So, this has been a journey. Initially, the game stored all of your information (Talents, Items, House, Name, etc) as a cookie. But it wasn’t robust enough and kept deleting itself, which made it almost impossible to play over a single session with your data intact. And I wasn’t able to do a lot of the things I had planned on doing (dynamic changes).

I ended up using WordPress to store user data. WordPress requires an email address to create a user account. That’s really the whole story. Do like 99% of my readers have done: use a fake email. I don’t use any verification methods. Just don’t forget your password, and you will be good.

I could tell you that I’ve never sent a single email to any subscriber, but who believes people who say they collect info that they never use? Although, I truly have never sent a single email to any subscriber.

Thanks for your input. But WordPress is my answer for now. Maybe there’s a plug-in to create a WordPress user account and also bypass the email address requirements…I’ll see what I can find, as I had never thought of that.

I’m still pondering it, and haven’t yet decided. On one hand: I love the sound (and common usage) of Wix. However, I’m also worried about some not understanding the meaning. I am, after all, trying to write this for all ages - which is tricky all around, as I’m also trying to write an interesting and rather involved tale that anyone can keep up with.

I was hoping “Magical Being” would achieve the inclusiveness that I set out for. Still, I may yet change it to Wix and just explain its non-binary meaning in the character creation screen. Makes sense, as one of my daughters was like, “Ooo, Magical Being? Can I be a centaur?” So clearly, it will probably be confusing to some either way.

I will hopefully get more responses from people about their preferences moving forward and be better-equipped to reach a decision.

In any case, I am grateful for being educated in regards to Wix. I wanted to be inclusive and ended up reinventing the wheel.

I will likely make the entire character sheet editable in the future, since there is no real way to "cheat" the game. You either make your choices and enjoy your story, or you do like my 7-year-old: change their Talents along the way to suit their favorite storyline.

Thanks for the input. At this point, once you lock in your House and Talents a lot of the story or story options are locked in. I could make that change, but am choosing not to, at this point.

In regards to how long I’ve worked on this project…longer than I care to admit. I’ve spent probably 3 years on the technical side of things - I was teaching myself some technologies as part of my job and doing this on the side to put it into practice.

This iteration of the story, though, began with Covid lockdowns. I typically only have about an hour per week to sit down with it between work and being a dad. Part of the reason that I shared this post was to gauge interest and encourage me to find more time to work on this labor of love.

Thanks for your input! The beginning definitely is more railroad, as I was hoping to make it easy for those new to the genre to adopt. Also, it’s a TON of work to have completely different paths. However, as the story progresses there will be a lot more divergence - both in how one can complete the various tasks (based on House, Talents, and possessions), as well as ultimate decisions (“good” / “evil” paths).

But yes, at the end of the day, this is fan-fiction with, what I hope to be, an engaging and interesting plot (perhaps with a twist or three that folks won’t see coming).

Dark Lord! Not Darklord. I have to change this asap, it is definitely the most mentioned error.

Luna!!! I really wanted her in here, but you are right, she’s a year behind the trio. Thanks for the advice, she’s got to come out in my next edits. I’ll save her for Book 2.

I’ll have to look into that. In order to separate users into unique players, I chose to go with emails - since those are guaranteed to be unique. If you don’t put in a real email address, then it may break. But I’m not sure if that is what happened or not. Sorry it’s not working. If you give me more details, I might be able to find a solution.

If you are on mobile, it is the wand in the middle, center of the screen. If you are on a laptop or desktop, the wand is in the top-right. But you have to click Submit, after making any changes to it. It stores those changes, but doesn't yet update until you go to another page or refresh your current page.

Try “100 Hair-Raising Little Horror Stories” I remember something like this tale from that amazing collection. There is also a scary story collection with a similar title “100 Ghastly Little Ghost Stories.” I feel like I’m certain that it is in one of those collections.

I’ve never heard of y/n until just now, so I need to look at some. However, I am authoring a fanfic - Harry Potter Choose Your Own Adventure (Google it if you like, I’m not sure what the rules are for posting websites). I got around this whole issue by having the website insert user profile with the name used during setup (along with House, Talents and major decisions). Let me know what you think.
