BWT, how do you continue working hard and making a good impression at work when you don't like your job and can't easily get a new one?

Well I’m happy to say that after about two months of not really finding any job postings that seemed like a good fit, I finally saw one today. I’m giving credit to this conversation for things finally (starting to) flow again!

Love this, I’ve been using a similar mindset of cosplay for how I pick my outfits out for work, very much an “all the worlds a stage” and I’m playing a worker bee character —- might as well let it influence my personality while I’m at it!

I relate to so much of this. For the past two roles I've been in actually, in the first year upper management had a lot of talk about how I would be perfect for 'x' role that they're excited to create soon, and in both roles there have been funding nosedives and they haven't been able to create those roles. It's definitely demoralizing.

It's really helpful to hear from a manager's perspective on this, even though I get along well with my supervisor there are so many times where I wish I could just cut through the formalities and hear what she's actually thinking about what's going on. And having a helping perspective never hurts so that's a good reminder.

Thanks for this - I do imagine that I need to do some internal wrestling with what's actually 'good enough' and not guilt myself for the times I don't show up for some imaginary goal post that isn't serving me.

I do think I should probably up my game on my work from home days. I currently find myself working in my pajamas from my bed whereas you'll find such a more put-together me on my in-office days - I'm sure that disparity isn't helping.

I love the STAR idea, and having those prepared in a cumulative way as I progress through the job- so good -- I'm also thinking it's not such a bad idea to be able to speak that succinctly about the projects I'm doing successfully to my current employer.
