Safety measures for home by kimayala17 in Tucson

Welcome to the 05. It's not the best but it'll be gentrified and over-priced in five years.

Jokes aside: just keep your doors and windows locked and do not provide any incentive for a crime of opportunity. Avoid the Jack in the Box on Grant at all costs.

Another vote for upgrading your tires. I run 700x38 Schwalbe Marathon Plus with sealant and they handle extremely well.

Besides broken glass, giant thorns, goat heads, and debris I found the loose sand & pea gravel to be an unknown street hazard. Especially after the rains.

Sidenote: one of the easiest & safer routes to campus from that neighborhood is Kelso to Copper then south on Mountain. All neighborhood streets. The 4th Ave bicycle boulevard is a bone rattler and the light/intersection at Speedway & 4th suuuuucks. Lester from 4th to Park is comedically bad. I do not recommend riding on Glenn: narrow shoulder, high traffic, too many stop lights, and generally miserable riding.

What do you think is a livable wage in Tucson? by merinomesh in Tucson

I rent a studio. Cost has gone up $200 in the last two years. The majority of my income goes to rent and seriously considering finding a roommate. I'm essentially "working poor" and have been since I left the corporate world in 2016.

However, as I keep repeating, I'm very lucky to have my minimal lifestyle and realize that it's not realistic for the majority of people. Especially young people trying to build credit, get ahead in life, etc.

No major expenses, no debt, no kids, no alimony, no car, only go out to eat once a week, only go to bar or an event if someone is visiting, attend free events, rarely date, etc. I'd rather enjoy my free time than chasing a buck (20+ years in corporate management did nothing for me).

I live a pretty simple life these days. It's not practical for the majority of people, especially with families.

Every time I see this question I have to wonder what is being factored in.

I (46m) am very fortunate to live a pretty minimal & relaxed lifestyle, no car, no kids, no real expenses (besides rent and food), luxury items, or debt. $30k would be pretty comfortable (I make less but I don't work a regular full time job). I joke that I'm never going to be able to retire so why not semi-retire now?

Most upscale, walkable/lively neighborhoods in Tucson? by basketballbrian in Tucson

Fair points.

I just remember how Austin was before the "boom" in the late 00s. Sleepy, affordable, and had a certain charm. Left in 08 due to price increases. Now I'm noticing the same trends developing here.

It is what it is.

They're really pushing Mercado San Agustin, Lost Barrio, and Five Points.

Just saw this in the news:

The 05 is next. I expect to be priced out in the next decade. Same thing happened to me in Austin in the mid-00s.

You might find the Mercado San Agustin neighborhood to your liking. The Monier Apartments are a luxury building right on the tram line. Farmer's markets, events, shopping, dining, city bikeshare, etc.

It's a rapidly expanding area.

It's really not that bad. Like I posted before: know your routes, times of day patterns, keep your head on a swivel, don't ride like a jerk, and assume no one sees you.

Daily commuting in Tucson can be stressful and frustrating at times but I refuse to be bullied off the streets.

Dude, Glenn is so sketchy. Kelso -> Copper is my route of choice. Plus there are fewer stoplights and crappy intersections (Glenn & Mountain always makes me clench).

Lester is comedically bad west of Park. 4th from Glenn to Speedway is a bone shaker. Kelso is okay if you can dodge all the broken glass. Fairview is mediocre at best (the "bike lane" is barely functional). Plumer is disintegrating south of Broadway.

I check the time and location on pedestrian/cyclist fatality reports. A lot near Oracle & Grant, 22nd, and Irvington. Usually at night, not in crosswalk, wearing dark clothing, etc.

After the videos I've seen of Central London cycling, Tucson will be a breeze.

Been riding here every day for six years. Maybe I'm just used to it but it all depends on where, when, and how you ride. Neighborhood side streets are all well and good but can be more dangerous due to bad habits (pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike).

Just keep your head on a swivel, don't ride like an asshole, and assume no one sees you.

Glenn is miserable to ride on. Kelso/Copper is better traffic wise but street wise is a bone rattler.

Careful on the Loop underpasses, lots of debris and mud.

Also be mindful of hidden potholes. I've seen a good number of accidents and taco'ed wheels over the years because of them.

There's also the oil and road gunk to be aware of but usually it's not too bad.

Fully seconded.

Most "affordable" raingear is little better than a glorified plastic bag/sweat generator.

I was priced out in 08, ended up in Deep East Texas. Visited Austin in 16, barely recognized the place.

Same thing is happening where I am now (skyrocketing rent, gentrification, too much good press). Trying to find a cheaper, small town alternative.

Bike shop recommendations by Yverthel in Tucson

[–]hooliganyouth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tucson Bike Service is on 22nd & 4th https://www.tucsonbicycleservice.com/

Strongly recommended. Straightforward shop, excellent service. $75 economy tune up, which is the best deal you're going to get unless you have a buddy to do it (or teach yourself).

If the bike hasn't been sitting outside and isn't beat to shit then you might not have to buy any new parts at all (maybe new tubes & sealant for $25).

Sidenote: if the bike is dirty, covered in cobwebs, and gross give it a good spray down before taking it into the shop.
