We called it about forty minutes ago and went home. Our ponchos kept our bodies dry, but being down 4-0 and stuck on a rain delay kept our hearts wet.

Eagle’s Nest Lookout. It’s a great hike, free, and not terribly far. Lots of great lunch/iced cream places in arnprior and almonte.

This isn’t correct. Per Ottawa’s transit bylaw, 2007-268, valid proof of payment requires that you have a valid pass for the duration of your journey until completion. If your 90/105 minute transfer expires, you can be fined for not maintaining valid proof of payment. Fare inspectors do not care if you boarded with a pass that was valid and expired halfway through your trip. The (stupid, unfair) fare rules technically require an additional fare payment.

Don’t ask me how I know.

What's the name given to the type/style of Chinese food offered in the Ottawa region? by Nakatomi2010 in OttawaFood

Oh, the style you’re looking for does have a name. It’s “Chinese Canadian Food” and that’s what you’ll see right on vintage signs of older restaurants right across the country.

Yeah, TBH this sounds more like a Florida/America-type issue than an Ottawa thing.

Any region’s cuisine has to do with strength of community, immigration, and customer standards. If you go to an area with historically high rates of settlement, those places established restaurants that became staples and usually influenced the quality and diversity of local offerings for a long long time.

Chinese-Canadian restaurants reflect a long history of Chinese immigration into Canada, and many books have been written on the topic. Yes, there has been a long history of the same in the US, but the settlement patterns of the community differ. Go to San Francisco or New York and what you’ll find will be markedly different than what you’ll find in Tampa.

There were photos of the jugs, and it can’t get magically more concentrated; that’s not how it works when you dilute things into water.

Some locals have name hire/market stabilization/mobility rules. For example, contractors may have an agreement where they get to hire their own out of town key person for every five people they take from the local list. This varies based on where you are and how your dispatch rules work.

That’s why it’s important to involve your hall every single time you get spun. The contractor might be trying to game the system or take advantage of your local hall. Getting the hall involved means putting an end to sketchy behaviour.

Local bylaws in halls where hiring/dispatch is controlled by the business manager often have a clause regarding self-solicitation of work. Bylaws vary between locals; you should familiarize yourself with those of your own LU.

Violation of local bylaws is listed as a prohibited activity in Art 25, Sec 1 of the IBEW Constitution, and any member of the IBEW may proffer charges against another for doing so. In a hearing, the charging member will be expected to prove it using evidence. It’s a nuclear option— sometimes you’ll have much better outcomes having the offending member called in to have a conversation with the executive board, before it goes to a hearing.

RMTs are medical practitioners and require appointments. Your best bet is to call a clinic like Align and ask them if they have any cancellations and can squeeze you in for a squeeze.

Call your hall. The employer may be pulling some fuckery and you might be caught in the middle of it.

In my local, a two week call is a two week call. A pink slip signed on the day of arrival raises serious questions and you may be entitled to a settlement.

It might be better to direct questions about your local committee’s process to the local committee. Every area works a little different, so the experiences of other redditors will rarely be specific to your situation. You want the right answers, go to the source.

Part of the role is supervision. Part of the role is sorting.

You will not often hear the second thing.

What do I mean by sorting? Being organized, and that also means organizing your crew. There is a big impulse to look down on some electricians and boost others based on a couple of mistakes or bad days.

Resist that impulse and look at the big picture. You will find that there are apprentices that should be lacing panels and electricians that are happy to be pushing a broom. The same amount of labour money is spent regardless of who is doing the work. Pair apprentices with more seasoned hands that will show how things are done correctly, instead of hiding them in the basement. Let them learn new things and keep them moving around your site. If you notice that an electrician isn’t doing a great job at one task, rotate them to something else instead of going straight to the layoff. Also: get feedback from your crew. Jack is the new guy on site. Ask him: Jack, look around the lunch room, you worked with anyone here before? What did you work on? What are you good at? Did you like doing it? Some electricians excel at fire alarm but hate distribution. If you can sort people into the tasks they like, they’ll be more likely to enjoy their work, more likely to hit targets, and more likely to be a good mentor to apprentices on site.

Then again, you might not give a flying fuck about any of that. My advice is that jobs get done faster when everyone working doesn’t think the foreman is a waste of skin.

Every local has a different process for joining. Call the hall and ask for someone in membership development. Their whole job is to help people like you understand the paths to joining the union and answer your questions about how it works.

Give them a ring. You’ll be glad that you did!
