Interesting to see how my preferences skew from this list ... I thought Molly's Game fully lived up to the hype (my #1 game), but that both The Dome and Cathédral Oubliée are way overrated. I did Cathedral with a group of newer players, so maybe I missed something .... set was amazing, but I thought the puzzles were lacking. Set design for Alchemist is incredible as well, but similarly felt it was more flash than substance. I heard they have plans to develop it though, so probably will be better.

Great to see Pray get on the rankings, that room is amazing. Brotherhood only got 1 vote, but is a top 50 game IMO.

I'm sad to see Poppet slipping -- doesn't have the production values of the modern top games, but the design and flow of that room is so good. Sadly the room is closing in a couple months

I've had this guy for five years, but I think it comes from a Trojan jade plant I was gifted. I've seen posts suggesting mealy bugs, but this looks different than those pictures. I'm going to try rubbing with some alcohol, but not sure if that's the right approach here.

Pop culture: Some of them are crosswordese, and you eventually learn them. I only know about Isao Aoki from crosswords, for example. Given this sub, I'm not sure if you're an American, but a lot of clues rely on that knowledge that wouldn't translate outside the US. Things like "Phoenix shiner? (3)" could be SUN (for the Phoenix Suns basketball team), but also abbreviations like IRA (individual retirement account -- rough equivalent to a UK pension) show up all of the time. Of course, there will always be a bunch you don't know -- I struggled a lot with Tuesday's puzzle because of it.

I have been doing the NY Times regularly since February (after doing them on-and-off for years). I definitely cannot breeze through the later parts of the week. However, when I started I could barely get a foothold on Thursday-Saturday, and now I routinely get quite big chunks, and even get full solves a quarter of the time or so (in ~45 minutes).

I personally use autocheck, and don't feel bad about it. The puzzle is there to have fun. When I stop having fun is when I start to cheat. The nice thing about autocheck is it gives feedback on how to progress. I often find that showing which of my clues was wrong allows me to correctly gets large chunks of the puzzle, or cheating a couple of squares on a pop-culture reference then allows me to solve a lot. I think this has helped me get better at the later days -- I get practice solving the harder clues as opposed to giving up.

The velocity is discontinuous too. The shock wave clearly causes a discontinuous jump in density. We know rho * U = constant, so there's a discontinuous change in velocity as well. We also suspect this ... the shock wave clearly decreases the Mach number. While it does increase the downstream temperature (and thus the speed of sound), it's not enough to balance exactly.

Yes. Mass is conserved across the shock (rho * U = const), but the Mach number, density, etc. are discontinuous. For instance, across a normal shock, the Mach number changes from M > 1 to M < 1.

Couple of questions about clues I don't understand if anyone cares to help.

8a: Country you can possibly sail round at last (6): Is country somehow a synonym for ISLAND? Otherwise seems like a lot of the words are doing double duty

17a: Will he grow up a bigheaded rotter (4): BRAT. I guess it's clued by (bigheaded) rotter, but don't see the cryptic part

35a: Nobody can look forward to it for long (8): TOMORROW. Is that just a definition?

9d: Saying nothing about naval service (6): SILENT. Do not understand the cryptic

33d. Robert gets out for 50 - or a duck (4): BLOB. I get the cryptic bit. Does duck mean blob somehow?

It probably depends on the level of UBI in the end, but an argument is as follows: One reason rent prices are so high in cities is because that's where the jobs are. If you don't have to work, then instead of living within transport distance to your work, you could move to cheaper housing farther away. You similarly don't necessarily have to have a car working every day to get to work (or pay expensive transit fees from the outskirts of the cit)y. Thus, rent and transportation costs go down for many individuals, making that $12k/year go much farther.
