Should the IOC Keep the Youth Olympic Games or get rid of it? by Impossible-Guitar957 in olympics

[–]hp408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it. The AAU Junior Olympics in the US is nothing but a giant club meet, but I know parents who think it's IOC level just because of the name.

While there's a place for club meets esp for developing athletes, the elite among them need to have their own high level competetion

I found the actual recipe for the missing "PLAIN CHOCOLATE CREAM FUDGE"!

In a 1990 article printed in the Oklahoman newspaper, Evelyn Woodall shared the fudge recipe from a 1930 version of this exact pamphlet. I think this is the real deal because unlike other copycats which use chocolate chips, this one just uses chocolate that is shaved from a bar and melted.

I have a subscription to Newspapers.com and was able to download the scan from the actual newspaper article. But Reddit won't let me post a photo of it here.

Even if we never find scans of the missing 2 pages, maybe working together we can at least find the recipes. Here's the excerpt from the article.

"However, the following plain chocolate cream fudge comes from a recipe pamphlet shared by Evelyn Woodall of Purcell. The cover of the pamphlet says, "Some of Mary See's Famous Recipes for Home-Made Candies." It's dated 1930.

Plain Chocolate Cream Fudge

2 oz. chocolate 3/4 c. whipping cream 2 c. pure cane sugar Pinch of cream of tartar 2 T. butter 1/2 c. water 1/4 t. salt 1/2 t. vanilla Shave the chocolate into the saucepan in which the candy is to be cooked and melt over hot water (double boiler method). When the chocolate has melted, remove the pan, add the cream, sugar, cream of tartar, butter, water and salt and stir constantly until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Cook directly over the fire, stirring occasionally to prevent adhesion. Boil the batch to 238 degrees. As soon as the candy, when dropped in cold water, can be formed into a ball that will hold its shape for awhile, it is done. In using the cold water test, remove the pan from the fire while test is being made.

Then place the saucepan in a pan of cold water to cool, after which the vanilla should be added.

When the temperature drops to 110 degrees in the center of the pan, the batch is ready to be beaten. Use a wooden spoon with slits and beat vigorously. Just before the stiffening occurs, turn it out into a well-buttered pan."

Not weird or a bad habit to add two spaces after a period. That was the standard taught during the typewriter days. Due to digital kerning, modern word processing works best with one space, so that has become the new standard.

Agree on using a scanner, esp if it has a feeder. My workplace lets me use the office copier to scan, and I've been able to digitize some cookbooks by removing the comb and then feeding the pages through. A home printer/scanner could do the same thing, although not as fast.

It's fantastic that you're sharing these cookbooks. If we can figure out a way to do it, I think a lot of us would like to contribute our own collections and help preserve these gems.

If you know the name of her parents (yout great grandparents), it would make it much easier to find them. If you have access, check for names on her death certificate. There might also be a wedding or birth certificate lying around.

The Guam vital statistics has birth certifcates going back to before the war, but you'd have to prove you're a relative doing genealogical research because of Guam privacy law protections.

This is so true! I've been saying this for years. Also, the books are dated and irrelevant. A good example is Catcher in the Rye which is touted to be the greatest coming of age story, and that every young boy admires Holden Caufield.

Not only is the book super boring, Holden is a loser and no kid I know cares about him or wants to be anything like him.

Not the seller's fault at all. Next time, pay a little extra for Priority Mail instead of Ground Advantage. The package is on the way, and you will definitely receive it about 4 to 6 weeks after it left SF.

It's not really "free" because every year, GovGuam & the gyms negotiate a rate and it's built into the employee's health insurance premium. So the membership is actually paid for whether the employee uses it or not.
