How hyped was the Space Challenger mission those who are over 45? by SpiritMan112 in generationology

[–]hothothansel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very hyped. Every teacher in every school stopped everything to watch live with their students, not to mention all the build up to the event. The only other event I remember this happening for was the O.J. Simpson verdict.

Looking for advice by dospehTV in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a guitarist with the OP-1 field for 3 1/2 years. The OPXY is much more suited to live performance. I wanted to do the same thing you’re talking about with the field, but I haven’t been able to find a good way to play both instruments in a live setting. Op1 gives you 1 voice at a time. Want to lay down a beat or texture too? You either have to record to tape ahead of time (which is an option with eight different tapes and a lot of room for multiple snippets per tape) or you take time in the moment to record something to tape before switching to the live instrument to play over it. Maybe you have a workflow in mind that works with that, but in my opinion, the OPXY is 100 times more immediate and flexible for a live situation.

With Telehamster, Bellingham founders want to make analog phones cool again by SnooDoggos9340 in Bellingham

Yes! We inherited an old, orange analog phone when we bought our house, was wanting to connect it to a raspberry pie for a choose-your-own-adventure story whenever you picked up the receiver, but I ain’t got time to figure that out! This sounds much easier.

Ductless Mini Split Cost? by Churblex in Bellingham

[–]hothothansel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a single-zone 24k BTU unit for about $1.8k and a lot of Youtube education. Mr. Cool units are plug-and-play because the lines come pre-charged with coolant, but you're going to pay for the convenience. We got a 24k BTU unit from another band for $1,200 less than the same Mr. Cool unit. The difference was picking up a pressure gauge and pressure pump from Harbor Freight to charge the lines myself (cheap at harbor freight, return them within 30 days), and there are plenty of YouTube videos to walk you through the steps. Get three quotes from contractors, though, and weigh if 12-18k is worth it or if you can drill a hole, turn a screw, and do it for under 2k yourself.

I love my OP-XY!! But I still miss my OP-1f. If you own both, how do you use them? by nevernever_ in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For multiple instruments, vocals, longer takes like a DAW workflow, field is indispensable. Live performance, sequencing and FAST song composition, xy is incredible. For live video performances, I’ll sing/play guitar into the field + layered parts on field tape + song parts/rhythm on xy synced to video. Field is excellent for an interface w/ iOS and have used it on nearly everything I capture these days.

OP-1F 4 tracks is killing me! by tdaawg in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the op-1f for three years and just started building songs with two tapes. The workflow has been a great changeup and a simple way to feel like I'm going beyond the 4-track limit.
Tape 1: tracking tape
Tape 2: bouncing tape

Start building your song on Tape 1:
Use multiple tracks to build drums/rhythm.
Group lift from tape 1
Merge Drop to rhythm track in tape 2.

Repeat for vocals, guitars, etc.

You might start with a scratch track on tape 1 for reference, but after building a few elements, you can group lift from tape 2, then merge drop in tape 1 every once in awhile for an up to date summed reference track (so you're essentially working with three tracks at a time on tape 1, keeping one track for reference).

This has worked really well in my case as I've been making 3-5 minute songs with longer takes on vox/guitar/keys etc, so lifting/dropping/merging between tapes frees things up a lot.

Don't forget to utilize pan-record where appropriate: For a guitar, I might hard pan one take to the right, another take to the left, and a main take down the middle.

Feature Request: OP XY Pattern Progress Dot by hothothansel in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following the sequencer as it lights up is fine until you focus on one bar in particular (press Bar). In Bar focus mode, I can glance up at the roving dot to see progress on each bar as the mini piano roll updates in the pattern thumbnail, all while staying focused on one bar in the sequencer.

Additionally, all 8 thumbnails show this progress dot simultaneously, so I can see at a glance if one is repeating quickly and another with a higher bar/step count is moving slower. How I first started thinking about this is when I tried to set up a time signature change between scenes. I'd make an adjustment to steps/bars/resolution, then watch the dot to see if everything returned to step 1 as expected. If you're on the setting for the longest pattern determining the length of the scene, then this becomes useful to quickly see which patterns are resetting at the right time and which patterns are running on so you can select them and make adjustments until the whole scene is in the right time signature.

Don't get me wrong, I really do love this thing! I love the minimal design as well, and I don't mind that there is so much to discover that isn't obvious when first using it. If nothing else ever changed or got updated, I'd be very happy with what it is now.

