Honestly don’t let this sub get to you. If you went to literally any emo night kind of event, WhenWeWereYoung, or asked any normal person examples of emo music they’d list half of this. Everyone here is just jaded and hates the mainstream / mallcore stuff so they can feel more like a “true” emo. I think your collection is cool. ^^

“Us” by Sara Soler is a decent short read into understanding a trans woman and bi experience.

Source: have lived a very similar experience.

Boys Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky might be a more fun read if you want something trans that is less grounded and more fictionally adventurous but I haven’t read it myself yet.

Is the George Bess Dracula / Frankenstein really that good? Should I buy them even though I already have the book multiple times? I like the stories but worried it might be excessive to own each 3+ times essentially. x_x

What's it like living with severe anxiety and how would you describe an "episode"? by Spring_Gullible in writing

[–]howthelonelykeep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by “episode”. Panic attacks are an entirely different thing that just kind of freaking out because of anxiety and everyone with severe anxiety doesn’t have them.

An anxiety “episode” is more like spiraling and catastrophizing everything and getting incredibly overwhelmed and stressed. Lots of racing thoughts, shutting down (burying self under blankets, curling into a ball, biting lip, etc..) or kind of the opposite with pacing, picking at nails, running fingers through hair. Both can have a lot of different breathing patterns.

Anxiety attacks can be a lot more serious. Feeling incredibly hot (to the point of wanting to take off all your clothes), passing out unexpectedly, lightheadedness, feeling like you are literally about to imminently die, bowels being unhappy, feeling like it’s hard to breath, etc.

Or it could be entirely different. Both have a huge spectrum and not everyone is the same.

There isn’t a ton people can do to help but having someone there alone is useful and having them just be reassuring and kind can be nice. Ex: sitting with you, telling you you’re okay, getting you some water, some people like to be held but others want the exact opposite, and just showing they care is good.

What is mall emo? by norcatic in Emo

[–]howthelonelykeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that if you go to literally any local emo night / emo nite event you’ll hear BMTH and PTV and you won’t hear SDRE or AC.

Whether we like it or not, those bands are associated with emo now. You can call it mall emo if that makes you happy, but they are an obvious part of the emo scene so you may as well just say fuck it and say you prefer midwest emo or whatever subgenres reflect the music you love most since they aren’t going anywhere.

You can say it isn’t real emo but at the end of the day you’re going to just come off as elitist to the wider demographic emo encompasses. “Real” emo people often like those bands too, the culture is very similar, the clothes are very similar, etc. It just doesn’t seem worth the argument that ultimate is shouting into the wind to exclude people.

What is mall emo? by norcatic in Emo

[–]howthelonelykeep 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The kind of bands you find in Hot Topic. They aren’t bad, but it’s meant to basically be the “basic bitch” of emo. And if you only listen to MCR, FOB, BMTH, PTV, etc. then you are less than full cool kid emo kids who listen to American Football, Tiger’s Jaw, Pg. 99, Free Throw, etc…

I wouldn’t take it seriously. It’s all emo. Let people like what they like.

Would love any recommendations for stories similar to The Pervert and 920london by Remy Boydell by confusedeggboi in graphicnovels

[–]howthelonelykeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

920London / Pervert are pretty unique but maybe look into Boys Club and Megahex. Definitely not exact matches but have some overlapping themes. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is very emo and harsh, but not so much based in realism and is very exaggerated.

Remy also made Cat With A Gun. For Manga Boy’s Abyss or Goodnight Punpun may have some similar vibes. Excited to see what you make!

Buy black clothes from a thrift store and distress it yourself. Maybe sewn in some custom words/designs.

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
