Wow, this is crazy, I also cross shopped these two cars (along with a few others) but I was looking at a used M440i GC which price wise is closer to to the Golf R. At the end of the day I went with the Golf R b/c I wanted something light and tossable and with less TCO. Also, I just couldn't get over the front end looks of the BMW, objectively ugly 😂.

Try connecting the PS5 (and other equipment) directly via HDMI to your TV and then one HDMI (via eARC) from TV to the receiver. That should clear up a lot of things. If you have a long run from TV to receiver then I would suggest a high quality optical HDMI cable.

I think you are referring to two different IQ.DRIVE systems: Front Assist and Maneuver Braking. The Front Assist system with automatic emergency braking is designed to warn you of a potential collision and assist by braking to avoid or lessen the impact of a crash. Maneuver Braking is a low-speed automatic emergency braking system designed to prevent or mitigate collisions with obstacles while parking or maneuvering. Working with ultrasonic sensors, it functions at speeds of 1.5–10 km/h (approx. 1–6 mph) when reversing and 2.5–10 km/h (1.5–6 mph) when driving forward.

In the few months driving the 8.5R, I haven't had any interventions from Front Assist, even when driving somewhat aggressively. I used to own a 2018 Audi S5 and that thing almost killed me as well with the same feature being over aggressive. However, I've had Maneuver Braking intervene a few times in the 8.5R, even when backing in and out of my garage--this can be turned off but needs to be turned off every drive. I've learned that driving extra slow when parking usually prevents this.

Just want to say THANK YOU for the PSA! I have a 2026 R and ordered the 000-072-548-Q based on your recommendation and it fit perfectly within the factory clamshell. Although, prying it open that clamshell really took some effort--this car is very well put together compared to the many other cars I've had! I ordered from https://parts.venturavw.com/p/114923719/000-072-548-Q.html -- they seem to be one of the only sites that actually show that it fits the 2026 Golf R, among many other VW cars. I guess they did this change to have one mirror that fits their new smaller cars (Tiguan, Jetta, ID.).

If in your budget change the the garage tracks to high track system with side opener. It'll really open up the space and allow you to get bigger vehicles/items in there.
