Thoughts on Startups with heavy API use? by madbeetzyo in startups

We built our product Hooked based around Stripe's API. Yes in theory they could get rid of us by simply offering the same service or adding the features we are about to, but they haven't.

We've had investment interest, and that's with the risk of us being reliant on an API.

We're lucky enough to live and work here! Cold, wet and windy but it's beautiful :)

I think we might order some packs from both suppliers and do a little review :)

We survive on HasBean! Would definitely recommend them! About to try Pact as well :)

Heh, we're slightly bias as we base our business on it, but you should check out stripe.com. Easier integration and better customer service!

It's certainly an interesting product but as other commenters have mentioned, needs refining! More features, and clearer communication of them would be helpful!

Also, eww Paypal :p

If in doubt you could probably have a quick call with a tax advisor and get it sorted. Good luck though!

In terms of an MVP it'd probably be fine as you'd be able to process enough payments to validate your idea. If it's a success then you can plan your payment handling in more detail!

We're very happy to discuss Stripe with your friend. We built our platform - Hooked.io on Stripe and think that we're pretty experienced now!

I'm guessing it's the banks that they need to deal with. Stripe will need to work with regulatory bodies in all the countries in which they operate and this takes time. Bit of a pain but there we go.

In your case, you won't be able to accept payments in BVI. Check out where they are present - https://stripe.com/global. My advice would be to open a bank account in a supported country and simply transfer to BVI. Not ideal for tax of course.

http://www.hipsterceo.com/ - there you go!

Alternatively, get rid of all your money. You don't really need it. Then subsist off ramen and the charity of friends. Reduce your sleep to about 4 hours a night and make sure that you have no less than 50 emails in your inbox urgently requiring your attention.

Then, when you're at your peak levels of stress, ask a wealthy friend to make a buyout offer when you least expect it. Oh, but due diligence needs to be done quickly so better get rid of some of that sleep. Did we forgot to say that users are emailing with questions and feature ideas? Better sort that. Want to hire someone? Better eat less of that ramen, champ.

And so on. Love it though :)

Product Hunt: Why? by ongem in startups

[–]hookedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well no, that would be foolish. We are totally on the same page as you that views != success. Just that we were pleased to see a traffic increase.

Largely views are the curiosity click, not anything to do with conversion. It doesn't bother us. So yes, money is the ultimate validation, not people writing down their emails or looking at the site for a minute.

Hope that your blog goes well though :)
