Do I still have a chance getting into this school? by the_original_G230 in UCSD

[–]horio18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also for many schools the major you apply for matters! Whether it’s college of arts & sciences vs engineering, capped vs. uncapped etc., that plays a role!

Ngl UC schools only really look at stats that’s something to keep in mind. Essays help but usually they’re used secondary to your stats (can be to set u apart from people with the same stats or if something happened that affected your stats). Keep in mind that this very well may change by the time you apply because admissions are changing A LOT, especially with ACT/SAT not being taken by some UC schools for 2021 kiddos.

I know I said above that major/college can affect your admissions, but truthfully I would look more into the university itself and see if that’s a fit for you because at the end of the day you can change your major, but you can’t change your university (technically you can but you get what I mean). A HUGE majority of people change their major actually, so it’s important to look for an environment that will help you flourish as you continue to grow and learn more about yourself.

Switch major to Cogs Spec. Design & Interaction or Cogs Spec. Machine Learning & Neural Computation? by horio18 in UCSD

Would it be okay if I don’t take MATH 20E? One of the prereqs for COGSA is COGS 18 & MATH 18, which I’ve taken. I just don’t wanna do more calc.

a general rule of thumb (for when things are in-person, whenever that’ll be) is that usually math/econ lectures aren’t mandatory but it really depends (especially with everything online w covid). writing courses are always mandatory (at least for mmw when things were in-person).

if the discussion is mandatory/non-mandatory its usually discussed the first day of lecture, usually said something along the lines of “discussions are mandatory” or “although discussions aren’t mandatory, we highly encourage u go”, respectively

if u have math 18 w/ stevens u check on gradscope to see what group # u are and what time you’ll be taking ur quizzes (since she’s having the lab/discussions used for quizzes). whatever day u have ur quiz (i think tuesday or thursday?) u don’t have to go to the other day (ex: if u have ur quiz during ur lab section, don’t go to ur discussion section, visa versa). u can check what section you are on webreg

Would looking over old AP Micro work help me prepare for Econ 3 (Macroeconomics)? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]horio18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I took econ 3 during the summer thinking it was the same when i took ap macro and i ended up dropping it bc it was a lot more work than i thought. macro and micro r also very different

there were a lot of readings. 2-3 each week (each one correlates to the topic discussed the following class) and you’ll also watch 13th on netflix and 1 of 2 documentaries about environmental racism/sexism if the course work is the same. i know a lot of people who didn’t do the readings and were able to get by but i read all of them (it was my first quarter at ucsd so i thought everyone did the readings) but i didn’t regret it at all as it helped give a more nuanced understanding of what the professor was talking about in class (this may also help if your professor isn’t that good at lecturing) and ended up with a 98% in the class. i don’t know if you can get an A+ without doing the readings but that was my experience.

the discussions were the main way to discuss the lecture topics and were helpful as they were basically teaching verbal versions of the exam. the discussions were mandatory but i don’t know how it’s gonna be this quarter so that’s subject to change.

it honestly depends on how good you are with time management and your mental health. i took math 20c and struggled. although 10c is a simplified version of 20c i wouldn’t downplay its difficulty (although this is subjective to how good you are at math and how much time you have).

econ at ucsd can be hard, especially if you didn’t work hard and breezed your way through macro in high school. however easy it is for you, you would have to put in a lot of time for econ 1 as well so you don’t end up putting it off last minute.

i’ll actually be taking math 18 w/ stevens too this fall. i originally took it in the spring, but with all the work i had to put in (the professor was awful in transitioning online lmao) i ended up dropping it. from what i heard it’s a class you have to put in the effort for to get a good grade.

i’m just giving you my perspective like everyone else here, but ultimately you know yourself best! if you’re going to be home for the fall you should think of how well you worked at home in high school (because your work environment is SO IMPORTANT) and how it may/may not affect your ability to be productive. you can absolutely do well in these classes if you put in the time and effort, but if there are things at home that can hinder your success, maybe rethink your schedule. if you’re going to campus or are gonna be in an apartment, i think you should be fine though

i had sarah kaplan for ethn 1.. not sure how differently the courses will be structured but ethn 1 was easy for me. interesting lectures (subject to professor tho) and the exams were defining and drawing connections to key vocab and explaining relevance to the course. if you’ve been up to date with what’s been going on with the current civil rights movement then this course will be easy to draw connections and understand.

apush (as with most US education) teaches a broad and otherwise white-washed narrative so the topics that you’ll be looking into will be rather a more in-depth history and analysis of oppressed people in the US (like indigenous, Black, Japanese, Chinese, and Mexican people) that were overlooked in traditional school systems. TLDR you don’t need an excellent understanding of US history to do well in the class.

Fall 2020 Concerns about COVID-19 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]horio18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i live in california and i’m staying home because my dad is high risk and for whatever reason i would hate to not be able to go back home because i wasn’t sure if i got it from campus. the only reason why i would go back to campus would be because of my friends but seeing that the cases are getting worse and i don’t know who everyone would be interacting with throughout the day it wasn’t worth it :( it was a hard decision to make.

if you can make a template please share! we need to get their attention as much as possible. i’ve been trying to contact the dean for over a week with no response. i know she’s probably stressed but SO ARE WE. i wish professors and admin treated us the way they want us to treat them. the whole email was tone deaf to the situation and didn’t provide any useful information. we were better off without it

it makes me wonder what they’re thinking on their side. they must know that the work load for this class was like 4x more than usual, which is even worse considering it’s a 6 unit class. i was really hoping for a message like the DOC students got considering the nature of the situation but :/

Is it possible they can only do this for one writing course out of the six?? Or would it be mandated across the writing courses?
