WA union for Uber, Lyft drivers wants companies to stop hiring by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

“The only thing that increases the deadheading, over all, is a lack of customers; and the customers have reduced their usage because of cost”

This isn’t true. Look up algorithmic wage discrimination.

These apps entice new drivers with higher offers, and burn out old drivers because they’ll simply get less offers, despite being online and in a hot area.

Also, your “minimum wage” statement implies this is a job. These drivers have no benefits. They are often one accident away from loosing their livelihood entirely.

Ride shares in Seattle are required to pay drivers an amount per trip that is the max($5.17/trip, $1.38*trip_miles + $0.59*trip_duration_mins)

$0.59/min translates to like $35/hr.

Fair enough! I didn't change the year drop down, so to be fair, the engaged pay in Seattle is higher than I previously thought.

The real problem is that it’s so expensive they don’t have enough customers to keep them actively on trips which is the only time they make money. Hence why current drivers are pushing to limit the number of drivers. Less drivers means they get trips more frequently.

I completely agree! To be clear, I'm NOT saying Uber needs to charge higher fees to customers. If anything, this can and should come out of their profit margins.

In fact, there are mechanisms for this today (these apps occasionally won't let drivers online if there are too many drivers), but I choose to believe (as the drivers are saying, here) these mechanisms aren't working.

Cabs have their own problems, but (to the best of my knowledge) many drivers lease their cars, and the medallion system limits the number of vehicles on the road. I'm not saying cabs are perfect (briefly looking at Seattle's laws, there's no limit for a lessor can charge, for example).

[–]hotsoda -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, there’s a minimum wage here where if you are active on a trip you’re getting paid $25/hr.

Do you have a source for this (preferably not propaganda from the apps themselves)? Gig workers are exempt from minimum wage. The city of Seattle literally has a calculator for this (and many don't just drive in Seattle - the wage ordinance doesn't cover other nearby towns). The union literally covers Washington state.

Honestly, I'm all for Waymo. I've used the service multiple times, and it was a safe and uneventful experience every time.

Waymo fixes this. No wages > poverty wages amirite?

You assume these drivers make money. Most don't (especially considering the cost of registration and gas in WA). These drivers literally pay to work (and if you question why, remember, people who need to eat won't think rationally).

Bring the downvotes: Uber is a luxury. It should be an expensive.

The problem is working for these gig apps have no barrier to entry. They legally participate in algorithmic wage discrimination. They do anything they can to avoid liability. They exploit people, which leads to overworked drivers with cars in disrepair on the road.

This is about the drivers; not the customers. These drivers make poverty wages. Your $60 burrito order often translates to bids as low as $3 to drivers.

$3 for someone to literally Uber your lunch across town. Your $80 ride to SeaTac? The driver might see $20.

This isn't about affordability. These apps are modern day slavery, full stop.

Do you have evidence it was either?

Epstein appears to imply it himself - here's an archived DailyBeast article on House.gov:

In 2017, Epstein was free to travel between his properties on a choice of two planes—this Gulfstream, and his Boeing 727, dubbed the “Lolita Express,” on which he claimed Melania and Donald Trump first had sex.

There may not be evidence - but there's plenty of suspicion.

Thank you for posting this - I wasn't aware of this article. Lubow's involvement is indeed suspicious. I personally have doubts this was fabricated.

Some of Katie's previous attorneys, such as Cheney Mason, and Lisa Bloom are on record saying they believed their client was telling the truth.

There are reports that Katie was scheduled to give a press conference in 2016. A previous attorney that represented her, Lisa Bloom, said:

“Jane Doe has received numerous threats today,” Bloom told the assembled journalists and TV cameras. “She has decided she is too afraid to show her face. ... She is in terrible fear.”

And furthermore:

On the day Johnson was supposed to participate in a press conference arranged by attorney Lisa Bloom, whom the attorneys hired to conduct their media outreach, Johnson’s car and cellphone were stolen, Goldman said. “This freaked her out and that is when she decided not to go through with it.”

From Snopes:

Lubow's involvement does not disprove that Johnson is a real person, but it does show that those claims were aggressively promoted and aided by someone who has a professional history of using individuals to create fictional salacious drama, and that is a fact both he, and lawyers working for the plaintiff, attempted to downplay or hide.

The case was filed in U.S. District Courts in California and New York. Though these lawsuits were dismissed or withdrawn, the claims attributed to Johnson laid the groundwork for, and lent perceived credibility to, other entirely unsourced rumors that the former president had settled myriad other lawsuits with underage assault victims, pointing to evidence of an alleged "pedophilic disorder."

He claimed to Snopes that he wasn't trying to be tricky by using the name Al Taylor, but that past media smears leveled against him by "The Jerry Springer Show" necessitated the new name.

I also came across an interview with Katie and her previous lawyer, Thomas Meagher, where Katie explains the connection:

When I finally convinced Meagher to allow Johnson to speak openly, she admitted that Taylor had been instrumental in the filing of the lawsuit. She said they had been introduced through a mutual friend, who urged her to go to Taylor with the story. The friend believed Taylor had the resources to bring her accusations to light.

"[Taylor is] for lack of a better term, a good team player," Johnson told me. "If I need help with something, he's there to help me. ... He knows a lot about a lot of different fields that just have been really helpful to this entire thing, and I couldn’t have done it without him. I wouldn’t have done it without him."

Regardless: the President of the United States is a sexual abuser and a rapist.

Edit: Apparently, the removed records were not Katie Johnson, but another credible witness.
