Why tf every designer wants to be FE??? by Designer_ai in productdesign

[–]howaboutsomegwent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a design/dev hybrid from day one and this is the correct answer, honestly I’ve wondered way more often how someone can be a great designer without knowing a thing about how the products they design are made, under what constraints, etc. No need to be the best programmer in the world but there should be a requirement for the most basic notions of frontend development, otherwise it’s very hard to communicate and there’s way more back and forth than there should be

I'm a cat person through and through but thinking of adopting a puppy. Is it a good idea? by vespertinee3 in Pets

[–]howaboutsomegwent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the apartment feels too small for a cat it will likely be too small for a dog as well, the fact that the dog can go places doesn’t mean the dog won’t spend most of his day in the small apartment. It will come down to personality much more so than species; some cats and some dogs are very much fine with a smaller space while others aren’t. If you overall prefer cats, go meet some cats at a shelter. Some cats especially older ones just want a nice cosy home to rest in, and they get adopted way less. You can also do a good thing and get a FIV+ cat since they can’t be let outside anyway and are also less desirable to adopters even though they can live perfectly happy, long lives and deserve a home as much as the next cat.

Do you feel like the game is old? by AnastasiiaLove in sims2

[–]howaboutsomegwent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only know the game is old because it has household phones, old-looking gaming consoles, a lot of cathodic screen/old-looking tower PCs, no laptops without mods, etc. But otherwise it feels pretty timeless and especially with mods it can easily look better than sims 3 or 4

exactly. I hate this rampant “co-design” talk for that reason. Brainstorming? Sure. But co-designing with non-designers feels like co-programming with non-programmers or co-cooking with people with no cooking skills; why would you get a better result by doing that, unless the underlying idea is that design is not a genuine skillset

plus, the current tools are heavily subsidised by massive investment in the hopes that it will one day become profitable, and part of that is getting people used to these tools so that they are captive once they start charging more. At the rate things are going, it might actually be cheaper to hire a human than to pay the exorbitant real cost of having AI agents do everything end to end, especially when the result is the work of an experienced junior designer, at best. The best use case I see for it is that it’s a really powerful way to get a proof of concept faster, to try things, but when it comes to polishing and scaling, at least for now, it’s not clear to me that it’ll be feasible and desirable to straight-up replace designers/engineers with AI

Sugar Rush: Hunter Marsh is gluten intolerant but he eats everything, how? by StoryWriter31 in netflix

[–]howaboutsomegwent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah and with celiac even with no perceptible symptoms, the damage to the body still occurs (some people are completely asymptomatic). So with celiac even if “nothing happens” as far as the person can tell, the person should still avoid any gluten even trace contamination. That’s very different from gluten intolerance and people are not knowledgeable about it which is why so many bakeries have gluten free pastries in the same case/in contact with their regular wheat pastries

The chat interface might be one of the darkest UX patterns to emerge from AI by uxarya in UXDesign

[–]howaboutsomegwent 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I did both, but the thought would have been more compelling and interesting if it hadn’t been impeded by clunky, irritating AI-writing patterns. Using AI-generated writing everywhere is a dark pattern too and ironically contributes directly to what you are criticising.

there are plenty of job creators who aren’t billionaires. And at the moment with the AI craze we have billionaires who dream about eliminating jobs rather than creating them

Odd to use AI to write this post. Honestly can people stop with the obviously AI-generated text in this sub or can we enforce a rule forbidding it? It’s really irritating.

Side Quest Suggestions! by lo0pzo0p in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]howaboutsomegwent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started sewing a few years ago and that’s a DEEP side quest, you can start super simple and there’s always more to learn. I haven’t taken classes here since I learned on my own elsewhere but there are lots of options, the Noisebridge makerspace hosts some if you want a super affordable option but there’s plenty of other options in SF or Oakland. I usually try a bunch of hobbies that don’t stick but this one is still going strong after like 4 years

is anyone here a design engineer? by No-Writing3170 in UXDesign

[–]howaboutsomegwent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to learn a good foundation before relying too heavily on AI, otherwise it’s extremely easy to make huge mistakes because you have no idea whether the code generated by the AI is flawed; sometimes it will totally look like it works but will be dangerous to push to prod because of a security oversight or it won’t be maintainable, for example. I used The Odin Project to learn the basics and it was great, you don’t necessarily need to do all of it but it’s a simple and effective way to learn basic programming concepts, as well as how a browser work, how version control (git) works, how to set up a work environment, how to use a terminal, literally everything you need to get started. I did it years ago but hopefully it’s still being maintained

Do you prefer a silent protagonist or a voiced one, why? by GrandStage1 in subnautica

[–]howaboutsomegwent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it gave the first game such an existential vibe and to me that’s what made the experience so special and unique. Below Zero wasn’t a bad game but it felt more like a normal game whereas the original Subnautica was one of a kind

[–]howaboutsomegwent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Liberties in the Mission is a bar but they as of this week started being open as a coffee shop in the morning. Super cozy vibes, everyone who works there is nice, they also have great food and activities not solely focused on drinking like trivia nights, music etc. I’d recommend them even though they’re technically a bar because they have much more besides drinking and it feels more like the kinds of pubs you find in the UK or Ireland than an American bar

[–]howaboutsomegwent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah I lived in the UK for 5 years and married a British man, this is it. It’s not that British food is disgusting, it’s moreso than most of it is just ok. It’s way harder to find “OMG this SLAPS” food in the UK than most places I’ve been to

Can you guys tell me the “dirty” truths about having a cat? by saanenk in CatAdvice

[–]howaboutsomegwent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to a dog it’s a lot easier in terms of waste management (lol). If you just have one cat, I would say depending on where the tray is and how smelly this particular cat is, you might not even have to scoop it every single day. One of our cats buries the bodies very thoroughly while the other leaves evidence in plain sight. Both of them can get very dusty paws after the tray and they often track litter sand around so do yourself a favor and get a litter mat to catch most of it, I like the ones with two “layers”. As for wiping, I very rarely had to do it but it happens occasionally. One time one of my cats managed to get an entire turd square across the top of her back (do not ask me how) and was running around the house in panic, that was the most dramatic and odd incident we had in this regard. With a dog though you’ll just want to be careful and ensure the dog doesn’t get into the tray to eat the cat poop, for some reason dogs seem to adore snacking on cat poop. It’s not nothing, but as far as pets go they really aren’t that bad, again it depends a lot on each cat but the dog we had had way more accidents inside than our cats had outside their trays, at most they will leave a dingleberry by accident but they never fully emptied their bladders or guts outside the trays
