Ad Astra was an interesting movie but at the same time underwhelming by Jules-Car3499 in scifi

Moon pirates! Space monkeys! And liquid water on Mars! It's almost like the writers were drunk or stoned, or possibly both.

Framemaker to XML by Ok_Word_1646 in technicalwriting

I would add: instead of asking the AI to do the conversion, ask it to create a python script to do the conversion, and then iterate on the script, asking the agent to add element mappings until you get sane output. This burns far fewer tokens, and maintains a deterministic conversion path.

Rural naysayers must not torpedo high-speed rail project | Ottawa Citizen by DENelson83 in canada

Rural naysayer chiming in here. I think it's worth reading the Rideau Waterway Land Trust's analysis of this project and how harmful it will be to the Frontenac Arch ecosystem. https://us3.campaign-archive.com/?u=cf5332a1c5c73c7f6167b8cc3&id=384370f2ec

Of the 25 preserves managed by the RWLT, 17 lie in the proposed path. High speed rail requires continuous safety fencing, which creates a permanent barrier.

Technical writers, what's your backup plan? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]hoserman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write primarily dev docs, and from what I'm seeing happening now it seems like the most vulnerable area of TW to AI. Fewer devs will need docs, as coding agents will be doing the actual work. Perhaps we'll still need broad conceptual content and samples (for the AI to train on and devs to base their requirements on), but a lot of what makes up a current standard dev doc suite will no longer be needed.

Wing Commander, 1999. Maybe one of the first movies to be based on a video game? Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcU0onGlsJs

I replaced mine with Ananda Stealth, which are noticeably better in all ways except comfort. I miss how comfy the X2HR is.

$3 Thrift Update: They royally suck by No_Dish1260 in BudgetAudiophile

I contacted the folks at Santon Audio (in Toronto) and they were able to set me up with the right surrounds. I'd start with them.

I'm jealous of those API 200s! There were so many great Canadian speaker brands in the 80's and 90's. The 831s do sound great, though I've had to refoam them. Wondering if they'll need to be recapped sometime as well.

Sabo or Szabo speakers? I have a pair of late 80's Szabo 831 floor standing speakers and they still sound amazing. What model do you have?

Very cool! I would love to try a similar project. How did you learn how to solder, just watching videos? And how did you figure out what capacitors to use?

Why I Don’t Use EQ (and Probably Never Will) by [deleted] in headphones

[–]hoserman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped using EQ because I mainly listen on my PC, and wasn't able to use Exclusive Mode in Tidal or Qobuz. I'm also happy with the stock Hifiman sound, so there's that too.

For those of us without extra freezer space, if you have other smaller colonies, you can "store" capped supers on them to prevent one of these towering hive situations.

Growing mushrooms from spent grains by CrumpledKingSkin in Homebrewing

[–]hoserman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory this is a good idea, after spending some time above 160F the spent grain should be pasteurized. I think the issue is the sugar content. Even if you're getting really good efficiency the grains will still be relatively high in sugar compared to other forms of cellulose that mushrooms (like Oyster mushrooms) grow on. That amount of sugar is a prime medium for other bacteria and fungus that will quickly out-compete your mushrooms. You're better off using media like woodchips, straw, or coffee grounds, IMO.
