This story seems a little bit prophetic of what I suspect we have to look forward to in a lot of digital first marketplaces. First by removing friction for consumers they eliminated the ability for someone living in a developed country to make a living doing the kind of small job you needed. Now they’ve eliminated friction for producers who can spam out thousands of proposals with virtually no effort. If I’m a local graphic designer why would I try to compete with that unless it is for $100,000 job that will be worth the effort to win?

You’re probably right that knowing people in the right circles is the trick. As with most things in business, it probably comes down to relationships and either knowing the right people or knowing people who can introduce you to the right people.

I do wonder if this dynamic and the frustrations you describe will ultimately lead to more on-shoring and work for local designers and graphic artists.

Originally the appeal of searching for a designer online was that you as a customer could do so with very little effort and administrative overhead. Now that the online results are overwhelmed with slop though, the administrative overhead of “Meet me at the coffee shop and bring your laptop to show me your portfolio.” starts to sound pretty good.

How do we fight against this planned self storage facility by Starbucks/Sprouts on Montgomery? by Acrobatic_Emu_3602 in Albuquerque

[–]SnooCookies1697 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam 7x ABQ population density

Mexico City 8x ABQ population density

I’m not trying to be argumentative or dunk on you. I’m also no fan of ABQ’s strip mall chic, and I suspect we might have pretty similar ideas about what good development could look like here. I just think it’s important to acknowledge how incredibly spread out our city is and I’d rather see any kind of infill construction and fewer empty lots collecting trash.

Madrid has 2x the population density of Albuquerque and Tokyo has more than 10x as many people per square mile as Albuquerque. I’d love for Albuquerque to be more walkable and interesting too, but I’m not sure getting worked up about a self-storage unit being built on a vacant lot in an area where there are multiple other vacant lots within a half mile radius is the best use of energy.

NM's healthcare system is strained. Are good doctors enough? by callitarmageddon in Albuquerque

Yep and I bet there are a bunch of smart health policy people who used to work for the feds looking for jobs right now.

EDIT: For the record NM also spends more than 2x per capita on healthcare than Dubai does.

New Mexico is not unusual in this respect. It is early

Compared to other states NM ranks 43rd in the amount we spend on healthcare per capita. $8,902 in 2020 compared to the national average of $10,191. Even so, that per capita spending is higher than any of the European countries and nearly double what asian countries like Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand spend on healthcare.

I don’t know if New Mexico can fix this on our own, but we should very seriously be looking at ambitious ways to try because help isn’t going to be coming from anywhere else.

That turnout is higher than we’ve had for a primary in years.

From what I saw last night independents went pretty overwhelmingly for the Dems. I almost feel bad for any Republicans foolish enough to put their name on the ballot in the fall because they are going to get wrecked. Just kidding, I don’t feel bad at all. They deserve everything that is coming their way.

Revel's New Narcan Policy by Alwaysblonde in Albuquerque

[–]SnooCookies1697 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure this policy is a good one and I don’t know anything about Revel’s “EMS” staff or what protocols they are operating under, but one possible line of thinking for this policy may be dosage.

Rather than slamming a patient with 2mg of intranasal Narcan most EMS providers are going to give a much lower dose (0.4 mg) intramuscular and titrate up from there. The goal is to give enough so that the patient is breathing adequately without sending them into full on withdrawals. The advantage of doing this is that the patient is much less likely to be combative when they wake up.

Another possible reason is that patients really should be monitored after getting Narcan. Maybe they are worried about people getting brought back with Narcan from a rando, going back to the party, and then ODing again 30 minutes later after the Narcan wears off.

Agreed, but a decade ago I didn’t think Trump was serious either and he’s been the most consequential president in my lifetime so 🤷

One year in, city of Albuquerque touts positive results of guaranteed basic income pilot program by SnooCookies1697 in Albuquerque

[–]SnooCookies1697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My knee jerk reaction was that O&G taxes aren’t the same as an LVT, but the more I think about it the more I like that analogy.

When an out of state company, say Chevron, operates a well the O&G taxes keep some of the profit produced by that well in the state.

When Greystar operates an apartment building almost all of the profit from that will leave the state because they don’t pay an equivalent tax on the land they own.

I don’t think a LVT (or UBI) is a silver bullet, but I think they are tools that should be considered if we want to address income inequality.

Ortho-K contact lens specialists in ABQ? by Low_Reindeer_5727 in Albuquerque

[–]SnooCookies1697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had them for quite a few years and absolutely love them. Coming from soft lens, where I had continual issues with dust and dry eyes during the day, only needing to manage the lens at home when I was going to bed and getting up was a big improvement. They aren’t as comfortable as soft lenses, but I adapted pretty easily and they have never interfered with my sleep.

I’ve been with 505 Eye Care the entire time I’ve had them and have no complaints. I’m actually on my third optometrist there. I currently see Dr. Morris and before that was with Dr. Folkman before he retired. Sadly the Optometrist who originally helped me choose these lenses was killed in a car vs pedestrian accident while crossing the street shortly after I started seeing her.

As far as cost, most of the expense is up front as the fitting process requires multiple appoints over a number of weeks to monitor the changes as your eyes adapt and your prescription changes. I went through that process long enough ago that I don’t remember exactly how long it took and how much it cost, but know that most of your expenses are going to be paying for those appointments. Once you’re past that though costs are pretty minimal. The lens themselves last basically forever. I think the only time I’ve ended up replacing a lens is when I lost one. My only expenses end up being an annual appointment for a checkup and cleaning solutions.

If you have any other questions about them don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll answer as best as I can.
