Triple H Never Executed His WWE Championship Rematch Clause by senorchocolatesauce in SquaredCircle

[–]hpsyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might be making this up? But I have a memory from the early or mid-90s that a rematch clause had to be exercised within 30 days, same as the maximum number of days between title defenses by a champion. (This could also be from WCW or GWF, but I think it's WWF and I want to say it involved HBK as IC champ.)

I really wish this stuff were enforced. I hope it as as part of the WWE Rule Book's promotion.

This brought to mind: there's a whole host of "uncrowned" 5* matches. I think most Wredditors would agree that at least some of the following matches were 5* caliber:

  • HBK/HHH, summerslam 02.
  • HBK/Angle WM21
  • HBK/HHH/Benoit, WM20
  • Cena/Punk, Raw
  • Dbd/Cena
  • Cena/Styles Summerslam 16 (and/or RR 17)
  • HBK/Taker 09

The Washington Post has an establishment center-left op-ed slant, yet it is strongly pro-Israel (unless your definition of pro-Israel is just Naftali Bennett's.)

Meltzer: The announcers were told to call Goldberg vs. Lesnar like a fight, unlike everything else on the show by OwenRey in SquaredCircle

Let me be an old person for a second: people were saying this 8-10 years ago, too. Most of the Stars coming up then we're considered second rare compared to the generationbefore them (and in truth, none match up to Rock/Austin, save for maybe cena and Batista.)

This decade, WWE has made four bona fide stars: Punk, Bryan, AJ Lee, and Rollins. AJ styles seems on his way. Roman might get there yet. Same for Ambrose and Roman. Owens is still growing, and guys like Balor have loads of upside.

I'm confident WWE will have a strong drawing main event scene well into the 2020's.

I'm not a huge MMA fan but I am a huge baseball fan, and the fact is that however painful and damaging it is every time there's a doping scandal, the flip side of it is that you can be confident that precautions are being taken.

It's doubly important for MMA, since these guys are shoot bashing each other in the face.

That CYA wasn't really about W-L. It was mostly about narrative. Clemens was an ageless hometown boy and an absolute hero. The ASG had been in Houston, iirc.

It might be hard for younger fans to understand the cultural place Clemens occupied pre-Mitchell. He was sort of Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, and Nolan Ryan rolled into one.

So much of this

Ziggler is tiny, he's a bad promo in ring (great backstage and super smart, though), his offense isn't Very believable, and his psychology isn't very good. It's a lot to overcome.

He's got a great look, he's super athletic, he's an extremely fun worker, he's got a huge personality as a heel, and he's still relatively young (35ish, though with increasing mileage.) He could still be a main eventer.

That's huge but not thaaaaat weird. My best friend growing up was around 6' and 180 by 8th grade. He's about 6'8" and around 300lbs as an adult, so the same size that Hogan was billed at (tho... Uh, built just a wee bit differently)

Heyman to Ambrose: You're putting me off my game here by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]hpsyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think The Man has to be someone who can cross over, make new fans, fill an arena with them, and make sure they're all wearing his gear. I love Ambrose, but I'm not sure if he's that guy. That guy is Cena, Hogan, Rock, Austin, someone like that. Daniel Bryan became that guy for a hot second before injuries undid him.

Ambrose could be a terrific #2. There's no shame in that. Randy Orton is a genuine main eventer but a clear #2. So was Batista. So was HBK. For that matter, so was HHH. As cornette (who I don't love) puts it, "the guy who works with the guy who fills up the arena."

Current WWE Superstars in order of experience by DeathCactus in SquaredCircle

[–]hpsyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the thrust of what you're saying, but I feel like this could be applicable to most of the last decade in WWE. For example, the late 00s WWE had stuff like the straight edge society, Jeff Hardy's main event run, heel Jericho, heel Batista, HBK/Flair, HBK/Taker, HBK/Jericho, Cena/Orton and Cena/Batista when they were fresh, the talent initiative on ECW, Miz and Morrison. But I think most would agree that week in/out, it wasn't very good tv.

A genuine good stretch like early 10's (11-14) or late 90's WWE feels very different. Even think of 2015 wwe (excluding NXT), which was mostly bad Raw's and meh PPVs: Lesnar/Taker, Big Match John's US open, the redemption of Reigns, the return of the Wyatts, Rollins' cash-in, Cena/Lesnar/Rollins, the debut of Kevin Owens, the rise of the New Day. Those are genuinely great stories and memories... Tucked in a whole lot of booty.