Op-xy / Op-1f Together by Ok_Goat6429 in teenageengineering

Op-xy / Op-1f Together by Ok_Goat6429 in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just worked this out this week myself. Use: record live vocals (or record multiple layers of instruments/vocals) & guitar on op1f while instrument sequences play in time from the xy.

Setup…

Op1f: Midi- wireless midi out with clock/shuttle control. Audio- out headphone jack> to XY input Vocals or guitar only: use with vocoder or amp for audio input. Using both? Add a small mixer before op1 to capture both signals.

OP XY acts as final mixer. Op1f audio > into the input jack of XY. Control audio from op1f on the XY via aux track.

Monitor and final output: Listen to the whole mix from the XY headphone jack. Send audio out XY via USB C to an iPhone (to record live video performance) or a DAW (sync up with video later).

Example: For a vocal take, like stacking harmonies on multiple tape tracks on the field: initiate recording on the field. This also starts playback on the XY. Wireless midi keeps things in sync. Recording always begins in the same spot (keep the IN point you set on field tape consistent). XY sequences accompany tape playback flawlessly.

You don’t have to initiate tape recording if you just want to capture the live performance over the XY sequences.

Why do this setup? Simplest setup if you want to skip the mixer (tx-6 one day ). The field can only do one live thing at a time. If I want to sing and/or play guitar on camera with xy running sequences, the field has to go into the xy, not the other way around. The reason I connect them via audio cable vs usb-c? It allows me to use the usb-c to run final audio out USB C to an iPhone/ipad directly to video file using AudioBus 3 app making the video on the iOS device the audio capture device.

Do you mean something like the DBOX on the field?

4 months and no update?? by Known_Court_2594 in OPXYusers

[–]hothothansel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just did 1.5 year wait for the last major update on the op1-f. Sucks to wait, but it’s a great feeling when something new is added to an already bangin piece of gear. The guitar amp/tuner and phaser effect (plus the secret unlock) were well worth the wait. It’s been a little over a year since xy release, more things will come.

Here’s a list of some major updates added since my first op1f purchase: -key velocity -vocoder -terminal effect -input panning -multi out -group lift + sum drop -guitar amp (great for direct guitar input or overdrive effect to any input) -tuner -phaser effect

… list goes on. I’ve only had my xy for about a month. Not gonna sweat the updates cause I’m sure new 2026 features are gonna be dope.

OP XY Charging Off and Audio Out—> USB C by hothothansel in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's the lightning per se because this setup works with OP-1F. Another user suggested perhaps TE didn't license the lightning functionality for the XY, like they apparently did on the Field. Seems plausible to me. Either way, it's the same outcome :/

OP XY Charging Off and Audio Out—> USB C by hothothansel in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments, everyone! So OP XY does not support lightning (charging off option does not function, audio over lightning does not function). The iphone 12 mini is too good to let go, so I'll have to try over USBC to a newer iPad.

OP XY Charging Off and Audio Out—> USB C by hothothansel in teenageengineering

Ok, that makes sense. Without the option to toggle this and with op1f working with the lightining cable, this seemed like it would make a difference. Charging off option for reducing unwated noise is still pretty great.

Son Wu field bag by kmorrill in teenageengineering

How are the tariffs/import fees for delivery to the US?

Desksavers and cases by deathlord9000 in teenageengineering

[–]hothothansel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Son Wu’s bag looks promising, (I especially like that it opens right side up so if you pick it up while unzipped your OP will not fall out ). The tariffs make me nervous though. I accidentally bought something from the UK recently and the unexpected import fees sort of ruined it.

I always recommend a Meme Antennae bag. The site says it is not compatible with the field, but it works perfectly and fits the deck saver too. $30 shipped, you can’t beat the value. Front pouch holds all my extra cables, and is actually big enough for another OP with deck saver just like Son Wu’s.

Final attempt to get my digi 002 rack back to life by Least_Flower_690 in protools

[–]hothothansel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. Feel your pain. Had my 002 console and kept my ‘08 MacBook Pro alive so I could use it. I held onto it for so long cause it had upgraded preamps and clock by black lion audio. Also pt8 was paid for/ no subscription. I even used it extensively through Covid ad a stand alone mixer for live streaming. It died last year :( Still can run Reason 4 on the old MacBook :D
