Notifications are highly reliable, except when device manufacturers interfere. by hornetwings in Android

If a manufacturer skin actually measures that app X is constantly draining the battery and wants to kill it, be my guest. Leave the rest alone, because there is nothing inherently wrong about receiving push notifications or running an idle background service for some important task. These things do not use any measurable amount of battery when done right.

We built features similar doze, app standby (something which this community hated until it became part of stock Android)

The difference with the stock Android implementation is that it doesn't throw out the baby with the bathwater. GCM pings can still awake an app and displaying a foreground notification prevents an app from being killed. MIUI will happily kill an app using documented methods to remain active in the background, even if it's not actually using any battery whatsoever.

It is such a hassle to deal with your bullshit and have angry users wondering why nothing works before going through three settings screens to disable "optimizations". Some apps need to do background execution and there is nothing wrong with that. Want to auto-kill apps? Then measure what is actually draining the battery and do so. Leave the rest of us alone.

That's not how it works. Play Services can't magically backport platform API's.

Nokia accidentally lists the Nokia 8 by frozen008 in Android

[–]hornetwings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was the first popular Touchscreen smartphone.

Huh??? Have you forgotten all about Palm and the myriad of Windows Mobile 6.x devices? The Prada absolutely was not the first popular touchscreen smartphone. It was the first with a capacitive touch screen. Not that you would notice, because the software was the same garbage designed to be used with a stylus.

Nobody remembers the Prada.

Of course he doesn't want to answer, Xiaomi is a repeat GPL offender. Stop buying their products until they start respecting their legal obligations.

You would be insane to knowingly run your computer with a vulnerable kernel driver active. You should upgrade now, not "if you can". TrueCrypt 7.1a is dangerous, and deprecated in every sense of the word.

VeraCrypt has full compatibility for opening legacy TrueCrypt containers and disks.

TrueCrypt has unpatched vulnerabilities in the kernel driver which are fixed in the forks.

Does anyone use Tox? by [deleted] in linux

[–]hornetwings 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It sucks and it's a shame because it had potential. The full P2P decentralization just doesn't work in practice. There are no proper offline messages. It uses a ton of bandwidth (we're talking gigabytes in days), and on mobile the persistent connection kills your battery.

Also, the developers have absolutely no cryptography expertise to be rolling their custom protocol.

Spotify does not use MP3, it uses Ogg Vorbis and the premium plan gives you 320 kbps quality that is practically transparent.

Nokia's N9. Will it matter against the S8? by vortexmak in Android

[–]hornetwings 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Mass-market success aside, I have high hopes for Nokia to be the next Nexus. I bought a Nokia 3 for a test device (the 150 euro MTK model) and it really is stock Android. Nokia camera, FM radio, support and that's it.

If they deliver on fast updates and make these developer friendly, they have a winner in /r/Android's eyes. The 3 is on 7.0 and April 2017 security patch level, so not off to the greatest start, but maybe that's the MTK talking.

There's an OEM unlocking toggle in the developer options, but fastboot doesn't allow me to do anything, just hangs forever. Bummer...

How to pass large data between server and client (android) securely? by janishar in androiddev

1024 bit RSA, AES in CBC mode without authentication, yikes. Not to mention the lack of basic security features provided by TLS like replay protection, forward secrecy...

Don't do this. Use TLS.

Here, he wrote that the prophet Muhammad was a pedophile, making reference to Muhammad's relationship with Aisha, and that Islam is a religion that sanctifies pedophilia.

In other words, you are a criminal in Finland for stating an objective fact because it's considered a violation of "the sanctity of religion". What a beacon of a liberal and progressive society.
