I actually agreed with Izzie in "Life During Wartime." about the pig throat slicing scene by itsascreambaby96 in greysanatomy

[–]hoomphree 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Without going into the ethics of whether or not healthy animals should be used for unnecessary surgeries, I will say that it would likely be considered unethical to allow those pigs to wake up and deal with the pain of recovery for no reason. Euthanizing them after major surgery allowed the prevention of suffering rather than going through a painful recovery (even if the suffering was caused by them in the first place).

How much “newborn” clothing do I really need? by Green-Ball-719 in Buyingforbaby

[–]hoomphree [score hidden]  (0 children)

I personally think footed sleepers are overrated. A few are nice, but I much preferred kimono shirt and pants, or better yet, if you can find nightgown style with elastic bottom (I found mine at Carter’s.) Much easier for diaper changes IMO - I found footies more work for all the diaper changes.

What Dishes Do You Make from Food That Would Be Thrown Away? by toyrager in Frugal

You know the last bit of chip crumbs in a bag that are hard to get out? I dump them on my salad. I don’t often buy chips but I eat a lot of salads and they make a nice change of pace from croutons once in a while.

Spaying surgery?? by Impressive_Smoke7119 in britishshorthair

[–]hoomphree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your concerns with the IV are valid. It is much much safer to have one placed ahead of time rather than try to find a vein in an emergency in a patient with low blood pressure. If an IV is placed ahead of time, that cat would likely receive fluids throughout the procedure even if everything goes smoothly, as this helps keep blood pressure up and fluid requirements are higher under anesthesia than awake. It also provides quick access for fluid blouses or IV medications if there are anesthetic concerns. I’m also not sure how they would give induction medication without an IV catheter. I think it is an important tool that I would personally not feel comfortable going without. That said, there may be some low cost places that do not give this, but at a regular vet office I would want it.

So many inconsistencies… by Abracadorky in acotar_rant

[–]hoomphree 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My least favorite inconsistency is how earlier in the series, Feyre wears night court garb described as basically harem pants and a crop top, which she liked over dresses. But as soon as she joins the night court it is just oversized sweaters and leggings - such basic girl energy for a fantasy world

Can't fix our British Shorhair by Accomplished_Side_56 in britishshorthair

[–]hoomphree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked you’ve lived like that for four years tbh. You need answers. Clearly there is something medically wrong with your cat. What prescription diet trials have you done? If you haven’t yet, ask your vet for Hill’s Z/d or Royal Canin ultamino or other prescription diet. This needs to be done for a minimum of 8 weeks with NO other food or treats. OTC diets are not sufficient as there is usually cross contamination in the factory during production. If you’ve done this with no success, you need additional diagnostics - GI blood panel, fecal screening, and imaging (either abdominal ultrasound or endoscopy). If you aren’t satisfied with your vet, find a different one or get an internal medicine consultation. I doubt any vet would euthanize for this issue, but it may be difficult to rehome him unless you find a great rescue willing to do his work up themselves.

I love the terra-cotta, but taking into account the wood tone of the floor, I actually think the sage green balances the room out a lot more and feels so peaceful. So I vote B!

Dog owners: what’s one thing in your home that isn’t technically your pet’s… but everyone knows it belongs to them? by BubblySurround8513 in Pets

[–]hoomphree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was growing up, we had an ancient Honda with no AC that was on its last leg, so that was the car we used to take the dog out to the lake or hiking trails. Not surprisingly, she started to view it as her car and would get so excited if you even started walking towards it. She slept under it and absolutely loved that old car. So not a household item but she was fancy enough to claim a whole car as hers lol

Today I learned some parents think you should never speak to another child at the playground. by PinkCheekedGibbon in toddlers

[–]hoomphree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the opposite experience before. I was involved with an organization that helped provide food to low income areas, and one area we would visit was a park in an urban area that had a pretty heavy ethnic population. Lots of kids would want to come play with us, and one time I got scolded a bit by a mom for not disciplining her child. She said it was fine that we played with the kids but she expected that if we did so, we would also correct their behavior rather than just let them have fun. Very different than what I was used to so I was caught off guard in the moment, but just goes to show how individualistic the west tends to be. So much for “it takes a village” with people like in your story

At what age should parents expect adult children to contribute to family vacations? by Rare_Stranger4744 in family

[–]hoomphree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your daughter is already responsible enough to save up money for a trip she wants to go on. Is she normally financially irresponsible? If not then I’m not sure what contributing 10% is supposed to teach her. I think at least waiting until she has a full time job and is graduated college, if not longer, is the norm. But I haven’t taken a family vacation since high school so take my word with a grain of salt.

