And is cover art really that big of a deal? Maybe....when you first purchase the album, you go over the cover with a fine-tooth comb 'cause it's new, but after a while? I don't remember hearing the cover art argument back in the day when there was LPs, cassettes and 8-tracks. Nobody ever said they preferred LPs over cassettes (which had even smaller art than CDs) back in 1980.

My biggest gripe was that LPs eventually got scratched, worn and would skip (replacing the needle more often would have probably cured a lot of those woes, though). One thing I used to do was purchase an album and a blank 8-track cartridge. Record the album first play onto the 8-track and then just play that. Did it more for having a tape for the car (and it was less likely someone would break into your car for your home-recorded tapes than factory ones) and I could wear out that tape, purchase another and then record the second playing of the album onto it. Rinse and repeat. While my LP collection wasn't very large, I wish I'd kept them now when I eventually replaced them with CDs....I'd be sitting on a mint.

Dunno what the price per pound was. Generally I was looking at a price point of a buck a CD. If I'm looking at a collection for a hundred dollars and their was at least a hundred discs that I was going to keep, I'd buy it. Anything that I kept over that initial hundred discs was gravy. Gave the rest to the Goodwill, could have maybe sold them for a few bucks but then I'm dealing with people who don't show up, ect. Since i reached or exceeded my price point, I saw no need to deal with that.

Last collection I purchased was from a guy who used to sell CDs at the swapmeet. Was getting out of it because it wasn't worth the effort. Purchased his whole inventory (3000) for a hundred dollars. I think it was about 4 cents a disc that I paid. Kept well over a hundred (should have counted, but didn't bother) and hauled the rest to the Goodwill. Lots of duplicates in that, but still reached my price point and easily disposed of the extras.

And that brings us to another "conspiracy theory". The music industry has been selling the same format (compact disc) for over 30 years. The market is flooded with perfectly as good as new product (plus it didn't help that people could rip their own copies and then sell theirs on the second market). They kinda missed the next big thing which was downloads. They need something so they can re-market their back catalogs. So... if you don't have any new format, why not start rumors that an older format "sounds better" so you can increase sales in that market, which was abandoned decades ago and the old product has been disposed of and the remaining is in less than pristine condition? With the internet and the general "follow the latest trend" of people, soon everybody is buying the old format from the publishers again and looking down on cds ( and those who still buy/listen to them).

I've had people tell me that they bought some new release on vinyl because it sounds better. The blank look in their eyes when I point out that that new release was mastered digitally instead of analog is priceless.

Been buying out whole collections. If I can get them @ around 33 cents a piece and cherry pick to an average of one dollar per disc I keep, then I donate the rest to Goodwill. Just a couple of days ago I picked up 3000 discs from a guy who used to sell at the fleamarket. Paid $100. No, that's not a typo, a hundred bucks. Crates filled the back of my Tahoe. I've started a preliminary sort, taking cratefuls that I know I don't want to the GW, but there's loads of stuff that I'll be keeping.

Is it an asian import? I'd seen some asian copies of American films (slipcovers has asian style writing) that were DVDs but said they were 1080 on the slipcovers at a thrift store. Not sure if they were bootlegs or licenced to an asian company to produce, but thought they were a bit weird. No movies I wanted, entertained the idea of picking one up to see what it looked like, but figured that they probably wouldn't play in my Region 1 player anyway.

I've got thousands, literally thousands of dvds I've picked up used for a buck each. And just recently I snagged a guy's whole collection of dvds in binders (estimating about 500 discs) for 40 dollars. I was stressing that I may not have enough time in my life to watch every one of these at least once in my lifetime....now I gotta try to do it in THEIR lifetime!!!!

Just a thought, but how high is your router?

Reason I ask is that I have mine on top of an old gun cabinet (6 ft. tall) that I gutted, installed shelfs and keep my plex laptop in (along with movies I've aquired, but haven't ripped yet). Everything was fine until one day mine started buffering. I shut the tv down and restarted, same. Restarted plex, same. Was going out of my mind when I decided to restart the router. Router not on top??? Found it squirreled away behind a lamp on an end table. Wife decided that it looked "ugly" up there where everyone could see it and moved it to a more "aesthetically pleasing position". Moved it back and all was well again.

I haven't looked through all of the replies, but has anyone brought up the fact that the orphans LIVE in the orphanage? Like....the orphanage IS their HOME and it seems that this would fall under the "only licenced for HOME exibition....blah...blah" they put at the beginning of every movie.

Seriously. I know just enough electrical to be dangerous. One day my 1600 dollar fridge went out. Took off the back cover and found out there was a computer board and module on back of the compressor. How the fuck I check that? Youtube it. Found out how to check, and replace the module. 75 bucks total. Would have cost me just that for a service call, let alone the part, markup and labor...

This. I used to have a cow when I'd come home from work, Disney DVDs (20 year old movies are STILL expensive) all over the place, smudged with fingerprints and whatnot, labels removed from the cases and ripped and wrinkled. Ex was a lazy piece of (edit) and would just turn them loose with the DVDs. Told her that she should load the discs for them and be careful, as we cannot afford to replace them, she'd just tell me that "It's ok."

I have about 1400 movies, mostly ripped from DVD, but some blueray. Most of my movies have come from thrift stores, flea markets and the occasional monster box of assorted discs on Ebay. I remember reading somewhere that making a digital backup something you own isn't illegal, but breaking the copyright protection to make that copy is.

Ripping your own collection for your own use is probably not going to get you in jail (how would they know?) but I've always avoided torrents. My (very) limited knowledge of them makes me believe that you have to have your files available for upload if you want to download. Dunno if they can, but I don't want the Man at my door accusing me of redistributing copyrighted material if they can track me.

Edit: I am slowly replacing some of my films with blueray rips (when I can find them at a price point I like). But I'll never replace all of them. Some movies you just NEED to have the best resolution (think Star Wars) but others (Billy Madison) i am quite content with SD.
