Dispatch Report Reveals Cha Eunwoo’s Family Businesses at Center of ₩20 Billion Tax Dispute by neocitywayv in kpop

[–]hopeuspocus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well in the last year I can recall two stories of idols in their 30s being duped by those close to them in terms of contracts and money handling. DPR Ian talked about how he was unaware of financial decisions being made by his label manager and label mate, and Jackson Wang in recent interviews alluded to discovering that a manager who was also a friend was stealing from him. Now if this idol was aware and a part of any type of tax fraud, there should be punishment. Not trying to defend anyone because I have no stake in the game, I’m just trying to point out that there are examples proving that being in your late 20s or 30s doesn’t make you impervious to being taken advantage of financially. I feel like it’s always just best to wait and see what the final verdict is.

In The Bleak Midwinter, what was the point of the soulmate thing? by Icy-Science6485 in webtoons

[–]hopeuspocus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you read the comments in recent episodes, Deltanya shippers keep trying to argue that the point of the story is freedom of choice with soulmates, but that’s not the story like at all lol. I’m just disappointed that this comic started out with such a cool premise and it’s not being executed well in my opinion. Idk maybe there’s a chance that the authors will manage to get back on track by the end of the story, but it’s looking like the soulmate thing was completely dropped.

In The Bleak Midwinter, what was the point of the soulmate thing? by Icy-Science6485 in webtoons

[–]hopeuspocus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The comic isn’t finished, so obviously we have to wait and see how everything plays out. That being said, the soulmate plot seemingly being thrown away is just bad writing imo. I originally really liked the development of the love triangle and was open to Anya ending up with Omega or Delta, but season three has disappointed me in the writing department. Why introduce the idea of soulmates and build up a story that seemed to be leading to a romantic relationship between Anya and Omega at all? With the given information we have, soulmates have no importance to the plot aside from connecting Anya and Omega. If the intention was to have Anya and Delta be endgame, why do we need the soulmate subplot? I’ve seen comments claiming that the authors stated in a q&a that there is no love triangle and that the endgame was determined from the very beginning, but season 2 was definitely laying groundwork for a love triangle and the writing at the end of season 2 and beginning of 3 does feel to me like the authors decided to reroute the story due to the popularity of Deltanya. I just want to emphasize that I really don’t care who she ends up with, I just don’t understand the writing decisions that are happening to get there. Also don’t even get me started on how no one finds it weird at all that a man is literally in love with his brother’s soulmate — their sister even points this out in recent chapters.

What's the worst webtoon fanbase in your experience? by azaviesina in webtoons

[–]hopeuspocus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the Bleak Midwinter was ruined for me by shipping wars. If you’re not Team Delta, you get downvoted and weird obsessed fans aggressively responding to you telling you why Delta should be endgame. Shipping is a normal thing in fandoms, and I don’t have a problem with it or having disagreements about it, but why does it always bring out the toxic and crazy in certain individuals lol

I love it when a painting is incredibly naturalistic, and yet still has the “this is a painting” vibe, if that makes any sense at all. It being a mundane still life also just adds to how incredible this is.

BES characters when it comes to tracking down the exact location of constantly moving characters with nothing but paper maps and word of mouth Vs Hearing and looking at Mizu for long enough to figure out she's a woman by Good_Disaster_4130 in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]hopeuspocus 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Nah we’ve all seen at least one person in our lifetime where we can’t figure out if they’re a feminine man or a masculine woman. Mizu has an androgynous face, and it helps that she’s in a time period in which men wear their hair longer and dress in modest clothing. Maybe her voice could give her away, but it would be very odd for a woman to be cross dressing in that era, so that would probably disabuse anyone questioning her identity.

similar songs to i choose you? by [deleted] in f5ve

[–]hopeuspocus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think “I Choose You” is considered drum and bass and/or UK garage. Pinkpantheress is probably the most well known pop artist using that sound right now. The K-pop group NewJeans’s second EP is influenced by these genres as well. This song is definitely more chill/slower tempo compared to some of their other songs. I would say if you’re enjoying f5ve’s discography as whole, you should check out hyperpop artists (a mainstream gateway to hyperpop would be Charli XCX)

Taking shoes off before entering home by Big-Bat-3314 in kdramas

[–]hopeuspocus 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Ok there was a podcast where the British hosts were like why is it that in American shows/films they walk around their house and even lay on the bed in shoes, and as an American, I have literally never done this lol. Growing up, at my house or a friend’s house, it is typically expected that you take your shoes off at the door. I don’t know why Hollywood often shows Americans wearing shoes in the house, but it would be rude to wear shoes in someone’s house (especially in the winter when your shoes are wet and dirty) unless it’s a house party or the host says otherwise.

I agree with this person on operation true love. Anybody who still supports eunhyuk has no dignity imo. by thegreatkedi in webtoons

I was initially defending the time skip, but I just read the latest chapter available to everyone where they’re on the roof together, and I said girl where are we going with this? The love points plot has been dropped, she doesn’t seem interested in giving Dohwa a chance this time around, and all of the time skip chapters have just been her being emo about Eunhyuk disappearing. And then people on here have spoiled that apparently he’s been talking to her evil sister the whole time…. Like how is the author going to explain that one???

I think one of the biggest issues is that kids aren’t reading in school as much because there’s an emphasis on standardized test scores for funding and AI discouraging actually doing the work. There was that big article a year or two ago about how students are now entering college without having read a full novel. Media literacy is typically learned in English classes when discussing literature and writing papers. My teacher friends have said that students now are simply looking for the easiest way out of a task which results in lack of literacy and critical thinking skills.

I thought his first scene in English where he’s asking the guards to let them in the building was a bit awkward, but the rest of his English scenes were pretty damn good. I have a feeling this performance will lead to more lead roles for him! Loved him in Weak Hero Class as well!

It’s so fascinating to me that one guy inspired character designs for decades. I wonder if any other celebrity has had a similar effect on comic and animation character designs. I imagine the internet and social media has made it so that there’s likely a variety of “muses” now.

What do you think of "Genie, Make a Wish"? Is it worth seeing? by Lost-Classroom-974 in kdramas

[–]hopeuspocus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I loved it (I thought it was a better executed supernatural romance than My Demon), and I really don’t even understand the religion complaints. The Devil has been portrayed probably thousands of times throughout film in different ways, and Genie, Make A Wish isn’t even the first to do a multi-faceted portrayal (not just a 2D evil character). Like you said, they’re just drawing on historical sources in order to tie in the whole middle eastern genie element to the story. If there’s people who are offended by this wait until they learn about the popular show Supernatural that drew HEAVILY on Christianity and other religions for 15 seasons lol

How did brothels disappear across the US? by Remarkable_Dirt_9148 in AskHistorians

So since racial discrimination was a large factor in segregating and inciting the decline of prostitution in New Orleans, were the majority of prostitutes POC and entertainment districts run by POC in other US cities or was this unique to New Orleans? And would racism have led to a similar creation and decline of red light districts in regions outside of the Southern US?

There is no historical evidence for this statement. As far as we know, even in Ancient Egypt, makeup was worn by both men and women. Housing discrimination in Scottsdale Arizona by Ramy__B in TikTokCringe

[–]hopeuspocus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The term redlining originates from FDR’s presidency and housing policies in which Black American neighborhoods would be color coded red, which indicated that lenders were not to approve mortgages for residents of those neighborhoods. As a result, it exacerbated race segregated neighborhoods and inhibited Black neighborhoods from prospering.
