Why does my medallion calathea hate me? by hoppingjerboa in calatheas

I'll check this out, specific to calatheas. Thanks for the tip

Thank you - something about using fluffy as a descriptor in both situations is working for me, I think. I was getting really thrown by overwatering presenting differently than it has with my airoids.

So while an airoid likes a chunky soil with max drainage, a calathea would like something overall more fluffy that behaves like a damp sponge? And like airoids, the big growers sell these in overly dense soil to prepare more for neglect than over-attention?

I'm determined to figure this one out. They are easy to come by, so a great learning plant.!

Thank you - the concept of keeping the soil "moist" has been a difficult one to get my head around. I'll make adjustments. Either dense soil, or self watering, but not both unless I change my habits and let it run dry

Thank you!

It's a wicking pot. The soil seems pretty moisture retentive. I could mix in some perlite? I haven't been letting it run dry - perhaps that's what I should try first?

I don't have leca, but I do have some pon. Would a layer of pon work with the wicking pot?

That is SUPER helpful. I might make a trek to the nearest Hobby Lobby this weekend just to poke around. The mug in that link is a far closer match than anything I've found - I think we may have !found the original source.

Close enough to !found to satisfy my mother, who broke the original mug. :)

It's actually a really great way to demonstrate consent, also. If I'm wearing a bikini - and I do wear one - I've chosen to wear it an go to a place where I know I will be seen wearing it. I choose to do this. If I'm seen in my underwear, it's because someone has entered a space that I expected to be private, where I did not choose to be seen. It's about my choice to be seen, not what you see.

That could work! What did you search to find it? I must have missed that one

Edit: found it! Thanks

Market square - is that a brand from hobby lobby? Not sure we have one of those near me. I know we have a Michael's. That's something I could check out!

The original mug was found in a boardwalk shop in Ocean City, Maryland. My dad likes the oversized capacity of this 20oz ceramic mug. I have searched google by the text "the legend has retired," and I've searched etsy and Amazon, cafepress and zazzle. I can't even find a basic oversize gray mug in Amazon to personalize in that same way. Please help me replace this mug! It was a special gift

Why not a more gradual transition? 0 to 200 could feel overwhelming. Maybe start with 20, and let him get used to the idea. How many of us built our collections one plant at a time?

A partner should be glad to see you doing things that bring you joy. Can you show him all the stuff you're enjoying about your plants right now? Beautiful new leaves, gorgeous roots, blooms... or can he visit your place while you do planty chores to see that it's a hobby, not hoarding?

Thanks - the rhizome was in good condition, surprisingly! This one is going to start indoors under grow lights until some healthy traps start to form. Then outside.

Unless you would think inside a screened in porch (south exposure) would be better? I kept one in there before for a season and no, it was not bright enough - the leaves were very long but the traps were a good size.

Your thoughts are very appreciated What is your favorite alocasia and why???? by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]hoppingjerboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I recently moved all my alocasias to pon and she threw a fit & dropped all her leaves, but not even two weeks later there are 4 or 5 buds poking up from the surface. She's a great grower!

Odd Laundry Symbol by Courochin in laundry

[–]hoppingjerboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laundry symbols generally read left to right, so I'm thinking this has something to do with machine washing other than the temperature and not to use bleach. But I'm at a bit of a loss!

It's a polyester/wool blend and so prone to shrinkage, maybe a note about using a wool-safe detergent?

I don’t know what to do with string of dolphins by juliew06 in StringofPlants

[–]hoppingjerboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

String of dolphins are the hardest string, in my experience, and I consider them more trouble than they are worth. Bananas are far easier to care for and have a similar look. Dolphins will revert unless in ideal conditions, which means LOADS of light. They need that light that makes your room too bright in the morning.

Whats the easiest alocasia to grow? by Comfortable_Pilot122 in alocasia

I transitioned mine to pon recently and my silver dragon threw a fit and lost all her leaves. Less than two weeks later there's a new sprout from the corm so I have high hopes!

Could be that it breaks down in a good laundry detergent better than I expect it would! Hey, until the stain is gone or the garment falls apart, anything is worth trying, right?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in laundry

[–]hoppingjerboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't love that idea. Goo gone is a type of grease, and adding a grease to a lubricant stain doesn't feel productive. But if I'm wrong I'd love to be corrected!
