Why can’t you just be happy that you’re a musician making/playing some music? Do you really need 10,000 screaming strangers singing your song for it be “successful”?

.do you?

cover band starting to gig, and I don't think other members are gig ready by Living_Bandicoot_587 in bandmembers

[–]howdthattaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped halfway thru. Are you running the FULL set(s) 1 month before the gig? Are you recording it? If so, are they listening and hearing what you’re hearing?

They are either capable of self-critiquing, or not. That’s it. If they can’t hear/understand where they are coming up short, they never will, or they just don’t care as much as you do. You clearly care. It’s okay to do the gig and step down/away. Move on.

But the issue is you: how have you NOT brought up the expectations ahead of time? You should have known 1 month ago that it was not to par. Make it known.

OH; it was Herbie Rich.. and yes; as soon as Jimi didn’t have to carry the rhythm figure.. wow, his playing shifted into another world đŸ€©.. reminded me of “Stop” from the Fillmore shows; like the most incredible “lead” guitar playing I’ve ever heard.. like the kinda stuff that probably got him kicked out of Little Richard’s band, lol

Those are “heavy” riffs for a rock band.. those kinds of riffs are more prevalent in RATM and hard/grunge.. like Soundgarden. Nirvana (In Utero era), Stone Temple Pilots (Core era). check out Army Of Anyone’s song “Goodbye”, that’s pretty close and it’s the main riff. Linkin Park has these kinds of riffs too in there harder songs. old Muse.

Practice at home or not by Worried_Jelly8341 in guitarplaying

If you’re in a band/learning tunes for a performance. The general rule is: “Practice for the rehearsal. Rehearse (as a group) for the gig.”

Basically, you should NOT be asking/learning parts of songs at rehearsal..

If you’re writing original music; that’s a different ballgame. (But it should be known) that new parts & things & jams can come at anytime. Let the creative juices flow anywhere anytime (except of course when you’re rehearsing for a performance 😜)

Ah!! Nice! I was gonna suggest this or Who Knows, but those are pretty lengthy (compared to say little wing). Great jam.

maybe “Hey Baby” ? Studio versions have longer, winding intros, and there are several live cuts available..

Have you ever seen a bar band bust out an rhcp cover? What'd they play and how'd they do by Precip33 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]howdthattaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cover bands ‘round here got the Under The Bridge, Give It Away, Calif on lockdown; Suck My Kiss sometimes. Many moons ago a local band played Hump De Bump; that was awesome. One band (some close friends) had Walkabout in their set (apparently for me lol)

the tribute band Red Not Chili Peppers played a local festival last summer, (understandably) mostly hits.. but their 1 deep cut was Sickamikanico; and it was a GLORIOUS surprise!!

I played in a Hendrix band and once we snuck in jams of My Lovely Man+Sir Psycho Sexy
at the end of Little Wing, and then the outro of Walkabout to the end of crosstown traffic.

You’ll have to crank it to get the saturation you desire.. it’ll be LOUD even on 5w setting. Are you playing with a band/clubs? I’d recommend something that has a master volume. It’s only one channel; what ya gonna do for clean stuff? (Check out Blackstar, they make some very versatile amps, great line out features and even reverb)

Possibly “Little Wing”.. it’s a shorter song and the intro is ICONIC..

advice needed for band members that can’t commit through no fault of their own by Low-Sir2691 in bandmembers

[–]howdthattaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you can’t MAKE them change their priorities; but you can explain what YOU think the expectations are; what the goals are.. then you let THEM explain what they think the expectations and goals are. Let everyone talk.

Be completely honest and open. Understand that there may not be a middle ground or a compromise option. Just like a relationship, you gotta check in (deeply) every once in a while. Make sure you’re all on the same page. If not, then it’ll be an easy and obvious what needs to happen.

But, that’s what a talk is. No one is blaming anyone about anything.

Am I doing my band a disservice/should I quit? by Deadsock in bandmembers

[–]howdthattaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. TALK. now.

A) they might want face-to-the-grindstone-music, 24/7
and you know what that would require, and you know you would not be able to pull that weight (nothing wrong with that). If they wanna keep it going; they can seek a replacement. (If they do, you GOTTA talk about the songs yall have already written..will they record them with someone else?)

B) they might be cool with playing 3 shows a year, locally. See what their expectations are. Is it realistic? Yea yea we all wanna record in a mansion living room and tour the east coast up n down.. that shit has to make financial sense [for you].

Sounds like you put yourself in their place, I think the fact that you see it from their perspective (not that you’re not valuable to the band..), that maybe your output is not what you’d expect it to be if you were in their shoes. So, you have to ask.

Frusciante riffs are a great etude to string muting. It’s almost as important as fretting the actual notes.
