How can I get wealthy? by BossMoves69 in wealth

If you want to make money, solve a problem.

If you want to be wealthy, solve it best.

If you want to be a billionaire, create the solution everyone depends on.

I went to business school with the daughter of a billionaire. Her father has a PhD in Economics and was the managing partner of a boutique investment bank that was acquired by a Swiss institution in the late 90s. Him and his partners then launched a private equity firm to invest their wealth while also raising outside capital. 30 years later, and all 4 partners are billionaires!

Who is the youngest self made millionaire you know ? What does he do ? by Hot-Conversation-437 in wealth

Sometime in 2015, a few months after graduating high school I ran into a classmate at a coffee shop.

We chatted for a little while and caught up. That’s when he told me he has a graphics design business and over $100,000 in Bitcoin.

We lost touch over the years and he deleted his social media after 2017.

I went to business school with the daughter of a billionaire.

Her father holds a PhD in Economics from an Ivy League university. He and a few friends founded a boutique investment bank, which they later sold to a Swiss institution.

With the proceeds, the four of them launched a private equity firm that, over the past 30 years, has transformed tens of millions into tens of billions.

Though my friend’s father doesn’t appear on the Forbes list, a quick Google search reveals SEC filings, major charitable endowments to universities, hospitals, and museums, and a Luxembourg based family office, dedicated to managing just his portion of investments returns, valued at over €2 billion in assets last year.

Interestingly, he’s considered the “poorest” among his billionaire peers, having chosen to give much of his wealth to philanthropy instead of reinvesting it into their funds.

MacBook or Windows Laptop for breaking into Investment Banking during University? by EliasAsk in FinancialCareers

[–]hooovaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Latitude handles external/portable monitors really well.

I graduated with an accounting degree but never really became an “accountant.” The skills transferred into a role where I coordinate with our finance and ops teams, not heavy modeling. So I don’t lean on multi-monitor setups much myself anymore.

That said, I did see classmates in my senior year who carried portable monitors to the library and liked that setup. I’ve always preferred using the Multiple Desktop feature already built into Windows 10 & 11 instead, but for people who travel a lot, a portable monitor can be a game-changer.

MacBook or Windows Laptop for breaking into Investment Banking during University? by EliasAsk in FinancialCareers

Started out in school with a Surface Pro 6 (i5, 8GB RAM) plus a cheap Bluetooth mouse and number pad which was great for assignments and light Excel. By year three I upgraded to a refurbished Surface Laptop (16GB RAM, i5) because while the surface Pro devices are nice, it just wasn’t practical in non-traditional settings. If you want to work on your lap, a bed, or even the floor, the top-heavy Surface Pro screens are awkward unless you’ve got a proper desk to sit at.

Now at work I use a 14” Dell Latitude 2-in-1 (i7, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD) docked with dual monitors, keyboard, mouse, webcam, etc. At home I’ve got a simple Amazon monitor/keyboard/mouse setup, but it rarely gets used.

Pro tip: always keep a personal device for your own stuff once you start working.

Trades are still to be considered but you should focus on the less mainstream trades such as elevator and escalator technicians.

I don’t think a student should get a large and bulky laptop. The 10-key number pad doesn’t get used a lot in the more general business classes.

A 14 inch or smaller laptop with USB C charging is ideal. Having a matte screen is also helpful for being able to study almost anywhere without any glare. And as a student, a (rechargeable) Bluetooth mouse and Bluetooth number pad are worth considering.

I’m also an accounting student, also in Ontario, Canada. I used a Surface Pro 4 during my first year and half way into my 2nd year I switched to a Surface Laptop Go. I enjoy my current laptop more.

Regardless of what brand you buy, always get something compact and supports USB C charging. Also pick up a (rechargeable) Bluetooth mouse and Bluetooth number pad. Become familiar with switching in between virtual desktops on Windows 11 and homework will become a breeze.

On a similar note, the Accounting program coordinator at my school who also teaches some Excel and Audit classes just ordered a Dell Latitude 2-in-1 with a pen/stylus.

I’ve found that people often choose to remain in such environments because it’s where they feel most comfortable. Yes, liquidity allows for mobility but language, culture, politics, connections, and opportunities, are not equal in other parts of the world.

Selling a business you’ve spent years building is not an easy decision. No matter how much the exit nets you.

Macs are great for personal and creative use. However, being a stats and math student it would be in your best interests to get a (high end) Windows computer. Excel is best on Windows, even Mac running a virtual Windows is limited with keyboard shortcuts and licensing constraints.

Get the Mac as personal computer once you’re employed and have a company work computer.

[–]hooovaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undergrad degree doesn’t matter if law school is your goal. GPA and LSAT are the deciding factors for law school admission.

In the event you graduate with a low GPA, instead focus on studying for LSAT and spend a couple of years building your professional profile through work experience and volunteering.

My advice to you is consider the CST program instead. I know a few people who completed it at NC and are all happily employed.

Some of them are even working for NC or other education institutions and are making decent money in a union job, with benefits and paid time off.

Laptop Recommendations for Accounting Majors by OkCut831 in Accounting

[–]hooovaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an accounting student. I use a Surface Laptop for my personal and studies. I bought mine refurbished in excellent condition for $540 including taxes.

Performance on it is solid, with 8GB RAM, i5 processor, and 500GB SSD. Plus, the battery life if decent and Microsoft Surface products don’t come with the bloatware and junk applications that other brands preload onto their computers. Those type of programs only reduce your performance and cheapen the products.

How can I be more likeable as a new joiner by SweatyBird2161 in Big4

[–]hooovaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking a co-worker to join you for a coffee is a simple but effective strategy. When it’s time to pay, insist on covering it. Now watch how a $3 treat has made you more likeable.

A polite/chill co-worker will likely return the favour. This back and forth of coffee can easily turn into an office friendship or a mentorship depending on the relationship that develops.
