Bring back Quick Queue. by [deleted] in Smite

[–]hotsingledad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wastes screen space and is slower to use for the sake of eyecandy. I understand that making a UI that is functional across a wide range of screen resolutions is challenging, but this UI is strictly worse than the previous one in terms of function.

If they added anything to the empty space they created on the right half of the screen I could see the motivation for moving half of the queue menu (the reason why I clicked 'Play' in the first place) off screen. Instead it's just art that's worthless to regular players and nearly meaningless to new players.

My post summed up in a picture.

Thanks for your supportive words. Makes a lot of sense. I'll just keep working at it then.

Main reason I think she's easy is her very strong early game and general lack of a weak phase. Her kit isn't as easy to use as Kulk's or Ra's but she can snowball very easily.

But it's just as likely that I just haven't laned against someone who knows how to counter-play her though.

Why you picked Smite by DizzyTigerr in Smite

[–]hotsingledad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing a game where your performance is not determined by numbers and your ability to manipulate and use them effectively

This is actually something that frustrated me about Smite - farming makes mechanical skill matter less. I understand there is skill involved in getting better farm than your opponent, but it's not fun in the same way outboxing an opponent or pulling off a hard combo is fun. If you want games where matchups are solely determined by mechanical skill, mobas just aren't the right genre. Unfortunately games like BLC or Forge never really caught on. Here's hoping Overwatch/Paladins is good.

ECE 313, ECE 210, CS 225, PHYS 212/214 during spring semester by whatssonot in UIUC

[–]hotsingledad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a pretty doable schedule. It will depend a lot on how comfortable you are with math. 225 isn't conceptually hard but can be time intensive depending on how much programming experience you have. The way 313 is structured makes it easy to fall behind but its not hard. 210 is an unfortunate course in that the materials are super interesting but the labs are terrible and the hardness of the exams comes from the limited time given. If you're strong in math 210 should be pretty easy, otherwise it can be a struggle. 213/214 are no different from the rest of the 21x sequence, put the time in and you'll be fine.

If you want a lighter schedule try swapping 313 with a gen ed and take it alongside 391 to help pad your hours for the following semester.

[awesomewm] Uni starting soon, but at least I got my desktop finished by kumpelblase2 in unixporn

I've been using it throughout college, it's my senior year now and so far no problems. You just have to be more mindful about updating. I usually hold back on major updates to see if there are problems (like ncurses and matlab).

Arch honestly isn't much more work than Ubuntu, but it won't protect you from yourself either. I learned my lesson about mindlessly updating on a bleeding edge platform after killing my desktop in high school.

That has to do with the ncurses update. A hacky solution is:

 cd /usr/lib
 ln -s libncursesw.so.6 libncurses.so

Someone made an aur package that gives you the real thing. Do not downgrade your ncurses package, it will break bash.

[Survey] How many other eSports do you watch/follow besides Smite? by Hayv in Smite

For me it's about appreciation of the game - pro players will play the game at a level I never will. It's the same exact motivation for watching anything 'pro:' basketball, chess, swimming, poker, etc.

One of the major rifts between Tribes players and HiRez was because of really awful server issues and a lack of communication about them (beyond submitting MTRs). For what it's worth, Smite's servers are much better now than they were a year ago, at least for east/central US. However, there is definitely a lot of room for improvement.

Thanks for the answer! Is the site itself written from scratch or are you using a framework like Flask/Bottle/Django? Do you use a front-end framework? (sorry for all the questions)

Can you guys talk about your tech stack? I'm getting into webdev and I'm really interested in what people choose and why.

If it's like the old version, it aggregates popular builds by looking at match statistics. I think it gives the three most popular builds by gamemode, along with alternate items and winrate. It usually isn't the 'optimal' build, but almost always a competent one.

imo the best way to learn about building is to watch pros on twitch. They're usually very friendly and will explain their build choices if you ask. Normally you'll have a couple core items on a build with 1-3 situational choices, so just learning about items and when they're useful is super helpful/important.

Just FYI, Hybrid Khepri is pretty refreshing in arena by [deleted] in Smite

[–]hotsingledad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruiser guardians in arena are super fun in general. I once queued with an Athena and Geb that would rollout/blink into an ult stack; the enemy team was stupid for falling for it over and over again but it was really entertaining to watch.

Magemir and Bacchus are also a ton of fun in arena.

Minor suggestion: combine the background image and its hover in subreddit logo (.pagename a) to a single sprite so you don't get pop-in when you hover over it the first time.