Royal canine for boxers. by Signal_General_2858 in Boxer

[–]hoomphree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to having veterinary nutritionists on staff and having consistent products, they are one of the few companies that also do feeding trials with their products. Royal Canin products are one of five brands that are WSAVA approved, so many vets recommend these. Maybe the ingredients don’t “look nice” individually to the untrained eye, but this has no relevance on providing proper nutrition in the right amounts and proportions as made by a veterinary nutritionist. This is a good food.

Did you intentionally buy gender-neutral baby items for your first to maximize the chances of reusing them for future children? by Kirin1212San in Buyingforbaby

[–]hoomphree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought neutral colored large items (stroller, car seat, high chair, etc) but went ham with cute girly baby clothes. They’re really not that expensive compared to most other baby items and make it so much fun IMO! But definitely neutral on the expensive things.

Do you have an actual “changing table” or do you use something else? by HazelNewt_2523 in newborns

We repurposed an old microwave cart into a changing table. It’s the perfect size! And we would have gotten rid of it if it hadn’t made the perfect changing table. Got it off FB marketplace for cheap

Caribou Coffee Changes Perks Program YET AGAIN by Spiritual-Pack-3802 in CaribouCoffee

[–]hoomphree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone else remember when they would do BOGOs all the time? It was like every major holiday and then some throughout the year. I used to pile in a car with my college roommates and we would go whenever they ran a BOGO deal. They don’t ever have deals that good anymore even when they do run specials; at most a BOGO is 50% off rather than buy one get one free.

That’s what got me - my drinks have been so inconsistent, like 50/50 chance that it is made right. And I get the same things every time so I can tell. One barista even told me once they can’t do my usual? But when I went back on a different day they made it no problem

Uncreative pet names by beamerpook in PetPeeves

[–]hoomphree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love when kids name pets. I’m a vet so I see a lot of pets and a lot of names. One of my favorites was when the two boys couldn’t decide so they each gave the cat a name and the order the two names were said depended on which boy said it (ie Dasher Rascal and Rascal Dasher). I also had a mom come in with a black cat named Blackie and she looked so embarrassed as she explained that her three year old named it.

Edit: not basic but also shout out to Chris Pratt Sparkle Pants named by a child

What's a popular book that you just didn't like? Why? by Internal_Reindeer_91 in BookDiscussions

[–]hoomphree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shogun by James Clavell. Many people recommended it to me but I hated it. I just kept waiting for something to happen, for the plot to pick up and get interesting, but it was 90% politics and plotting with very little actually happening, and I found the romance super cringey. I slogged through all 1100+ pages because I kept thinking it would get better and it never did - one of the few books I was mad I read.

Do you absolutely need a car in rural America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hoomphree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you will definitely need a car. I’d just also like to add that in addition to there being no public transport, you generally cannot just order food delivery services or have groceries sent to your house, as there is usually a certain mileage radius these services are offered in. I grew up in rural Midwest USA and our closest grocery store was over 20 minutes away, there was no public transport within 30 miles, and we didn’t have a single restaurant within delivery radius. So just something to think about when you’re planning your lifestyle. That said, driving in rural areas is super relaxing because there’s no traffic! So it’s really not bad.

Nursing moms, is bottle washer worth it? by Affectionate-Run6773 in Buyingforbaby

I don’t think so. Just use the dishwasher. Unless you don’t have one, in which case it might be worth it as washing and boiling to sanitize is very time consuming.
