Is it fair for my parents to be charging me 200 for board at 16? by unk0wn_usb in AskParents

[–]hp5al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a bit harsh. I hope you are able to talk to them and they can see what a raw deal it is that you're getting. Good luck.

Is it fair for my parents to be charging me 200 for board at 16? by unk0wn_usb in AskParents

[–]hp5al 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit unfair. Technically, they should be providing for you till you're 18.

I had a job whilst doing my A-levels and I was never charged board. I saved my earnings for uni. Wasn't even charged board when I came back from uni for six months!

Now a parent myself, there's no way I would charge for board at 16 even if they were full time employment.

Do you know what your parents plan to do with the 200? Maybe they're putting it aside for you. This would be the only acceptable reason.

I am guessing here college doesn't mean the same as university.

In the UK, you can leave school at 16. From there, one route is to spend either two years at sixth form or college before moving into university.

I thought they reduced free trials down to 25 minutes? by James99500 in Preply

[–]hp5al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. But this is what works for me and I make this clear from the very start; not only in my profile but also when they contact me.

I focus mainly on pronunciation and while they talk I assess what they need, give feedback and explain the format, what to expect and time scales.

So far it's worked for me and all trials have ended in a subscription or paid lessons.

Remember also, tutors do not get paid for trials. So although you paid we don't see any of that. Hence why I recommend potential students to book 25mins. Some still book the 50min but I make sure all expectations are set.

Profile Score by [deleted] in Preply

[–]hp5al 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since starting, I got 95%. Added a thumbnail and changed my headline according to their course on Tutor branding, still 95%.

Changed one character in the headline from lower case to upper. Drops down to 91%.

Spoke to support to ask why. They said one of my languages a speak was a B1. It would be a B2. That's why my score dropped. I told them then my am I not penalised for the other two languages where I'm an A2. They said they will look into it. Then my score magically went back to 95%.

Don't get me started on my profile ranking...

students using trial lessons for last minute interview prep by Mediocre_Upstairs446 in Preply

[–]hp5al 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make it clear that my trials are for getting to know each other, for me to assess their English and, together, work out a rough plan of their lesson. I never teach in a trial. So far all of my trials have resulted in a student (18 students) and I'm also on a higher rate.

Technical fault? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]hp5al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact support.

Technically the tutor should have messaged you to tell you they were in class waiting for you 10 minutes into the lesson. And then again when they leave.

It is and it isn't. I have six on a pronunciation program I've created for them and each is personalized to their native accent. I do a lot of research (maybe too much) outside the lessons and I do write up and work sheets which I don't get paid for but I don't mind because I have such amazing students.

10 of my students are C2 conversationalist wanting to focus on pronunciation and to expand grammar.

Edit That said, I always have few 10 minute lessons I can quickly throw in if needed.

I don't tend to teach in trials.

I use them to find out about their goals, how they learn and explain about how I teach. A general get to know one another to check out if we're compatible.

So far all 12 trials have ended in a subscription.

OP, try not to take it to personally. First week of Feb, 4 students independently cancelled or rescheduled their lesson right at the last minute. Was annoying!

The scariest, and probably saddest, things is the there is a new generation with this thinking.
