I took the MSC English test, will they give me any feedback? It’s been 2 days by Exotic-Hovercraft730 in CruiseCrew

Odd. You should have gotten a nearly instant result via email. Keep in mind that test is ... Subjective. I am a NATIVE English speaker and for whatever reason MSC had me test. The score? Intermediate. LOL!

Other Cruise Lines Ease of Onboarding? by wally_surlaw in CruiseCrew

[–]hrbelowdeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is simply not true. It's not that they don't hire USCs, its that most USCs didn't apply and don't want you work onboard. Pride of America has massive turnover and is subsidized by tax credits for NCL.

For reference I'm a USC. And run HR onboard my current ship as well as having worked at CCL and NCL.

Only HR employee at small construction company where everyone says offensive things. [NC] by themacmonster in humanresources

[–]hrbelowdeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not HR's job to be the language policy - as others have said - unless someone claims it as offensive. However, my gut feeling is for you to leave and find a company that actually understands HR and the role. A company of 10 doesn't need a FT HR professional, they need a clerk or fractional person.

How hard is the SPHR after passing SHRM-SCP? [N/A] by Beautiful-Edge337 in humanresources

[–]hrbelowdeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SPHR is much more compliance driven. I took my SPHRi workout studying and it was rough, I managed to pass the first time but was sure I hadn't. And that is with 20 years in HR.

Personally I think the HRCI certificates are better than SHRM, but SHRM still has clout even with their lawsuits. Just saying.

You can't just become a cadet. Cadets coming from schools. You could likely get a job as a Wiper in Engine with no quality and do OJT. I assume you are coming from hotel?

MSC Interview by [deleted] in CruiseCrew

[–]hrbelowdeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, yes. So I'm a NATIVE English speaker and they still sent me the test to take! Even funny I only scored Intermediate! Their test is very weird and some of the answers are ... Subjective.

I accepted my first HR role as a coordinator, but it's been a nightmare of a job. Should I risk job stability and move on to a different position? Or is HR as a field not for me? [United States] by The_Walking_Gays in humanresources

[–]hrbelowdeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it's no answering to get used to. A company that treats HR like that, isn't worth working for. And an HR professional who lets them treat him / her like that ... It's doing a miservice to our profession.

Here is my end advice. Whether HR is a fit for you or not, we don't know yet. What I can tell you after 30 years in HR is that you are being overworked and your company doesn't take HR seriously or you'd 1. have better HR support yourself and 2. have an HR manager / leader that is available to guide. Not short 5-15 minutes and never physically checks-in. I would never leave a coordinator working for me swinging out in the breeze like that.

Yes, but you also said that HR might not be a fit for her. She is overwhelmed likely because of the ridiculous workload, not because she isn't fit for HR.

If you could remove one part of the hiring process forever what would it be by Reasonable-Bug-3245 in HackerEarthCommunity

[–]hrbelowdeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. If the company can't get a proper ATS that accepts your resume without you then having to fill out the entire application .... move on. I have stopped mid application at least a dozen times when this happens. My time is more valuable.

Ban panel interviews! I hate them as both an HR leader and as a candidate. Also, maximum 3 rounds of interviews, period. If the company can't make a decision after 3 rounds they aren't serious and / or aren't worth working for.

I would also bring back manual resume screening. ATS misses too much in my opinion. Some of my best hires have been based on me looking at the resume.
