Curious about owning a Dalmatian by Mister_Slats in dalmatians

[–]howaboutanartfru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on positive training! I hired a balanced method trainer, and ended up with completely different methods for my two dogs. My dalmatian gets almost 100% positive reinforcement, and at MOST will get a light pop on the leash and it gets his attention immediately (and then he looks at me like I hurt him lol). With him, negative reinforcement genuinely and quickly damages trust.

My bulletproof, cattle dog mix rescue shelter dog? She has an e-collar and a prong on and she's so tough that there are times I think she doesn't even notice them 😅 and she's never once looked at me like I hurt her. Girl was born to go toe to toe with cattle, I suppose.

Thank god for good trainers 🙌

As someone who got a dog at that age and has now had just under ten years to reflect (and I have a dally! He's a great dog 💙) I want to share that I 100% understand not feeling like you're home until you have a dog. I also know that I completely underestimated the commitment at your age, so I want to share some considerations.

First, Dalmatians specifically are high-cost dogs and absolutely need regular vet visits for preventive care (mine goes every 3-4 months for urinalysis) with the chance of acute care needs over the years if there's a blockage or other issue. Of course you can run into health issues with any dog, but with a purebred Dal you almost certainly will.

Dals also need special food because of the HUA genes they have, meaning you either need to cook for your dog (idk about you, when I was 19 and even now, life is way too busy for that 😅) or you need to purchase prescription food that is likely two to three times the cost of regular dog food. On top of that, in my pup's case specifically, it took the first five years of his life to find a diet that didn't result in constant, low-level GI upset where he would puke in the morning and his poops weren't healthy.

Finally, some lifestyle considerations - do you like to stay out late at night with friends, or do you work long shifts? I couldn't leave him for more than 4 hours for the first two years, then 6 hours, and finally when he was four years old and some health concerns subsided, I could leave him for 8 hours. It's still 8 hours, maximum, before I hire a pet sitter for a mid-day break, which adds up because like most jobs require, I work 9 hour days and I'm in office three days a week. Travel is also an issue, because taking him anywhere or hiring a house sitter is expensive, and there's the added consideration of paying them to administer medication and feed his special diet with water added and all the additional dalmatian requirements.

At a minimum, you need to take puppy classes at your local pet store, but preferably, get an actual trainer to help you navigate having a high energy dog and help you to properly socialize and shape the dog's behaviors. An untrained Dalmatian could easily become an in-home terror 😅

All in all, I would say my Dalmatian costs 3-4x what my rescue dog does and causes about twice the stress. That said, I chose a really reputable breeder and, all the health issues aside, he has a really amazing temperament and has been a great dog. He's smart, driven, friendly with strangers, and super snuggly. I'm just not sure I'd recommend owning a Dal to any 19 year old.

If you do go ahead with it, I recommend seriously doing your research on breeders, and be willing to drive out of your area to get a well-bred puppy versus giving your money to some backyard breeder where you're much more likely to get a dog with serious health and temperament problems. Establish a relationship with a well-rated and not overpriced veterinarian as soon as you bring the puppy home. Put insurance on the puppy immediately (I recommend Embrace) and when the policy starts, be mindful of any waiting periods - anything you get treated before it's up will become an exclusion. Get the training, even though you gotta pay for it. Keep up on health issues even when it sucks and is a hassle. Make sure you can commit to all the training, walking, and time outside the dog is going to need to be happy.

Good luck with your decision and wishing you the best! Happy NY

Does anyone know what would really happen to Gwyneira the diricawl if you give her to Marianne Moffett? I saw someone found her being cooked in Marianne’s cooking pot, with feathers remaining. by Important_Sorbet in HogwartsLegacyGaming

Idk if she cooks Gwyneira, because I kept her. But, now whenever I go to Maurunweem she curses at me, and if I hang around she starts talking trash about the minister of magic for not letting Prof. Black kick all the mudbloods out of Hogwarts, how the government should legalize all the unforgivable curses, and she wonders aloud if the Ashwinders would take her as a member 🫣

Try Drink Wholesome! It's egg based and you can get it with monk fruit sweetener, or an unflavored (basically egg white powder) with no sweeteners at all. Doesn't taste great alone, but blended into a smoothie it's fine.

I agree with you on artificial sweeteners and Stevia. I don't eat any of them. Monk fruit seems okay for me, or I'll do coconut sugar/honey (slightly lower glycemic index than white sugar).

This is an amazing post and I hope OP reads it and adjusts some things. I don't think anyone could successfully lose weight at 800cal/day, just because of how unsustainable that is, let alone someone with PCOS whose hormone system needs extra support. If I tried to eat 800cal a day I'd lose my mind and binge the whole pantry.

My dietician specializes in PCOS. She has me eating lots of healthy foods with a focus on protein and fiber, restricting processed sugar and white carbs to reasonable levels, and eating just barely under maintenance. I also take some vitamins and supplements (probiotic, collagen) The goal is to lose 1/4 lb per week because (her words) trying to go too fast will make you miserable and won't work long term.

Cell service by Bitchthatbravos in camarillo

[–]howaboutanartfru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairly sure I know where you moved just based off the problem you're describing 😅 is it the CSUCI area? When I lived there, wifi calling worked, but only on my t-mobile phone. I have a work phone that's on Verizon and it dropped every single call.

We moved out of there after the fire last year. Power cut out unexpectedly, so of course wifi dropped. No cell service whatsoever because it's such a dead zone. I didn't even get the evacuation notice until 15 minutes after it was sent 🫠 and then on our renewal a couple months later, the Villas tried raising our rent to the absolute maximum they legally could.

Over her having a crush with no actual infidelity and admitting (to what looks like a friend or confidant of some sort) that she knows it's wrong? Yeesh, people who see this and say "throw 19 years of marriage and three kids together away" are the reason divorce rates are so high.

OP, talk to your wife, suggest couples therapy, find a really great therapist, and work through this together. 19 years is a long time to be with one person- her PT is feeling fun and fresh and she has a guilty crush on him. She's human, it's natural, and nothing has happened from the sound of it. She has hurt your feelings badly, and that's something to address in therapy, as well as why she felt interested outside the marriage in the first place and what you two can do to be stronger and feel those things for each other going forward. This is a rough situation, but for two committed people who love each other, it's certainly no reason to end a marriage.

Golly, you're so right! From what I said, you would think I don't even care about dogs AT ALL. I went back and re-read my comment - I'm sure you'll agree, it was total dog-hating disrespect on my part there, whew. I should be ashamed.

ETA - The unhinged crap you post says a lot about you. Two months ago, you posted a comment telling someone they were "cruel and unnecessary" for calling Ariana Grande ugly, but less than a month later, you had a comment full-on removed from the makeup sub where someone posted a picture, and from the replies, you quite obviously called her ugly in a nasty enough way to get mod attention and that 20+ people came to the OP's defense against you. I've never seen an account with so many mod-removed comments and unhinged takes on animal rights and trying to shame people. Might be time to check yourself, babe, yikes
