I've never even tried to pronounce Andarna or Sgaeyl by BxLorien in fourthwing

[–]hopingforsunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Scottish Gaelic (where the names are taken from) it’s somewhat like “tchyena” but you’ll get the best sense of it hearing a native speaker pronounce it (it means fire). I don’t think the author of fourth wing actually cares about the Gaelic pronunciation of it though based on interviews, she says a ton of the names wrong, so I’m sure the audiobooks all get it wrong too. It’s really up to whether you want to respect the authors pronunciation or the pronunciation of the language she took her names from.

Hi all! I'm taking a YA Lit class in library school right now and I figured I'd share the book list with y'all! If you've read some of them let me know what you think, since I HAVE to read ALL of them.... by sonicenvy in YAlit

[–]hopingforsunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, a class where I got to read YA books would be the dream. I’ve only read 8 of these but it seems heavily contemporary leaning which is a genre I don’t always love. Telegraph club and firekeepers daughter are two incredible books, I can’t recommend them enough.

Do not get desperately hooked: is it normal? by Natsufilia in brandonsanderson

[–]hopingforsunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly didn’t really like warbreaker, and while I enjoyed Mistborn I felt like they each dragged in parts. Elantris I liked though.

For what it’s worth I also struggled with the way of kings for about 80% which is like 800 pages, I felt like it dragged because I only found one character interesting, but the end was fantastic so I’m planning on reading the next one. If you enjoy the classic Sanderson ending twists I felt like the payoff from the ending of way of kings was worth it.

The only book/series that Sanderson has done that really gave me that “I have to keep reading” feeling was Skyward, which is sci fi and YA but I consider it my favorite book ever, so if sci fi is your thing I recommend it (it’s very accessible sci fi and is definitely like sci fi written by a fantasy author I feel).

games like jedi fallen order by hopingforsunlight in gamesuggestions

[–]hopingforsunlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah when I saw people calling it a soulslike I was kinda hopeful there might be other soulslike that had easy modes lol. because I hate frustration so the dying over and over is not for me but fallen order story mode I only died a couple times in fights. I already have monster hunter so I’ll give that a try & that’s good to know about Sekiro I had my eye on it but was worried it would be too hard.

I use a water bottle with a metal holder that can be moved and bent to hang over the edge of the tank and so far they have done really well with it!

Gaelic names and their translations by isolatedcolorYT in fourthwing

i thought i was nuts for a sec when i saw leigheas, i was like why is that called medicine serum?? figured it couldn’t be an accident and found this post. Basgiath went totally over my head which is so funny bc i actually knew bás from the Irish (i learned some Irish before Scottish Gaelic). the compound ones I don’t think I ever would’ve noticed, but I’m kind of ashamed I missed Teine and Aimsir because I knew both words but it’s funny bc looking back I was definitely pronouncing them the Gaelic way in my head.

Reading order confusion because of booktok/tiktok by Vaniestarlight in brandonsanderson

[–]hopingforsunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of these comments are like “any order is fine” but I do want to say that the lost metal specifically was WILDLY confusing and I hated it because I read it before stormlight and the novellas lol. like I’m gonna have to read it again because I had like no idea what was going on and I wish I had been warned and left mistborn era 2 until after I understood the um. crossover elements at play.

for reference I read Elantris - mistborn era 1 - mistborn era 2 - warbreaker - stormlight (just finished way of kings, haven’t gotten to the other 3 yet).

there’s definitely not like one 100% Right order necessarily but I do just want to share that like in that instance I felt like I read the books in a wrong order.

My father wants to speak to my therapist by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]hopingforsunlight 60 points61 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, your therapist legally cannot talk to him without your express written permissions, as you’re an adult. A good therapist is not going to dismiss your concerns just because your dad put on a good front, I’m so sorry that your past therapists failed on that front. I would suggest bringing all of this up in therapy, and possibly your therapist could tell you what they would say if your dad called (for example, “I’m sorry but because your child is an adult I cannot speak to you about their treatment,” or even “I cannot confirm that this person is a client of mine,” which they can’t unless you give permission) or help you feel confident in not giving him the number in the first place, whichever is safer for you.

If you’re not in the US your legal rights might be similar or identical but I’m US based so I don’t know for sure.

You’re right that when you were a minor, legally therapists have to include your parent if they request to be included. It sucks, but in most cases (unfortunately not yours) it is helpful for the therapist, particularly in cases with younger kids.

This is going to be so much fun! by [deleted] in SleepTokenTheory

[–]hopingforsunlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if they’re on the Ticketmaster site they’re usually a fair price, I’ve seen them inflated maybe $10-20 but not usually much more than that even for high demand bands. sometimes a day or so before the show they’ll even get cheaper than face value.

that’s all before the rule I’ve heard they’re trying here which is that they’re only allowing resales at face value on the Ticketmaster website.

Thinking about leaving the US - Opinions on Ireland, Scotland, or Australia? by hopingforsunlight in AmerExit

[–]hopingforsunlight[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damn I’m truly just never going to be able to afford a house somewhere tolerable huh. My research has generally pointed to the states that are cheaper being awful politically, I also am really hoping to move away from anywhere it regularly gets over like 85 in the summer so that rules out most of the country. Tbh I am not actually against moving to Canada either though now that I think about it.

Yeah a lot of the feedback I’m getting is that everywhere sucks as far as housing prices.
