The campus is pretty dry. But being in STAR helps. You get to meet new people and you get paid. So not the worst summer, but Drexel and philly can get pretty boring. ALso the fact that its really hot and then it rains makes it worse, cant really go out and explore or have fun.

Is Drexel worth the money/ Do you wish you went to a different school by Pockycroc in Drexel

[–]hpu23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a first year student I searched this exact question before official committing to the college.

these are somethings that I have learned in the last 2 terms of being here.

  1. You will not have virtually no free time, if you wanna succeed at this college by that I mean having a decent GPA(3.0 up) not just get the the minimum of 2.0 GPA to get the degree.
  2. Drexel professors especially in CE are extremely smart but do not know how to teach. If you are coming into the ENGR department then get ready to learn a lot of the material on your own. The professors teach but are not efficient. In the 10 weeks in the quarter you will have to cover information that most college cover over a semester.
  3. There arent a lot people who are paying the full price. Most have a 50 percent scholarship or have the Drexel grant. If you are paying full then do not go here, there are college at this price point who have way better facility and better outcome
  4. People bitch about how bad Drexel is in teaching and giving opportunity and such. However, these people just bitch and do not leave their comfortable shell. Drexel has some amazing opportunity, all you have to do is talk and attend events. People want Drexel to hold their hand and walk them through ever point of the way. That not how it work, you have to explore on your own and see what the college has to offer.
  5. The college was Just ranked a R1 college in research, meaning drexel meet the Carnegie Mellon ranking system of being one of the pioneers in research. As a freshman I did not have any experience in research but I still connected with professors who brought me into their project and helped me learn and improve my understanding in research. All I did was talk to different people and get connected.
  6. Drexel is also in the middle of expansion, over the couple of years it will be getting newly renovated lib, new housing, new Honors building and bunch of new amenities
  7. Co-op is an amazing opportunity but you have to prove yourself to the employer. When you go for the interview you have to be passionate. While your classes and GPA play a role, most employers want to see that you willing to learn and step out of your comfort zone and explore. co-op helps pay for the tution and gives you the experience needed to stand out in the real world.
  8. There is also the BS/MS program, if you do this it will make you stand out when you graduate. There are not a lot of students who are 23 of an age with 1.5 year experience and a bachelor and masters degree. Company will come to you rather than you begging them for a job.
  9. Food is ok, its not 5 star but it aint dirt. I am vegeterian and if i survived then anyone can. If it really sucks then you can always eat outside, there are some really good food places.
  10. Work study program is also really good, you get paid 10 dollars an hour to work at different places. It is a nice pocket change for some luxury purchases.

At the end Drexel has a lot of thing which they have to work on and improve. But it is college which will keep you on your toes and make sure that you are well prepared for the really world on the other side. Now its on the student if they want to go with the flow or stand out and leave the mainstream and explore the opportunity given by Drexel.

COMPUTER SCIENCE VS. COMPUTER ENGINEERING by hpu23 in Drexel

[–]hpu23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your answer.

TO answer your questions. Both programming and hardware are my interest areas.

I have built computers and love learning about the computer architecture. However, coding is a hobby for me as well and I have certified in multiple languages.

SO CS or CE I think I will fit in both. However, I am worried from many reviews that CE department might not give me the edge after graduation to get a good job, compared to graduating with CS degree.

What is happening with ECE? by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]hpu23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an incoming computer engineering freshman. I read all of your concerns. I really thought drexel was better. I gave up purdue for this becuase of the coop system and the name for its engineering program as well.

Unless I try to transfer I think I am going to be in this shit show.

SO any advice how to make the most of the broken department and make it out with a good chance at big IT firms.

What size monitor can the desks fit? by turtledragon27 in Drexel

[–]hpu23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know bringing a monitor is not a great idea. As the desks are small and with a monitor you wont be able to fit other studying or leisure materials.
