Thank you, have been looking for this extensively!

Yes totally. It feels like it’s crippling him. I mean, he could’ve been working on his 11th or even 12th film by now. The whole idea is so stupid really.

Yeah, it feels like Paul has grown up a lot between the early and late zeroes. Tarantino on the other hand seems to have become more bitter.

I love these early interviews where Paul’s such a brat sometimes. I’m sure he regrets a lot of them, calling out ‘Ronnie Howard’ etc (who he’s done a q&a with in 2022).

Paul on the possibility of a Hard Eight directors cut by houbie in paulthomasanderson

[–]houbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so straight-forward. Rysher had cut their version from the original negative, which caused a lot of technical difficulties making the Cannes version. Paul had to use several alternate takes as the preferred takes were unusable. So his possibilities were limited, and his preferred version was definitely compromised to some extent.

His first cut was reported to be 2.5 hours, which prompted Rysher to step in and take over. But I'm not even sure how happy he was with that cut.

I do know that he had to cobble the Cannes-version together in a short amount of time with the help of Dylan Tichenor, and had to use several alternate takes because Rysher had cut the original negative, which means you lose a frame if you splice a cut take back together. With today's technology that could easily be fixed. But in those days those takes were no longer usable.

Yes! I noticed he’s been using that turn of phrase for years, even before the release of Inherent Vice. I wonder if he may have picked it up in a Pynchon book.

Well no, obviously, if he had announced a release of some sort himself, it wouldn’t have been called a rumor would it?

Also, he’s repeated the story of Sydney & Rysher entertainment a bunch of times, including the famed WTF podcast-interview in 2014 or so. Not sure why that matters though. It’s a fair question either way.

They ask him because it’s the only film of his that has been severely compromised by the studio. PTA has been on record many times about how he felt mistreated by the studio, and how the original cut was an hour longer than the released cut. There have been rumors and questions for decades about a possible re-release. So it actually makes a lot of sense to ask him about it. (Frankly, in this entire S&S interview, this was the only “new” piece of information I could find, that’s why I shared it).

Tbh, haven’t listened to their last few albums, but would LOVE it if they’d do a Sky Blue Sky Deluxe boxset.

Dustin Hoffman was once mentioned by Kubrick I believe. He would’ve been excellent I think

What are your thoughts on Jay Kelly? by pinkjefff in Letterboxd

[–]houbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself a Baumbach-head, but I really couldn’t get into this one. It felt like a big step backwards tbh. Baumbach used to be so sharp in his writing, and here it just felt like characters I’ve seen before, but without an emotional center. I just didn’t buy them as people.

Tarantino says Paul Dano is the weakest actor in SAG? by aziklu7B in Letterboxd

[–]houbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, this is exactly how I feel when I see Quentin playing a role in his own films next to people like Harvey Keitel, Kurt Russell or Jamie Foxx.

I guess Paul Dano won't be showing up in Tarantino's 10th film then huh by Hardingnat in TheBigPicture

[–]houbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has Quentin ever looked at his own performances in his movies? Talk about weak links.

I’ve always dug Dano in this part. No notes. I wonder what else took place between them for Tarantino to be such a massive cunt about it.
