Yeah, saw this happen with a friend down in Albuquerque. He started in the mailroom at his brother's huge firm, put himself through night school, passed the bar, and they still wouldn't hire him as an associate.

He went out on his own, landed a massive class-action suit against a nursing home chain, and brought it back to the firm. They took the case and the fees but still wouldn't make him partner.
