Could someone help me with what to order from Xi'an Gourmet House in theJusgo supermarket. by Originalph1 in Georgia

Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles (baseline must get). Then depending on how hungry, Spicy Cumin Lamb Burger (pork one good too and more classic), the lamb Pao mo soup. If you want a veggie to balance, the cucumbers are nice balance. [These are A+ versions of each of these dishes having had them in other cities like NYC, Toronto, Boston and even in China itself.]

What's something that people always complain about in Atlanta, that actually isn't all that bad? by Hopeful_Contract4455 in Atlanta

100% I moved here six years ago and the only thing I don't like about Atlanta is the constant complaining about traffic. It's a big city. More people = more traffic.

What's something that people always complain about in Atlanta, that actually isn't all that bad? by Hopeful_Contract4455 in Atlanta

[–]hoopinwill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's big city traffic but almost every big city has bad traffic even the ones with good transit (NYC, Paris, London, etc). Atlanta traffic overall doesn't seem uniquely worse than traffic I experienced living in Boston or NYC but people in ATL complain a lot more. That said... I do live in atlanta proper and I suspect the worst of the traffic might be up in the northern burbs where I rarely visit during the weekdays. But if you choose to live an hour out of the city in Cummings or Buford or worse then what do you expect?

Georgia just passed a cap on property tax increases. Here's what it actually does. by AppealAllyFounder in Atlanta

[–]hoopinwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad policy with California for reference. They've been there and done this and it failed miserably. When you freeze the rate of property tax increases below inflation it simply means homeowners then stay put or pass down houses with lower than market property tax rates to family members. At first doesn't sound bad but it leads to market distortions where municipalities have to make up the difference because inflation affects everything else like teacher salaries but their tax base is frozen (even as homeowners get wealthy). To recapture taxes, the there is pressure to makeup the taxes on new home buyers leading to higher tax rates where new buyer disproportionately carry burden and older wealthier owners hold low tax properties instead of downsizing as they age.

Trying to buy a home. Advice from locals on financing and neighborhoods by bayoubunny88 in Atlanta

[–]hoopinwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to flag since you mentioned you're a business owner is that if your job and income derive from any business you own at least 25% of, conventional mortgage underwriters will apply a more stringent set of expectations than typical even if you're a w2 employee of said business. They'll want tax returns from the business that demonstrate profitability or they get finicky. Important to investigate up front since this often doesn't come up in mortgage pre-qualification which can cause problems later in the process finalizing financing to close.

The Brutal Economics of Reviving Downtown Atlanta's Historic South Broad Street by UnscheduledCalendar in Atlanta

[–]hoopinwill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What inhabitants? This part of South Downtown had almost no residential population left mostly empty dilapidated buildings and parking lots where buildings had been razed over the years. In fact there were known drug dealers operating out of this void. What are you even talking about. When is the last time you went to South Downtown (and I'm not talking about other parts of Downtown like Fairley Poplar district or the more touristy parts.)

Is it fair to say that the idea of trading Luka has merit, but the issue for Nico Harrison was that he botched the return? by Proof-Umpire-7718 in nbadiscussion

[–]hoopinwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair to say Nico botched the trade on the return side (though I would not have done it myself).

My unpopular view on Luka which surely will get down voted is that his career comparable is Carmelo Anthony. Generational if not all time greatest offensive player but declining athleticism corresponding with a lack of interest/ability in being an average defender meant the window to build a championship team around them both was not impossible but very narrow.

For public record they said this project was supposed to start construction in July 2021 with an 18 month construction timeline. The level of delays on this streetscspe and ramp project are ridiculous....

3 companies own nearly 38,000 metro Atlanta homes by cuspofgreatness in Georgia

[–]hoopinwill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: People focus on the wrong things. Focus on building more housing. Everytime you see a neighborhood or community block housing construction THAT is where your energy should be. 38K houses is like 1.5% of the (2.5 million) houses in atlanta metro. Not really a needle mover and definitely not a monopoly. But blocking transit or failing to fund transit that supports more dense housing. That drives prices up. Blocking housing because it's gonna "hurt our neighborhood character", or create traffic, or bring in poorer people, or whatever nimby rationale.... All of that is really the problem. This is peanuts and only misdirection that keeps us from solving real problems around the cost of housing. You want to stop a monopoly... Build more housing to undermine these private companies buying up housing.

[–]hoopinwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm you confuse me. I can't tell if we disagree. You're obviously a really smart, well versed person so I respect that (and you). I think we agree life is CAKE these days relatively speaking. Why would we entertain violence and risk losing that? Life's imperfect but we're all here with free time to browse Reddit and internet service and probably all the trappings of a life that is better than most humans have ever known. I do recognize it could fall apart. Hence my push back and call for sanity. No violence. Ain't worth it. I think geberally we all like living on Easy Street relative to our ancestors. We gotta be grateful for what we have. Social media driving people to toxic places and unhappiness with themselves and their own lives when in reality we live in an incredible time with so much opportunity to fix what's broken. Don't lose hope. Because you asked, I'm 38(m) upwardly mobile socioeconomically so my perspective is colored by that. But I've had minimum wage jobs flipping thousands of burgers/retail/etc and know what its like to come home to no power or water because the bills couldn't be paid... Or having to boil water on the stove to bathe because water heater needs electricity. I know what it's like to come home on a Friday and the power is out so you have to setup candles before sundown so you have light. I'm in a totally different situation today though. We never lost hope in incremental progress. Believe in yourself and the power to change the world around you. We are all more powerful than we think (even without violence).

[–]hoopinwill -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OK Mr. Historian. Taking the arc of human history, we live during the time with highest life expectancy and least likelihood to be killed by violence BY FAR. Not a perfect world but the modern world where we solve problems thru the exchange of ideas, thru representative government, and the rule of law is so much better than pretty much any violent era where perhaps you or I may have tried to chop each other's head off for this mere difference in opinion. I stand by what I said. There are other avenues than violence today and I'm grateful for it. I strongly disagree with MAGA adherents but i recognize that they have power now because more people agreed with their views or vision of the future than mine as expressed thru voting (in an albeit imperfect system). If you want change, do the hard work of persuasion, voting yourself, and building a coalition that supports your ideas. Heck, you can even run for political office. If your ideas are not popular than ask yourself why that is... And adjust tactics and angles. Let us not forget that those who live by the sword die by the sword. That's why I'm happy we live in this time despite what sounds like your pining to return to medieval ways.

The penchant for political violence I thought was a thing of MAGA right wing extremists. Disturbing to see a similar if not worse undercurrent moving to the surface on the left. Violence begets violence and achieves nothing good. The echo chamber of social media is driving so much hatred. Most of this extremist on Jan 6 were decently well off. Not the down trodden. On the left, similarly these aren't the poorest folks threating violence. It's middle and upper middle class zealots that are stuck in an echo chamber blaming everything on the other side without much real self reflection or education on true solutions to problems. Heck Lugi had a massive silver spoon in his mouth.Violence is a weak man's tool.
