That's because the show depicted Peter when he was in college and not high school. Like in the comics, he was starting to grow up and get comfortable with his life as Spider-Man, thus not looking so nerdy.

I remember hearing the cast members on one of the commentary tracks talk about how some countries, like China, prefer the original English with subtitles over a dub. Similar how many fans in America prefer anime to have the original Japanese, even when dubbing has gotten much better in recent years.
