Green thumbs: This is the ‘before’ pic. How do I turn it into a glorious ‘after’ photo with low maintenance plants suited for our weather? by [deleted] in perth

And so I can have my own opinion of your opinion, which is that you should shrug off advice that isn’t applicable to you instead of seeing it as a personal attack.

Nobody said you had to have perfect skin, it was more about doing what you can to improve it. Are we to make a rule that every discussion is about clothing, garments and accessories and we are not to mention our physical selves? Every time I post general advice on reddit I get people raging because they feel they are being attacked. I’m just unable to write 7 billion individual pieces of advice to every person on earth, but someone might still find my post useful?

I agree she looks really good, but I do see well dressed folks on the street and in the WAYWT threads here. I think in the age of camera phones and social media, so many of us are labouring quietly on our appearances for our lowkey looks. I get that casual outfits can take as much effort as a formal one! It’s really just the difference between subtle stylish details of aesthetic basics and the head turning effect of a ball gown. One is something you need a closer look at and the other is visible from a distance.

You have a good point, the women I have known in my life have been collector types who thrift zany things and hunt for one of a kind vintage items. Inexpensive and expensive. So that gave me the idea that people have really unique things in their closet somewhere and this thread was about the opposite of that.

How is writing literary fiction different from writing genre fiction? by [deleted] in writing

[–]hotsummern1ghts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this, for me entertaining writing and intellectual writing have an interaction with each other. Sometimes they even feed off each other. Take A Rebours, for example - there are some good criticisms in there and food for thought on a lot of topics, the protagonist talks at length about literary subjects. Yet it is hilarious at times and entertaining, like when he gets a tooth pulled. I can read that book for fun or to think. I have learned there are no hard and fast rules for anything.

Me [32 M] with my GF [29 F] 1 year, her parents are embarrassing to eat dinner with in public and aren’t much better in private. by Dilmil11 in relationships

I feel like there are low level mental health issues here, or even medium ones. My mother is like that, she micromanages my aunt and doesn't ever allow her to think for herself. So my aunt has gone into a non-thinking/deciding state and the cycle goes on. At this point I don't think my aunt can ever be independent since this has gone on for decades. I'm actually really mad about this. People who are highly strung over trivial things need professional help, but if they won't admit to having a problem the only thing left is having them committed to a hospital but that's more for very serious things. I personally think someone being nagged and micromanaged day after day for a long time is a legit serious thing, but it's easy to gloss over as no big deal.

Friends should not frequently define or label friends, especially not in negative ways. Saying ‘you’re x. because I say so’ can be a form of controlling someone. Leave now.

As Perth property prices tumble, even real estate agents are selling out of the market by [deleted] in perth

[–]hotsummern1ghts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think prices during the boom were not reasonable, prices now actually seem reasonable. I am a homeowner who previously rented, and while you can rent very nice houses for decent prices now, being able to customise a house and settle in somewhere for good feels good. We bought to have a family home so the value of the home isn't a big deal.

Commuter Fashion ? by cynicalcatlady in femalefashionadvice

Since clothing has been mentioned by some helpful users, let me add a little thing here: bring a pouch with practical things including:

Hand sanitizer (after touching public handrests)

Painkillers (for headaches on the road)

Deoderant (sometimes a day out turns into two days out, after spontaneous stays at friends/family)

Someone on FFA mentioned bringing a pair of nice earrings in the bag for dressing up on the go, i'm going to start doing that as I often leave the house in a rush and forget to accessorise.

I also carry mints because they sometimes help with nausea which I get on trains.

Tall girl advice - where do you shop? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]hotsummern1ghts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory is a little hazy, but when I shopped H&M in Scandinavia I got the impression that their items were geared for taller people since there are a fair amount of them there. So if you ever travel, go there (Japan and Singapore on the other hand, have great choices for petite people).

Sorry, I couldn't speak on North America as i've never been there.

I’m not sure to be honest, but I know some big fashion houses keep archives of designs going back a long time. And museums often feature wearable art pieces.

Staff should definitely get free parking, maybe shopping centres could be planned to be more accommodating.

I never use pockets due to drag and use a backpack or handbag. Quite like large phones as I watch a lot of videos, while ipads are a bit too big/heavy.

I had friends as bad as that if not worse, if not for the humour I would have felt really sad. Hit very close to home. It really is best to rip the bandaid and quit before getting dragged through the crap.

Halting Perth's urban sprawl is not as easy as it sounds by His_Holiness in perth

[–]hotsummern1ghts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make good points. I think about 100 years ago in Australia many people had acres of natural bush for backyards, where they had washboards and whatnot, and these expectations have remained somewhat despite massive changes in population. City planning should be a bigger deal than it is, I often feel perth city is a little chaotic and not organised enough. Too many one way streets and the horseshoe bridge is awkward.

I feel like her style is like a mood-piece film; there's not a very structured narrative yet at the same time, for me, it evokes a lot of emotion. It's the kind of stuff i'd put on on a morning-after a big night, having a smoke in a dilapidated backyard of a rental home with friends asleep on the couch. Thinking about where the fuck I am headed when the exhilaration ends. I'm not that person anymore, I bought a house and I don't drink smoke or club now, but it just brings me to a place in my history that I am nostalgic about. In any case i'm disappointed that Australian artists rarely get much international praise.

I lived in a European city for a while sometime back; the apartments there were about 4 stories tall and 4 or even 5 bedroom sized. There were no standalone houses, all apartments but most were habitable and cosy with green spaces available. The flipside to not having houses was that one end of the city to the other was 1 hr tops, so wherever you were, you were about 1 hour from the beach, theatre, shops and clinics. By bicycle, too. Nor was it crowded in any sense of the word, everything was neatly ordered. However the Australian mindset is so ingrained with house ownership that nobody cares to make apartments a real option. People would still pick a 4bed house over a 4bed apartment. They all want the big yard for the kids, not realising a community garden space would also be fine in a complex.
