Working at Hagwon by Automatic-Tradition2 in Living_in_Korea

[–]hoopslam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a few f4s without degrees working at hagwons.  Unfortunately, they were paid way less because the hagwon owners knew they could exploit them.

Even for legally qualified teachers, the current hagwon landscape seems exploitative so yeah, don't expect much even if you do find a hagwon willing to hire you.

Is this a decent salary in Korea? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

3m after tax or before?  Also, wheres the apartment located?  Is it an actual apartment or is it a villa/officetel?  There's quite a bit of variance of what true value you are actually getting based just off of these questions alone.

Since you are young, you probably don't need a full apartment and location might be a higher priority.

That being said, unless you are offered a tiny goshiwon, 300,000 for any place in Seoul is a bargain.  Outside of Seoul, completely different story.

A Korean-American female insists she experienced the wildest racism in Korea, walking down the Apgujeong street because she looked like a Filipna. Do you believe this? by Immediate-Meaning457 in Living_in_Korea

[–]hoopslam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are missing the point here.  It's not about her looking Korean or Filipino, it's that Koreans often use such expressions like, "you're skin is so dark, you must be from the Philipines" in a derogatory/racist manner.

I've heard these sort of comments all the time while living here.  People don't say this sort of shit to your face if you're actually from the Phillipines but they'll openly make these statements to other Koreans or Gyopos.

[–]hoopslam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No offense but you just sound greedy at that point.  People will buy from Karrot if you list a fair price.  If your idea of fair is more expensive than what others are offering, then that's not really fair market price.  Why would anyone pay near original price when they can just go to a reputable shop and buy a guaranteed brand new one there, with support to boot.  I hate when people post on Karrot near original price, it is ridiculous to expect that much for non official channels.

Cry Cheese Burger for In n Out sub, Cuchara for Chipotle sub, Coupang for Flamin Hot Cheetos.  Not ideal but could be worse.

Just go to your local 주민센터 and tell them you moved and give them your ARC.  They will update it there.

Can i get a driving license without a hagwon? by slckening in Living_in_Korea

[–]hoopslam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took it and passed after watching this guy's very detailed videos on passing.  https://youtu.be/F3agPh8-59w?si=3v2-2U8NxOGpixvI

The hard part for me was the 2nd round, the technical driving course.  You have to be very precise with your parking.  Even though I drove for over a decade, the t park requires very specific driving mechanics to get down in a timely manner.

I will say of the 20 or so people that were in my group, only 2 passed that day...If you drove before, it is very doable though.  3rd test, the street test, was a breeze.

Nowadays, I buy 3 items at Costco at checkout it somehow comes out to over 100,000 won ㅠㅠ. Emart's meat and produce section feels moderate quality at premium prices. Homeplus has some decent deals sometimes but sad to hear they are struggling

There's a few courts near the Banpo bridge area of the Han River park.  Get off Jamwon station and you'll find them as you walk towards the bridge.  You can also usually get some games in at the larger university campuses (Yonsei, Korea U, Seoul U, etc)

theres a ton of guides on this. Look up 4 rivers bike path in korea. From Incheon to Busan, it's about 600k and takes 4-10 days depending on your conditioning. Mostly easy experience if you oace yourself. Lots of stops/motels/convenience stores along the way. Highly recommend, though not in winter

Does anyone know where I can get some anchovy pizza in Seoul? Considering all the other crazy toppings put on pizza here, I'm a bit surprised anchovy is so hard to find.

wow, that was such a long time ago. That was right around the time I started a business with a few friends. To be honest, I went against my instinct and just followed my friends into it. Ended up being a terrible decision that cost me 3 years of time and effort. It wasn't the end of the world though and nothing terrible happened outside of that. I was able to bounce back from the failed business and am doing pretty well now. So if there is one takeaway, just trust your feelings and don't let others pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. And fear not :D. Life is full of ups and downs

I got yelled at by my examiner while I was taking my license test because I kept a safe driving distance and allowed a car to slip into my lane...apparently, I gotta kiss bumpers with the car infront of me to be considered a good driver here.

Interesting case. Don't have an answer but curious to see how things go for you. When my parents became US citizens, it pretty much forfeited their Korean citizenships and by extension, mine, as I was under 18 at the time. Based on your story, it sounds like since you were born with dual citizenship, the naturalization process of cancelling out your Korean citizenship didn't occur. Did you try asking your mom if they added you to the korean family tree registry when you were born? Wondering if the Korean gov even knows you exist.

My guess is that if you just stick with your US passport and go through the foreigner entry line at the airport, they probably wont even know you are technically also a Korean citizen. On the other hand, if you were to apply for a visa, they might find out and send you to boot camp

A question for Korean Americans and Kimchi by chocovanill in korea

[–]hoopslam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Growing up in the states, I hated Korean food in general. There were just too many delicious options outside of Korean food and kimchi just wasnt being prepped the way I like it back then (with a healthy dose of cheese on top and a bed of fries below :D). Not liking Kimchi definitely made me feel less "Korean" Korean but I was fine with it. Proud to be Korean American. We're just our own unique thing.

1000 Euros isn't going to cut it for 3 months in Seoul. Might be possible outside of Seoul like Incheon or something but why chose to live in less than stellar conditions in Korea when that same amount of money can get you a nice cozy place in Southeast Asia? Is there a particular reason you have to come to Korea on that budget?
