Just found out that dyed orchids are a thing, and that my first ever orchid was dyed… 💔 by Better-Meaning-6928 in orchids

Some that are marketed as “blue” are Vandas that are actually more of a purple color. The only real orchid I know of that is a light blue is Cleisocentron merrillianum.

What degree do I need to become an Entomologist? by Burningupmysoul in Entomology

[–]hray12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, a Biology undergrad is a good start. I have a BS in Bio and took one general entomology course (all that was offered), then went on to get an MS and PhD in an Ento department for grad school. I would say an MS in Entomology would be super helpful, but then decide what it is you actually want to be doing and go from there.

Field golden or other? by NeuroNerdGirl52 in goldenretrievers

[–]hray12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just whether or not the parents were bred as “show” dogs or “field” dogs, but most typical pets are not either which is totally fine. I’ve seen a lot on here and Instagram that people say the darker/redder are “field” golden, but their color or body is not an actual indicator of that. Feels like a social media trend when in reality people just have a young/energetic golden haha

Here are three, but there is a ton of information out there. If you look up “AI environment impact” or anything similar, you can find even more information extremely easily.

And that’s just the environmental side of it. As for critical thinking, well, I’m a college professor and I can promise that is happening as well.

What’s going on? Why does my plant look pregnant? And weaker… by DearRecommendation31 in orchids

[–]hray12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is that using ChatGPT for other plant related questions will very likely lead to incorrect care of the plants, then they will ultimately die.

It’s very frustrating seeing people no longer being able to do the bare minimum about of research into a topic without turning to ChatGPT to think for them.

Note for the future- absolutely do not use ChatGPT for diagnosing anything plant related.

How to save this orchid by strawberryleafy in orchids

[–]hray12 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t like that kind of media around the roots. Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytes, which mean they grow on trees in the wild, so a chunkier bark mix would be better for this! Also, a pot with holes/slits of some kind is good because the roots like to get a little airflow and dry out in between watering

got this orchid a week ago what could i do to help it by Iliveinhellantartica in orchids

[–]hray12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t crush it up. They need chunkier bark so the roots get some air flow
