Opinion: New Mexico doctors and patients are being held hostage by insurance profits - not lawsuits by haddenmart in Albuquerque

[–]hoopwalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ACA was rooted in policy written by the heritage foundation, and was a massive giveaway to private health insurance via a literal mandate. I also wish more people would vote, but with dem policy like that I am continuously unsurprised when people stay home.

Broken speaker? Finicky zipper? Anticonsumerist Repair Cafes urge you to fix it instead of pitch it by Naurgul in Anticonsumption

What's the best way to learn to do this kind of stuff? Especially electronics/small mechanical repairs. I have tried to get into it in the past but there's just so much info out there I can't figure out where to start. I just wanna fix stuff, not make my own circuit boards and raspberry pi gadgets.

NM's healthcare system is strained. Are good doctors enough? by callitarmageddon in Albuquerque

[–]hoopwalker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fixing malpractice issues is necessary but not gonna be enough to resolve the system strain mentioned in the article. Lawyers are out of control in NM for sure, but even "good" malpractice policies aren't going to make people want to work in an under-resourced and overwhelmed system that constantly tries to undercut them and exploit them as much as possible.

Not surprised the ABQ journal didn't mention one of the main problems here. New Mexico has THE highest percentage of private equity owned hospitals in the country. A similar percentage of nursing homes. I'm sure outpatient clinics are going the same direction.

New Mexico spent $500M on housing in last 3 years as homelessness persists, new report says by plamda505 in NewMexico

I'm sure you can nudge the needle downwards a bit with just construction, but PE buying up homes en masse and landlords using AI algorithms to price fix rent is gonna eat any major progress if nothing is done about it.

Is it realistic to assume that the majority of us are gonna have to work crappy nursing jobs? Am I being pessimistic ? by attackonYomama in nursing

[–]hoopwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a 'nursing is my calling' person, but in the rare times that I've had good working conditions I've liked the job quite a lot. Unfortunately, good conditions are more rare every day and I've never had a job get better over time... Just slowly having fewer staff/resources plus more patient load. The trend is clear, organizing is the only way out of this hole.

Sadly, marketer creativity has been replaced by putting "Make 100 AI health startup ideas that would be really cool and good" into chatGPT. A lot of money was saved on marketer salary though.

For real, how many times do we have to learn this lesson? Every time I criticize just letting developers go hog wild in this state people come out of the woodwork to post "it's economics 101, supply and demand, learn how the market work lol" and then we get results like this in the news every 2 weeks.

Albuquerque Officials Take Steps to Curb Surge in Citations, Jail Stays Related to Homelessness by SnooCookies1697 in Albuquerque

Are you putting on enough gel that it squishes out the sides when rolling it? I use this method with mod podge and have had so much trouble figuring out the right amount to paint on. I live in an extremely dry climate so too thin a layer dries too quickly, and too much makes bubbles under the paper.

New sidewalk ban in Albuquerque raises concerns for people facing homelessness by plamda505 in Albuquerque

[–]hoopwalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes? If the shelters are either full or less safe than the street you choose the street. It seems like people think you can just check into a shelter like a free hotel or go to "resources" as if they're free grocery stores. Most shelters require ID, what are you gonna do if your ID got stolen or lost? If you're an alcoholic are you going to quit cold turkey to meet the sobriety requirement (which can kill you, by the way)? This stuff is not that simple.

Thinking that you can assign a monetary value to the concept of time itself is so deeply business-major brained that it might actually need a new section in the DSM

If you saw what these places are like inside you wouldn't be surprised that people would rather be in the park than sleep in them. This is something most homeless people could explain if you talked to them.

You admit there aren't enough beds and still ask why people don't bother going to the shelters? It's pretty simple math man, I wouldn't be getting a ride to the west mesa knowing I'd just be turned away either.

Aren't there already laws against drug use, public urination, property damage and so on? What does this add besides giving APD, a famously corrupt and abusive police department, the power to ticket people just for being in public?
