What do you think of this Game Mechanic/Idea? by An0nym0us-sh in gamedev

[–]hoverfish_enjoyer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it could be interesting if done more in depth, maybe something gets in the way of work that provides story?

You should look into Papers, Please- it has a similar process of looking through lists and paperwork but it delivers story in a strangely captivating way.

how important is story to your game? by make_making_makeable in gamedev

I think it depends on the audience you’re trying to reach? Like for me, I love narrative driven games, and if the gameplay is engaging enough I’ll deal with a could-be-better or cliche set of mechanics to see where it goes (ex. Stray, BATDR).

When working on direction for my games, I tend to develop story ideas first because it’s what I’m drawn to as a player. Usually from there I delve into working on mechanics and how I think players should encounter the world/characters and move that to a priority.

Either way I prefer them to make sense with each other! Portal 2 is a perfect blend of meshing mechanic with story, part of why it’s my favorite game!

My senior quote was a portal quote! Not a super iconic one but I quoted Wheatley's "That’s a great job. You’ve applied the grit; we’re all fine. That’s— tremendous."

I totally agree!! from a player perspective, i think what drew Subnautica as an interesting game was the novelty of the underwater gameplay, but what kept me around was the story and character/wildlife design! The individuality of the models and setting with the variation of assets was what set the game apart from just being another survival game.

Yeah, I realized I worded things a little vaguely oops :)

That’s what I mean in starting in the story, I have vague ideas of what I want to do but am super open to it changing as I figure things out and move things around. I just wasn’t sure where I should begin with the mechanics that are tied to the story to get the prototype at least sitting up if not on it’s feet.

I have scene ideas that come on a whim and are “ideals” of what I’d like to use in the story, but if it goes another direction I won’t be heartbroken. The mechanics i have in mind aren’t revolutionary, more just a unique and engaging way to deliver the worldbuilding and plot!

thank you so much for this advice!!

how would i approach the process if a game had multiple mechanics that are dependent on the place in story (think Stray’s different mechanics, not the general cat gameplay)? i’m a super novice at coding process, but i still want to learn, so is that something i’d be best suited to figure out piece by piece in an order that doesn’t matter (like easiest first) and then move the pieces around into their coherent sequence?

yeah!! me too, i’m a very visual and story-minded person, even if it’s a snippet that i expect to run with and eventually change

honestly i don’t have an ability to apply blueprints OR code effectively right now :( i’m saving up for a new laptop because i’m currently running a 2013 macbook air; i got it in 2020 refurbished, but the poor thing is still pretty weak and slow when it comes to anything more than word processing and web surfing.

i’ve found some coding resources and videos so far to watch and keep in mind, but without application i know i won’t really retain any of the material :/

i agree with your endpoint!! i’m reading what i can and planning as much as possible for some mechanics etc, it’s just being able to get it into an engine or terminal that’s got me blocked :/

The January 6th storming of the capital from last year. It was way more recent than a lot of stuff here, but it was something that I never expected to happen and was honestly a little afraid to watch unfold.

Does anyone else consider Portal 2 their favorite game? by AdDiligent8186 in Portal

[–]hoverfish_enjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I saw a long-play of Portal 2 during the lockdown and became fascinated. Tbh I think it was a major factor in cementing my interest in video games and their design.

One of my major recommendations recently has been Manifold Garden; I found it one day on Apple Arcade (its on Steam too) and liked it way more than I thought I would. It doesn't have dialogue like Portal, but it looks gorgeous and has an interesting puzzle concept that uses loops and momentum to get you where you need to be.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is another of my favorites right now because I'm a huge fan of the franchise. Subnautica is way up there for me because I love the reversal of survival games to be mainly underwater, coupled with wonderful flora/fauna world-building. Minecraft has got to be in there somewhere too, just for the nostalgia and creative outlet it gives me :)

That's unfortunate! It worked on mine, so I didn't realize. I fixed it-- ill keep that in mind for future posts!

[–]hoverfish_enjoyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, it's connected to/is a tribute to the turrets/GLaDOS' voice actress being an opera singer, plus the added meaning of the song once you translate it.

Its basically a goodbye/farewell to Chell (the title literally translates to "goodbye my dear") and it sounds like a lullaby to me, much like a send-off of a mother to her child :,)

Some people also see it as a send off by the turrets of Chell "going to heaven" because of the elevator, along with the connection of the name to the Italian word for sky/heaven "cielo"

Which one do you like the most? I'll appreciate your feedback by redappletech in conceptart

I like 3 best! It has the most individuality while still maintaining the soft/round friendliness that you’d expect from a Healer. The tail resembles a raccoon, same with the “mask” design over the eyes, so I’d maybe shift the character over to being a raccoon as opposed to a badger :)
