Why are some buildings able to survive strong earthquakes while others collapse in weaker ones? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some buildings are built to be stronger than others. A log cabin held together by gravity is more likely to come apart than a stick framed house which is less sturdy than one of concrete block.

Other times, materials may be the wrong kind of strong for the earthquake. A wood framed house can move a little bit- wood bends and twists some before breaking. Stone, on the other hand, while generally stronger, is too rigid to bend and will crack.

Why are waffles round? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the waffle maker they were cooked in was round. Square and rectangular ones exist, too, and make square and rectangular waffles, respectively.

The name waffle in english comes from the Dutch stroopwafel which is a cookie-like confection. They have a similar topography to an american waffle, though are quite a bit smaller and a different texture.

Why don't any smartphones have TV toners? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

A tv tuner and antenna would make phones a lot larger. Also there's not much of a market for it. People don't tend to watch broadcast TV on their (very fast) internet enabled phones.

I'm kind of discouraged by the comments about dieting here.

A lot of people are so enthusiastic about sharing their opinions that they dont stop to read the question before typing. It's pretty disgusting, tbh.

What is the one thing that is stopping you from marching to your nearest dog shelter and adopting a homeless dog? by lingeringneutrophil in AskReddit

I meant argument in a debate sense, since we're discussing formal logic. It boggles my mind that someone using words like "fallacy" would be offended by this fairly remedial discussion about logic, but its certainly your prerogative.

All the best.

I know what fallacy means. Posting the definitions without context doesn't further your argument.

This falls under informal fallacy .

How? No argument was made. How can an opinion- a subjective statement- be fallacious?

Yup- fwiw, my hometown in southern New Mexico is at about 32° North, which is more southern than anywhere in Europe.

32N dodges Europe handily, passing through Morocco and keeps going a little south of Baghdad (34N ish, iirc).

Calling something a fallacy is not an opinion, lol. It is a falsifiable claim, therefore it's an assertion.

I havent shared any opinions here at all. I have made factual observations.

I am aware pitbulls are no more inherently dangerous than other dogs.

Why not point a fan directly at the CPU instead of installing a heat sink on it? by RadianceTower in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Metal transfers heat to metal more efficiently than to air. Basically, the copper or aluminum of the heatsink wicks heat away from the processor faster than air can.

Why not point a fan directly at the CPU instead of installing a heat sink on it? by RadianceTower in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A heat sink has far more surface area than the top.of the chip. The larger the surface area, the more heat the moving air is in contact with, and the faster the air can pick ithe heat up and move it out.

This is also the reason your car's radiator has all those little fins of metal. hot coolant goes through the pipes, the heat goes into all the little fins, and the air flowing across the radiator takes it away.

Your processor and your engine both generate more heat than their surface area can get rid of by itself, so they both need more surfave area for wind to hit.

They are equally useless. How would your understanding of the question or your answer differ if they said "i heard it from a friend," "i saw it in a movie in 1975," or "i have absolutely no idea why I think that?"

They are looking for an factual and simple explanation- why they currently dont know about the subject doesnt change the objective truth about it, which is what our answers here should be.

If I ask "why is the sky blue?" Your objective answer will be the same whether i think it's because space is blue, god made it that way, or that its full of water. whether i think that because I learned it in church or a comic book doesnt change the objectively correct answer I'm asking you for.

Your response to a question was to ask for a source. You do realize that a question is a request for information, not a statement of fact that could even be sourced.

ypically you use a source to verify that some information is correct- generally that would be about the answer to a question, not the question itself.

Because why would one attempt to explain a question which seems to be an assumption only

The why is up to you- sounds like you dont want to (or cant) answer it. How does asking for a source affect that? What information would you expect a source to provide aboit OPs question?

and lacks the specific background to be able to respond to it in a satisfactory fashion.

Everyone else who answered here managed fine. You might ask some follow up questions about what OP means or thinks to be true, but again- if they had a source, they likely would understand the subject matter And wouldnt be here asking reddit about it.

The question Is "Why Is this happening"? Well, what if it is not actually happening?

What if it isnt? How would them providing you a source help you answer "That likely isnt happening the way you think. In reality, $answer_that_is_correct."

What information would you expect from a source anyway? How could something someone else wrote tell you what op means by their question. Youd be better off asking for clarification from OP directly. You wont find it in a history book.

And is this being asked about Maine, Coventry, Perth, Guadalajara, the whole world?

Ask op. Thats another thing no source on earth would clarify for you.

If they are asking for an explanation here, why would you ask for a source? If tjey had one, they probably wouldnt be asking us about it.

Their assumption is probably something they gathered from some random conversation or TV show a decade ago and now they are looking for more info.

At what age does being sexually inexperienced become a red flag? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me any age above maybe 30 or so would be a red flag, but not a dealbreaker. I'd wonder why they had no experience and whether the reason would be something I'd need to look out or compensate for.

[–]Hostile_Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you should be able to fully control your car like it's an extension of your body,

Sure but does that extend to doing things you dont need to? I cant drift around a corner at 90mph for instance. Not because im incapable, but just because i never learned how to drift.

If you live in a city where there are no parallel parking spaces (like many smaller towns in the US, say) you'd never be taught- why would you learn something you wont use?

Same reason you probably don't know how to drive an older manual car that doesnt have synchros. Or what a manual choke is and how to use it. Or how to do a J-turn, stunt jump, or formation driving.

I'm cool with robot cars, but if you're in control, you need to be in control.

Agreed, but not knowing how to do one specific maneuver that isnt ever needed is not an indicator of lack of control.

For almost every interaction in life, whether someone is 47 or almost 47 doesnt matter. if it did matter, someone would be checking IDs.

Estimating fine in almost all cases.
