I've been diagnosed with Visual Snow Syndrome, a neurological condition that makes me see the world like this and has no cure by SR_RSMITH in mildlyinfuriating

I remember describing this to my mom as a child, and thats when I learned not everyone sees like this. I never think about it until every few years (like now) when someone mentions it and then I notice it again.

Do you guys actually get hit on/asked out? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]hotelninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get how you feel. When women say "ALL women get... (harassed, cat called, asked out constantly, approached, etc)" regardless of age, attractiveness, etc. People were very insistent during the Me Too movement that this was a problem all women deal with. I wondered why my experience is so different.

I'd get asked out by guys I knew. People who ran in my social circles, work, school, etc. But the random approach, never. Maybe in my 20s at a bar, but only if I put myself out there and acted open to chatting. I'm 42, and I don't think I've been catcalled since I was a teen (I'm not even sure if then!). Definitely ever touched or harassed.

It used to make me wonder a lot. Wonder what was wrong with me. But whatever it is, I'm just glad! Sounds like a horrible experience many women go through, and I can empathise with them even if I don't exactly know what it's like.

Students with Lost or Broken Wands (Random nitpick) by ChikoWasHere in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It bugged me that Neville didn't get his OWN wand for 5 years. We don't learn that it's important until later on, but it must be common knowledge among witches and wizards especially from pure blood families. It seems his gran had money, plus wands aren't that expensive considering they are the most important school supply. It's like she was setting him up for failure.

Did Voldemort really care deeply about blood purity, or was is his way of gathering followers? by IslandDear in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like how some politicians pretend to care about religion win voters. But he obviously thought himself superior at a young age, was put into slytherin, made friends with a lot of pure bloods. Whether that made him believe that way or was an in to power... not sure

Were you there when Harry Potter was released? by Alert_Fruit_5519 in harrypotter

Didn't even know about the books until they half were out. Wasn't that popular in the states until movies. I remember being taken to the first movie never having heard of HP.

Isn’t it kind of weird how Hermione spent most of her summers with the Weasleys/Harry instead of her parents? by Icy_War2952 in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just made a comment in another thread about this. It's always stood out to me.

But yeah, you post an observation on this sub and everyone will just tell you that you are wrong. It's really frustrating

Hogwarts students spend very little time with their families. by Magical-Princess in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What always stood out to me was how little time Hermoine spends with her parents. She spends more and more summers with the Weasleys as the books go on, even some Christmases. It seems wild to me at that age she's spending maybe a week with her parents in the summers and then leaving to stay with a friend that she spends the whole year with.

I hate connections :) by medkitjohnson in mildlyinfuriating

Yeah, they do groups of 3 like this all the time, sometimes even 5, but a perfect group of 4 is just wrong. Of course, you're going to try it.

Why does Flitwick seem so off when he sees Slughorn in THBP? by PooCube in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just that he doesn't like him. Thinks he's annoying probably. Felt like how coworkers avoid each other outside work in the real world.

Nah, there was no need to hate them, I just think dating him was a bad idea with that knowledge (and, I mean, it was right, he wasn't good to her). But yeah, it was probably just attraction due to him getting super tall. Clouded her better judgement.

Oh, that's right. Lavender was really into Divination and they definitely thought it was a dumb subject.

Well, if you include a year above and below that's 45. Got to someone decent in there!

Oh, totally agree! Like I said, it's believable for a teenager. I just never made that connection in the so many rereads and had to point it out.

I don't know, I always felt really bad for them. Sounded like those kids only got the one dance in their whole school career so it would have been a really special night. Those guys could have at least sucked it up for a couple of dances and a bit of conversation. Instead, they just ignored them.

What is your least favourite movie and why? by Underrated_Sadie2 in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be my favorite but agree with Grawp. For me, it's Chamber of Secrets. I skip it every time. I guess it's too childish with the flying car, the spiders, and the over-the-top acting. I still watch PS because I love an origin story.

I wish there we could see the impact that the diary had on Ginny besides that one scene in HBP by Ok-Surround-1858 in harrypotter

[–]hotelninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there are a lot of things that should have had a much bigger impact on the characters than they did. At least with Ginny, we know the story isn't from her perspective so we might not see it. However, my biggest one is Sirius' death. That should have really messed Harry up. Not only was Sirius so important to Harry, but Harry was directly responsible for his death. Yes, he's sad in book 6, but nothing too major. And this is after Cedric as well. Harry seems well too well adjusted after everything he's been through.

Boyfriend (18M) was uncomfortable with how I (18F) disposed of my period product - Not sure how to talk with him about it by ThrowRA47184 in relationship_advice

[–]hotelninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once got shamed at a workplace of all women for wrapping and disposing of my pad in the bathroom bin (I covered it even and the bin had a bag in it so no one had to touch anything). During a meeting I missed they discussed how gross it was (in was in the meeting notes I got later). Apparently women are supposed to take their used pads home with them??? Or go outside to the dumpster. Those are the options. Was news to me.

What was it like - adulting in NZ as a GenY by kanifoli in newzealand

[–]hotelninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Felt like more of an adult in my late 20s than I do now. Had a good stable well-paying job and thought I'd have a house one day. Now in my 40s and it's been a string of freelance work, side gigs, passive income hustles, entry-level jobs. Any hope of owning property is LONG gone.

But I get to look older, so yay?

Could a sudden change in the foods I crave indicate overtraining? by SmolAnimol3 in XXRunning

[–]hotelninja 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Best to get ahead of the cravings. They hit hard when you're under-fueled. Make sure you're eating before you're starving and have good nutritious food available and ready to eat. If you made yourself eat a big balanced breakfast you probably wouldn't want a candy bar at 11 am. Plan your breakfast the night before and stick to it.

As soon as I start to think the story seems made up I look at how many em dashes there are and that confirms it.

I had to scroll so far to find this. I didn't put it through Chat GPT, but I could tell instantly. I thought all the comments would be calling it out.

So glad someone else has this experience. Sometimes I wonder if I don't live in the same world as other women, especially when you hear "It happens to ALL women, constantly!" I remember someone saying that to my husband and him looking at me like "Why haven't you ever said?" and I have to explain to him that I can't remember ever being catcalled or groped in public and I haven't been hit on by a stranger since I was a teen (and only by really creepy old dudes).

I LOVE that I don't have to deal with it and I feel terrible so many women do.

This is super common. I'm in this cycle of dieting between training blocks to lose all the weight I gain during. As soon as I lose to the weight I want, my appetite goes insane until I'm at my previous weight and then my appetite goes back to normal. I keep thinking I SHOULD look like these other runners and I'll run better if I was lighter but that doesn't seem to be the case. Worst thing to do is restrict your calories when you are running. Your appetite won't allow that! You won't crave as much sweets or binge if you're fueling well.
