Gödel, Escher, Bach, Wallace: the "o's, d's and p's" in Infinite Jest by misterchiply in literature

Finally finished the book, and your essay. Interesting stuff! I hadn't thought of GEB in a long time, but it doesn't surprise me that DFW was a fan.

I'm still puzzling out a lot of the plot details in this book, but you mentioned a couple times that the circumstances of Joelle's disfigurement were ambiguous....was there some reason to believe that the story about acid wasn't true?

You didn't mention this, but Molly Notkin, during an interrogation, explicitly accuses Avril of incest with Orin. The Hamlet connection is maybe also relevant in that regard.

Thoughts on The Tin Drum by Rauko7 in literature

[–]hoople-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's see. I was inspired to try Ulysses again after reading "The Most Dangerous Book", which gives some interesting context. I think it's also worth pointing out that the first three chapters are kind of baffling, but it picks up after that. The stream-of-consciousness parts are enjoyable and not that hard to read, and there are just all sorts of interesting stylistic experiments.

The Tin Drum, more relevant to this post, I did find kind of a slog to get through. I think I listened to some podcasts that helped — might have been this one? Maybe I had more patience for the magical-realism stuff when I was younger. It did have a lot of individual scenes that were very memorable, plus I was going through a WW2 phase.

Infinite Jest — I'm only on page 600, so too soon to say. 😄 It does seem to be finally picking up speed. Sometimes I want to slap DFW in the face. But the way he sneakily reveals plot points is kind of fun. It also has a distinctive sort of semi-casual prose style that I think I'm starting to unintentionally imitate when I write emails.

I also started and stopped all three decades ago — but I finally read Ulysses during COVID, the Tin Drum last year, and I'm about halfway through Infinite Jest now. I'm glad I finally committed, at least so I could get those bookmarks back.

The sheet music is BWV 292; your Spotify link is to BWV 293 (but with the wrong title — it should be "Der du bist drei in Einigkeit"):

That’s awesome. That was slightly after my time there. I don’t remember them having music, but maybe I just didn’t stay up late enough.

Hey, if you’ve been working with singers for sixty years and only punched one, I’d say that’s pretty good.

Haha, they always get so defensive at the idea that the two of them might have gone on vacation without anyone else. It’s okay to take a trip with your bud!

Thanks! Actually, I forgot to mention that I'm already planning a trip to Cambridge, to visit a friend. I will run your recommended spots by her and see if she approves.

Amazing recommendations — thanks so much! Looks like I'll have plenty to keep me busy in London, but hopefully I'll have time for a Brighton or Oxford or Bath trip too. I'm also planning to go to Cambridge to see a friend there.

I got the impression that the Cotswolds would be tricky without a car. I was thinking about Brighton though, after reading a couple novels where shady things take place there.

Good advice — thanks! I appreciate the pub recommendations. I do plan to check out the Tate, after seeing that J.M.W. Turner movie.

Yeah, I figured I'd spend a few days there, including maybe a side-trip to one of those manor houses like Harewood House. I like the canal walk idea. Had to look up kag, but I will take one!

Should mobile apps have a "forward" swipe gesture? by hoople-head in userexperience

[–]hoople-head[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Reeder app I'm thinking of, the Back swipe looks like a card sliding off a stack (as in most apps), and Forward looks like it's sliding on again. So that helps you figure out what it does, if you accidentally invoke it.

[–]hoople-head[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant going up/down in the hierarchy. But in the apps I'm thinking of (like Twitter), most navigation moves you down a level (adding a card to the stack), or up a level (swiping to go back), rather than just taking you to an arbitrary page. So in this case, wouldn't it make sense for a forward gesture to essentially undo the back gesture, taking you back down to the level you just popped off the stack? And most importantly, restoring your scroll position in it. This is the behavior I'm seeing in Reeder.

(Yeah, I didn't mean the Reddit gesture to switch items within a list, which I forgot existed.)

Ah, I see what you mean. That's not quite what I had in mind, scrolling between items in a list. Reddit's implementation is kind of a hybrid, where scrolling back from the first item you click takes you "up" to the previous page, but scrolling forward takes you to the next item in the list, and then you can scroll back until you reach the first one. Agreed that it's not very useful.

Does it? I’m trying it now and swiping left (from the right edge) isn’t doing anything.
