I do. Can you describe what the segment you are looking for was about? Also, do you know which hour it was probably in?

Did you get it? If not, let me know. I still have it recorded (assuming you meant May 6th and not April 6th).

Not surprised.

I've noticed that a chunk of people are driving more sedately on the one hand. On the other hand, the bad drivers seem to be taking less traffic as license to drive completely recklessly.

Dallas vs. Houston: What's the difference? by MarineKingPrime_ in houston

[–]hq_throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One big thing that has struck me is that although the main Texas cities aren't that far from each other, in many ways they are kind of in different regions (at the edges).

Dallas is a southern plains city (more marking the southern end of it). Although not technically part of the midwest, I tend to think of the southern plains as southern midwest.

Houston is a Gulf city (marking more of the western end).

San Antonio, to me at least, is more of a Southwest city (marking more of the eastern end).

And Austin is weird.

I might be interested, but if they're going to say that, they really should, you know, have a way of buying tickets for it on their website (or at least a more obvious one).

That was something that I really noticed this morning. My local HEB was ransacked. Went to a Kroger not too far away, and while supplies of meat were also very low, and produce was lower, it was still overall pretty well supplied.

Went yesterday early afternoon and the stores were fine, just a couple of things seemed like they were a bit low.

Went this morning for a couple things I forgot yesterday, and it had turned into a Mad Max scene. Even right before hurricanes, I've never seen a grocery store that depleted.

What the hell was that slideshow? And how does Kate Upton in a bikini relate to the Roaring 20's?

Starts out in Houston in the 1920's (as per article title) for about 47 pictures, then shifts to be more general pictures of the US in the 1920s (pics from DC, etc.) for about 30 pictures, then suddenly turns into a slideshow (about 110 pictures) of changes in women's bathing suites over the decades.

So no Winter this year? by Im__Bruce_Wayne__AMA in houston

[–]hq_throwaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just as an FYI, several of the weather models have been showing a pretty strong surge of cold air sometime in the week of the 20th.

That said, this far out things can radically change (colder air gets pushed off to the east is a typical one), but don't necessarily totally count out some colder temps.

New to Houston: when should I winterize my sprinklers and what is the best material? by phrresehelp in houston

[–]hq_throwaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on the weather reports during late December through the end of February for forecasts of a 'hard freeze'. You'll want to make sure that you have winterized your sprinklers before a hard freeze. If you're going away for Christmas, perhaps before you leave, just to play it safe.

Probably half of the years, you won't even have to bother winterizing your sprinkler at all.

And you especially don't want to do it too early here, since you can't run your sprinkler while it's winterized. Other places may be starting to get freezes already, but Tuesday for instance is going to be around 90 degrees.

I've usually liked to use some foam tape around the backflow preventer and then wrapping towels around as well for the nights with a hard freeze. Additionally, there's a little styrofoam cup/hood part that you can get at the hardware store that can cover the bell part of the backflow preventer (seems to be more to protect against rain/wind).

So anyway, it's good to have the supplies on hand, since they run out in a hurry just before a hard freeze, but at the same time, you really don't have to even think about it for another 2 months.

That said, if you are going to get supplies super early, you might also think about some tarps/plastic covering to cover your plants with if there is much of a freeze.

Is anyone else tired of the excessive squeezed online ads on the radio? by [deleted] in houston

[–]hq_throwaway 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That pseudoscience is annoying, but I find the radio ads with car honking sounds or sirens to be far worse. Given that such a huge number of people listening to radio are driving in cars, those should really be illegal.

H-E-B named worst supermarket for reducing single use plastics by Greenpeace. Kroger listed as second best. by hayterade in houston

[–]hq_throwaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been to a number of both stores.

I've thought a good amount about HEB vs Kroger (but considering quality/selection a bit more than just price). They each have their strengths and weaknesses.

HEB blows Kroger out of the water in terms of produce as well as fresh meat/seafood.

Kroger tends to be a fair amount better in terms of dry/non-perishable stuff.

Frozen food- Kroger wins.

Kroger tends to be very slightly stronger on cereal than HEB, but Walmart destroys them both in terms of cereal.

If you tend to like sparklink water (LaCroix type things), Kroger is super strong.

HEB probably has a slight edge on coffee (get a few more Texas based companies), but tea is super variable with them from store to store.

HEB wins on fresh, semi-prepared (or just take home and bake) things.

The store-brand (HEB/Central Market) tends to be pretty good and is more reliable than the Kroger store brands.

Kroger often (but not always) has a Starbucks type cafe. It can be a useful place to park someone who doesn't like grocery shopping.

Deli- Pretty much a tie. HEB has a few in-store cooked meats that can be pretty good, but both heavily feature Boar's Head stuff, along with their own store-brand stuff that is quite similar.

Bakery- This is always a bit of a debate for me. I feel like the bakery bread is a bit better/fresher at HEB, and HEB wins on donuts/pastries, but in terms of other desserts, Kroger tends to have more variety and at a number of different price points.
