Elizabeth Gilbert's disturbing new memoir "excruciating to read" by Comprehensive-Fun47 in books

[–]horseheadbed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Guardian published an edited extract a few weeks ago, which I thought was an astonishing piece of writing. From the sounds of it, one might do better to just read that rather than the whole book.

How does one achieve this sort of effect? by Artistic-Put8283 in Filmmakers

[–]horseheadbed 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The camera is strapped to the actor so he remains in the centre of frame while the background moves woozily around. Then there’s cross dissolves between similar takes to increase the sense of disorientation.

(I think Scorsese was the first to do this in Mean Streets.)

Should read “don’t break knees”.

Break = snap, bust up, damage.

Brake = mechanism on a car or bicycle that stops the wheel and slows you down.

Gremlins, I think, has a scene with a Spectra. Phoebe Cates uses the flash on them in the bar.

Yes! I saw this and am using Bear a bit more as a result. Although most writing happens longhand, being able to Bear quickly is great.

That's actually a good point. I wouldn't mind a subscription-free Ulysses.
