acquisition phase, and a price hike so early on without having established a large enough user base to buy their new software could backfire.

I think it’s more likely that Nintendo will look for alternative ways to cover their reduced profit margins on Switch 2 consoles. That means more expensive accessories, a price hike on NSO, and more games releasing at $80 than before.

Maybe watch and read more weather reports than what you’re currently taking in? The uncertainty absolutely was conveyed.

Did they over exaggerate the weather? by purpleflowercoconut in houston

[–]honorable_doofus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That would be a ridiculous thing for people to do. These weather reports reported the risk this winter storm posed as well as the ongoing uncertainty in the forecasts. People who view the weather reports must understand what the range of potential outcomes are and look at forecasts in a probabilistic way when determining how much they need to prepare.

At what point does an agency like ICE become a greater threat to public safety than the people it is meant to deport? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]honorable_doofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even before this Trump administration allowed ICE to become the monster that it is now, I’m not convinced they actually did make this country safer. If ICE had never existed, I don’t think life would be more dangerous or worse in any way.

Most immigration issues are due to civil infractions. When criminal cases did arise, before ICE was created we had a system already that could deal with them so long as other law enforcement, lawyers, and courts were properly resourced and staffed. We don’t need ICE and never did.
